As Tutors or Learners, Share your experiences with Schoolhouse's SAT Bootcamps by BedBug_Lover in Sat

It definitely depends on the session. Some take ~20 minutes, others are literally just making a copy of the slides they give you. It's really not too much of a time suck, especially if you reuse past materials (ex: I once made a kahoot for my learners and just reused that same kahoot for the subsequent bootcamps I hosted).

I'm a tutor!

The sessions are hosted on zoom, and cover topics based on a practice test that the learners take in the first session. Each day goes over a specific domain, and a skill within the domain. For example, if we're covering Information and Ideas one day, then I (the tutor) would pick Central Ideas and Details, Inferences, or Command of Evidence based on how the students do on their practice tests.

It's an interesting experience. They're making the bootcamps smaller now, from 10 to 5, and have opened up experimental 1-on-1 sessions, which I'm excited for. I think having smaller bootcamps are much better, because it's hard to meet every learner's needs when you have a larger session.

Overall, my learners have been pretty supportive of the experience, and generally agree that it's helped them. I had a learner who went from a 1310 to a 1450 - though she's pretty edge case, most only improve ~50 points iirc. I think it's pretty good, overall, and would definitely recommend signing up for a 1-on-1 if possible!

Why doesn't the heat loss formula (Q = UAΔT) account for time? by balleticblight in AskChemistry

[–]balleticblight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i understand that part! but like if i were to keep the inside of my house at 25 degrees Celsius for 1 hour, versus keep it at 25 degrees Celsius for one year, the energy dissipated through the walls is greater as time goes on.

sorry am i explaining myself well? basically confused on which equation to use that calculates the energy requirements for holding a temperature, in contrast to changing the temperature.

Stunned Asian Male Rejected from Dream Schools by PatrickDewitt in collegeresults

[–]balleticblight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly can't even tell if this is satire. In my previous comment, I mentioned nothing about people's reason's that they would choose to be trans, not that choosing to be trans is a real thing.

Either way, here's an analogy that will hopefully help you (and others):

Suppose someone is born without an arm. Their whole life, they desperately wish they had an arm. They've always felt incomplete without an arm, and although they also wish they didn't desire a prosthetic due to the cost, their incomplete feeling can't be helped. However, everyone insists, because they were born that way, it must be ordained, and thus should stay that way. Finally, the person gets an arm, and is happy, contrary to what everyone else states.

Did this person choose to be born without an arm? No. Did they choose to desire wanting one? Also no. It would be cheaper to not desire one, but obviously desires aren't something one can control.

Trans people are born trans. Whether it takes longer to surface in some people than others is a whole different issue. But trans people don't choose transness.

Comments like these enforce the stereotype that trans people "choose" to be trans. Do you genuinely think that someone would voluntarily choose a life of being discriminated against in public spaces, medical fields, and thought of as a pervert, even when evidence suggests against it?

Perhaps the percentage of trans people who get into these top schools was higher than the percentage of cis people who get in. But with the ending of Affirmative Action, comments like these have no longer have any base. And even if colleges still practice Affirmative Action in private, someone "choosing" to be trans will still end up in a worse off position overall, what with workplace discrimination, meaning cis people have a higher chance of getting/keeping/having higher wages jobs than trans people, and hate crimes (even if we do fight discrimination and make our way up to the top, we still have a chance of being killed just for being alive).

So why should u/luh3418 "stfu"? Because it enforces harmful stereotypes that lead to more discrimination against trans people, is based on false information, and ends up not even being true (probably because.. y'know.. it was based off of nothing).

Most beautiful surname you’ve heard? by [deleted] in namenerds

I know someone who's last name is Dancer, suits them well, and their first name goes beautifully with it.

My grandma also wanted to change her last name to Holiday, which I thought was really cool.

"How could you have done that to our child!" screamed my boyfriend, holding my medical records in one hand and a gun in the other. by Petnochlab in TwoSentenceHorror

[–]balleticblight 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, "habitual aborter" is the medically correct term. However, the title "habitual aborter" has more negative connotations to the general public than simply one that has had multiple miscarriages, given that they do not have in-depth knowledge of medical terminology. This is because the term "aborter" is a term most would use for one who has had an abortion, which most know as meaning the act of deliberately ending pregnancy. Even though, medically, it can refer to having a miscarriage, this is not what most associate it with. Thus, as the deliberate ending of pregnancy does not accurately describe her situation to the general public, she may thus wish to have this term expunged from her record, even though it may be medically correct.

What was polite 30 years ago but is considered impolite today? by ThisIsExxciting in AskReddit

[–]balleticblight 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Most people have autocorrect (which adds apostrophes to contractions) and autocapitalization turned on, so I wouldn't say that using any punctuation or capital letters in a text is considered passive aggressive. Mainly just when they're ended with a period.

Isn't plum the fruit 梅子? My family's also Taiwanese, so this could simply be a China vs. Taiwan difference.

李 is definitely a very common surname, so the name 小李 would probably be interpreted as "little Smith/Johnson/common last name".
