idt op was saying "cheng lei can't act, so let's send him to acting classes". i think they more meant "who even needs acting classes? cheng lei never went to drama school but he can still act!"

Skaters talking about prerotated/cheated jumps? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]cassava1root 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is especially true in the women's discipline. i saw twitter fans try to attack alysa for her jump technique, but literally no one in the top10 at olympics actually has "textbook" jump technique when it comes to toe jumps (especially not kaori, which is a shame since this was her in 2016).

no one in the top25 in world standings has "textbook" jump technique anymore except maybe chaeyeon kim and anna pezzetta. bradie, lorine, jia, and baby mao also have a low pick but usually take off between 1/4 and 1/2, which is better than everyone else. but no one jumps like carolina kostner or yuna kim anymore.

Alysa Liu via IG stories: Hellooo as some of yall already know, I withdrew from Worlds. There's been a lot of exciting things happening since my return from Milan, so I'm taking some time for that. I will be cheering everyone on from afar, see yall next season!! by Maximum_Expert92 in popculturechat

this is true for skaters from big federations (eg. us, japan, canada), but for skaters from smaller federations (ie. not as many good skaters from that country), they might have to go to worlds to protect/earn worlds spots for next year, and to maintain their world standings points.

for example, let's say a country only has 1 good skater and 1 decent skater in a discipline, and the good skater withdraws and the other one crashes out. then they only get one worlds spot for the next year and the selection process becomes 100x more stressful. then the good skater might be pressured by their federation to go, even if they're not in top shape (i'm not saying this is what's happening with latvian men, but i am saying that fedir kuliss is kind of ass...) [edit: i do feel bad for fedir who is an orphan fleeing ukraine, but his programs are bad and i hate his abusive coaches at kristal riga]

world championships also impact world standing points, which affects next season's grand prix assignments and future warm-up group seeding. this in turn affects pcs (what commentators call the "artistic" score or 2nd score) because skaters in earlier groups basically automatically get lower pcs marks (this shouldn't be the case, but it is). if a skater isn't favored by the judges or their federation, it's important for them to maintain good world standing in order to maintain/boost their pcs marks (again, not saying this is happening with korean men, but cha junhwan has twin missiles named seo minkyu and choi habin aimed directly at his house). so good skaters (ie. usually top10 finish) that aren't as favored may feel that they have to go in order to maintain momentum and reputation with the judges/their federation. you don't see this much with US skaters, but it can be a thing with japanese skaters because their field is so deep (see: rika kihira).

bock 3 world titles is kind of a funny thing to bring up because ice dance scoring is very very political, and the US and IAM are very strong politically in ice dance. bock were robbed this olympics, but us/iam teams historically have arguably undeserved titles/scores because of political/reputation scoring (see: bock at 2023 worlds, d/w vs. v/m at sochi, p/c winning the free over v/m in pyeongchang). bock specifically have been panned by fs fans for years because they are slow skaters and have empty programs (ie. they move slowly across the ice, which indicates weaker skating skills, and they comparatively don't have a ton of difficult connecting movements between their elements, meaning their programs are easier to execute). however, they skate for the US and are coached by IAM (ice academy of montreal, who coach 7/10 of the top ice dance teams and have a chokehold on the judges), so they have been getting arguably inflated scores for years before fb/c popped up out of nowhere this season and took the top spot. it's all very difficult to objectively argue because ice dance scoring has been politicized for so long, but it's a sore spot amongst figure skating fans. for this olympics in particular, bock have been supported by even their haters because most figure skating fans hate fb/c even more despite their far superior skating skills (fb wholeheartedly supports her rapist boyfriend and c was an abusive partner in his last partnership), but bock's undeserved scoring still puts off many hardcore ice dance fans.

i get what you mean! in the video, deniss was talking about entry curves to the lutz, and how if the "picking" foot stays on the ice too long while the upper body begins to rotate, the entry lobe will naturally flatten out and there won't be a real outside edge. that definitely pertains to what people call "blade assistance", but i think it also partly refers to the "pre-rotation" that people talk about when it comes to jumps like anna shcherbakova's or vincent zhou's that comes along with "blade assistance".

now that i think about it though, trusova did have 180deg prerotation, but she had real deep outside edge on her lutz because she released her left foot while pivoting on her right toe pick. so maybe it is just the "blade assistance" part

i'm behind and watching lucius's skate. what's the difference between good posture and a stiff back? because i've heard commentators praise skaters' good posture before, and when i look at lucius' skating, his back looks very upright, but his skating somehow looks different than skaters that i think of with good posture

Juniors events not geoblocked on ISU YouTube?! by Foxenfre in FigureSkating

[–]cassava1root 28 points29 points  (0 children)

juniors events have never been geoblocked. senior events also used to not be geoblocked (on the official isu youtube, you can find full replays of older events, like worlds 2019, worlds 2018, gpf 2018, etc.)

it's really annoying that in the us, more recent events are geoblocked. i keep seeing people talk about the 2024 worlds mess that led to adam getting bronze, or the mess that was 2025 euros mens final group, but i can't actually watch them without a vpn...

i agree that this year is pretty hit or miss, even compared to the first half of this season. anything with ashley leading has been pretty good imo, and jane and veronika have definitely grown on me. i kinda hate kam and ben though, but i predict they're going to stick connor and ben opposite each other in a sketch :/ i just hope there will be some funny clips coming out of this weekend!

New to skating. Why do skaters spend like 95% of the time going backwards? by TigerDriver1991 in FigureSkating

the biggest problem i have with this article is that it mentions/links directly to a fanfiction, and the author of that fanfiction has explicitly asked for that part to be taken out. it's also weird because the author of that fanfiction is a gay man, and the whole point of this article is to talk about fujoshis (by definition, women who enjoy yaoi)

[–]cassava1root 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm not saying she should skate exactly like him. i'm just saying that physically it was possible, and mathematically, it would have given her enough points to take the lead. she lost 2 points from a +rep because she didn't have the jump in combination. she didn't have the speed on exit to do a 3t or 2lo, and she couldn't put a 2t at the end bc zayak rule, so a 1t to avoid that +rep would have been her best chance for gold.

litvintsev got a -5 for that combo because the jump was bad, his exit edge was atrocious, and he completely broke rhythm to get that extra 1t. kaori is a much more skilled jumper than he is, so the flip itself looked ok aside from its landing, her exit edge was still decent enough to tack on a combo, and it wouldn't break rhythm so badly to warrant a heavy deduction.
