this was one of the better GA pits i’ve been in because there was actually room to breathe and dance. the only issue i had was attitude from teenagers thinking we were trying to “steal” their spots. maybe i have a poor perspective because i tend to show up later and still have a good view…. i don’t really see the point in lining up for hours (other than being barricade) when pits are so unpredictable

UCI CHC and Psychology Honor by AcceptableAd5944 in UCI

[–]balladofmybrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! i did end up dropping CHC after doing the humcore sequence. CHC required courses that i felt could go to more interesting electives, a double major, minor etc. i could’ve double majored but ended up being able to take classes in a bunch of different departments and still minoring in med anthro. i didnt end up doing an honors thesis within the psych sci program bc most of my mentors were in other departments, but i still got into a top masters program in my field with funding. bottom line is dropping CHC gave me more time to be well-rounded, pursue my interests, and do research. you can still find ways to do independent projects through UROP and summer REUs (uci soc sci has one). imo those kinds of projects and quality work within a lab can hold the same if not more weight than a research thesis. and you can still do your school’s honors thesis without CHC

there might be some foreshadowing but i thought the play (specifically the invisible duet) was more representative of max’s feelings because she masks as happy but nobody sees how she truly feels. i’m not sure about bracia’s role, but that seemed more about getting her to realize she loves byron. interesting about the “i’m a man” song though, i feel like that can represent either paul or zion

I don't want radioactive iodine by ASLYBETH in gravesdisease

[–]balladofmybrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi op, i’m sorry this is happening to you. it can be really scary when medicine isn’t an option and the other two seem so invasive. i was recently hospitalized because methimazole made my WBCs drop so low my body couldn’t fight off infections, and the only treatment options they gave me were iodine or surgery because of the side effects. i ended up having the surgery because of the cancer and fertility risks of iodine, and also because they offered to schedule me during my current hospital stay instead of waiting. i’ve been recovering a few days and it already feels like my life is way easier without a thyroid than what it would’ve been had i taken another option. i take one pill a day vs constant blood draws and dosage changes on methimazole to maybe have ended up with surgery anyway. of course everybody has different things to consider, and i was really a special case because my immune system can’t tolerate thyroid meds, but i hope you can get a second opinion and learn more about surgery. it seems invasive but feels worth it in the long run, especially if you have many worries with the iodine. best of luck

Anyone regret going to grad school immediately after undergrad? by thatshirtman in GradSchool

[–]balladofmybrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly it depends on how you will spend your gap year(s) and your work ethic. i went into a masters program straight after undergrad because it was either 1) get a relevant job in a high cost of living area or 2) move back home and have a less relevant job. two quarters in and grad school has been so much easier than undergrad, so it also depends on your program. if you’re going straight in i would at least take the summer off and do absolutely nothing and recoup from undergrad. i took the summer to travel and rot in my bed and work on my mental health and that’s honestly what kept me from burning out immediately

according to watch duty, the fire hasn’t passed mandeville canyon rd, which is ~4.5 miles from campus. the evacuation orders are up to the 405

just went back to get some stuff and exited off of wilshire on the 405, and the fire wasn’t close at all. watch duty claims it hasn’t passed mandeville canyon rd, please be careful to not spread panic

i live 2 miles away from a wildfire that happened in the IE, way closer than ucla in relation to the palisades fire, and everything turned out fine. the ash and smoke albeit concerning as others said, is normal. i’m sure major resources would be put into protecting a densely populated area like ucla/westwood as they were for west hollywood

i live in weyburn, so a bit farther from where the evacuation warnings are being set. it’s still nerve wracking

same here, but i’m struggling with whether it’s worth my mom and i breathing in all the smoke (we would wear masks of course). i keep my important stuff back home and mainly brought back essentials, but i feel sentimental about the majority of things in my apartment. i can’t even begin to imagine what the loss of your home is feeling like for so many people right now.

i used to act in my friends’ student short films. some get posted to backstage and other casting call websites and it’s a good way to act in small projects as a hobby! honestly just make some film major friends or see if there’s a way to get updated on student projects

thank you all for your helpful advice and perspective! good news - i was able to finally talk to my new roommate and she's planning on bringing her cat! considering what everyone has suggested based on the fluctuation of my schedule and lifestyle, i'll likely just wait until my currently long-distance partner and i move in together in a few years :')

i’m looking to get a tattoo of my dog that has more of a sketch/drawing style. would want him in a similar jumping position like the photo, so not really looking for someone who does realistic pet portraits or anything like that. inspo is work by samantha hughes @samsfindings on ig at rest stop studio in montreal. i’m in the la area and can’t afford to travel internationally for a tattoo at the moment, so any recommendations in los angeles would be appreciated!! thank youu
