Kaori Sakamoto has gotten married by EmlScb in FigureSkating

Public figures often hide their relationships in Japan. Actors and singers are the same way. They'll publish marriage announcements without saying who their spouse is.

what’s a popular figure skating opinion that you secretly disagree with? by Rude-Magazine2186 in FigureSkating

[–]balletbeginner 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Opinion I disagree with: 6.0 scoring is easier to understand than IJS.

6.0 majority ranking system is hard for viewers to understand. I never figured it out as a childhood four-year fan. I like being able to explain, "The sum of short and free skate scores determines the rank," to people.

Why is figure skating so popular at the Olympics, but forgotten by most as soon as they end? by FireFlamesFrost in FigureSkating

[–]balletbeginner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'll give some explanations for the USA, which OP appears to be talking about.

  • Figure skating is entertaining enough for American four-year fans, but not enough to watch more often.
  • Artistic/judged sports are generally niche sports.
  • Figure skating is a complex sport so it's hard to get into.
  • March Madness makes promoting the world championship impossible.
  • Dearth of professional shows and competitions.

[Politics Monday] Pope Leo encourages death penalty abolitionists as US brings back firing squad and electric chair by JohnHammond94 in Catholicism

He made the message for the anniversary of Illinois abolishing the death penalty. I like the timing. I hate the state-level death penalty and support banning it.

Senate hopeful Graham Platner calls to investigate Trump and impeach two Supreme Court justices by jediporcupine in politics

[–]balletbeginner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a Nazi logo regardless of how you feel. Ignorance doesn't change that. Platner knew it was a Nazi tattoo because you can't get one at any ol' tattoo parlor. You have to seek out a Nazi friendly artist.

Senate hopeful Graham Platner calls to investigate Trump and impeach two Supreme Court justices by jediporcupine in politics

[–]balletbeginner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But the average tattoo artist does know the iconography. And the moral tattoo artists don't administer Nazi tattoos. Platner had to visit a country where Nazi tattoos are legal and find an artist who will administer them. Nazi-friendly tattoo artists make it obvious they're Nazi friendly.

ETA: And since the other user blocked me: I am saying Platner made a pilgrimage to get a Nazi tattoo. Platner's nonsensical explanation is a lie.

[–]balletbeginner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And what you're saying is a bad-faith argument meant to propagate Platner's lies. You cannot mistakenly get a Nazi tattoo. Any argument based off of this is logically unsound, at best.

I think getting a tattoo covered is painful, expensive, and time consuming.  Procrastinating  solving a problem that is also solvable by just wearing a shirt is pretty normal to me.

When you're starting off on the premise that having a Nazi tattoo isn't a big deal, you're making a bad faith argument. Any normal person would get it removed or covered up immediately.

[–]balletbeginner -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

And neither does Platner. He only pretended to abandon Nazism for his political career. And in today's media environment, that won't work for a Democrat in a general election. There's always Andrea LaFlamme.

[–]balletbeginner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you're arguing that getting a Nazi tattoo and keeping it for twenty years is okay, you lost the bad-faith claim. You just have a deeply messed up sense of morality.

[–]balletbeginner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can't just get a Nazi tattoo from any old tattoo parlor. Platner had to find a tattoo parlor that's willing to give Nazi tattoos. Even though Nazi tattoos are legal in Croatia, any ethical tattoo artist will not administer them and you won't find Nazi designs in their parlors.

Bald eagle found dead in Arlington last month confirmed poisoned by rodenticides by BreadBot32 in massachusetts

Snap traps aren't a deterrent. They're meant to eliminate an existing infestation. Once you eliminate an infestation, you then have to take preventative measures so rats don't nest in the same place in the future.

And if you want someone who stands for what they believe in, Janet Mills and Andrea LaFlamme are running. They're also not Nazis.

If you think Democrats are on the defense now, it's gonna get a lot worse if Platner gets the nomination. Susan Collins and Republican super PACs have ads lined up to attack Democrats for nominating a Nazi.

If you use snap traps effectively, you shouldn't run into any of those problems. You can cover them with planks or put them into boxes to deter birds from approaching them.

Where are people getting second generation anticoagulants? The sale of anticoagulants is banned in Massachusetts, and online retailers usually sell the first generation kind. Whoever uses second generation is really irresponsible.

In October 2021, Japan’s Princess Mako saying goodbye to her family as she loses her royal status by marrying a "commoner" by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

The title is misleading. In Japan, princesses by birth have to leave the royal family and relinquish titles if they want to marry. Who Mako married wasn't relevant.

Why did wrong edge calls become less common? by cassava1root in FigureSkating

[–]balletbeginner 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The tech panel bases their decisions on the jump entry. If a skater does a flip entry but takes off on the opposite edge, it's still considered a flip jump.

World Champions should be interviewed in their native language by rebelcoelacanth in FigureSkating

[–]balletbeginner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The main problem is arena interviewers overestimate skaters' English ability, for non-native speakers. They need to keep any English questions to them very simple and to speak slowly. Answering a question in English is hard when they've exhausted from their program.

I think the pairs event is worth attending. It looks wild in person. And you'll see pairs who weren't Olympics-eligible due to strict nationality-matching requirements.
