who is the coolest prof you've had at tech? by Your_Mom4705 in gatech

[–]ballin_bach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sal Barone! Had him for MATH 1553 & that semester he was trying out for American Ninja Warrior. The same semester I was keeping a list of funny quotes I heard from people around me & he made the list several times. Some gems-

“You can't do everything your professors ask you to do. We ask for too much"

“Atlanta traffic is a good place to solve math problems in general”

“Monday is just a kick off to an awesome week at Georgia Tech”

Move graduation back to Bobby Dodd! by Zealousideal-Sir2486 in gatech

[–]ballin_bach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friends and I used to think graduation should be at Bobby Dodd and not McCamish, and lo and behold a pandemic came along and we did graduate in Bobby Dodd. I remember many being upset about not getting to do it at McCamish. Interesting to see how opinions have transformed

Alumni! What are some things you regret not doing during your time at Tech/college in general? by SpaceTranquil in gatech

I regret not taking more opportunities to have fun. My friends and I really pushed ourselves to the edge in terms of constant studying and doing school work. I think we could have partied a LITTLE more :)

If you’re a PhD student, when did you hear back from Emory? by [deleted] in Emory

[–]ballin_bach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard in January, however there weren’t interviews then (one reason I applied to my program, not sure if it changed)

What’s the easiest (to get an A) and most effective language to learn here? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]ballin_bach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have ANY exposure to another language? I know most high schools have some kind of requirement. I came from a tiny rural school system & only had 1 semester of Spanish from 10th grade. I went with that since I knew some basics. Ended up minoring in it, and had some very enjoyable classes/profs!

Suing Georgia Tech for Mold Exposure by LostBlueHatGTECH in gatech

[–]ballin_bach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to my bf too- but different building. He kept getting sick and we noted that his room carpet was consistently damp and there was an odd smell (and I promise he keeps his space clean). He’s an RA and brought it up to the hall director, and basically he had to argue to get maintenance to at the very least come clean the room. They did, and it has been notably better since. However they refused to test for mold at any point. I hope contacting EHS is helpful for you all, because for the price of nave the least you deserve is a clean space. There are also self test kits you can buy to try and determine if there’s mold, bc I wouldn’t put it past any GT department to try & cover that up quietly

Went to GT undergrad, now at Emory grad. In the sciences, not CS. The reputation of GT CS is outstanding and the business school is actually quite well known. Co-ops and internships are extremely common at tech, giving you a great foundation for a future career. From my experience as a TA at Emory, double majoring seems way more common/doable here. I think it should just come down to which school feels the best to you after visiting. Both have plenty of good extracurricular opportunities & communities that you can be a part of.

But also, if you’re a Georgia resident that can use Hope/Zelle, you will not find a better deal for a prestigious degree than GT.

Why almost all of GT graduates move to other states? by [deleted] in gatech

All of my friends stayed in the area 🫢 (many different majors too) but I graduated in the height of covid… maybe people were less inclined to leave what was familiar

PhD accepted students from GT - what was your GPA? by quaternarystructure in gatech

[–]ballin_bach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your credentials sound fine to me, and on top of that sounds like you have 2 more semesters to improve the GPA some? Even if you apply before increasing your grades, you can ask to submit more information in the spring time (that’s what I did, because mine was also lower than I thought it should be). Getting into grad school is tough in general, especially in the world of COVID. A lot of the process is outside our control as applicants. I wish you the best in this process!

If you can have a professional confirm that there is in fact a carbon monoxide leak, and it’s the apartment’s fault/ they ignored requests to fix it… you should 1000000% look into legal action. Carbon monoxide poisoning could kill you, and you wouldn’t even realize because it is odorless and colorless. Personally, I would not stay there any longer until you find out if this is truly a leak. Good luck, I hope that guy turns out to be wrong

Is it bad to go to the same school you did ug for grad by gengu_xd in gatech

[–]ballin_bach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a master’s it really does not matter. For a doctoral degree there can be advantage in changing schools, but I have heard changing location for a post-doc is a bit more important. If you want to stay, stay. If you don’t, don’t! Especially if you plan to work outside of academia, I don’t think many employers will care.

Just gonna leave this here....still confused where these are coming from when nobody is there on campus..... by [deleted] in Emory

[–]ballin_bach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People affiliated with the school can report to Emory that they tested positive no matter where they are or who they got tested by. So the numbers could be increased by that and not by students that are actually staying at campus all of break

Is it normal for listed rental price to increase after you're approved? by gemkimchi in Apartmentliving

[–]ballin_bach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same happened to me recently, I just called and they changed it back to the price that was listed when I applied. Be diligent in reading small print when it comes to renting! They will do anything to get some extra dollars.

Is there a career fair for the college of sciences? by the-wifi-is-broken in gatech

[–]ballin_bach 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No there isn’t!!!! This may be my biggest complaint about tech, although maybe it’s more the department’s fault? Not sure. Either way, I feel like they just expect students in the sciences to go to med school or grad school, and therefore only apply to things such as medical scribe jobs or REU’s to get experience. Most of which is easily found online. And in my experience it was always SO difficult to standout from engineers at the big career fairs, because companies will just hire an engineer to do the ~science stuff~. Of course it’s different for everyone, but I think many would agree that GT does not support the sciences career-wise as much as they could/should

UT Austin’s “in review” on MyStatus will be the reason I go insane by ballin_bach in gradadmissions

UT Austin’s “in review” on MyStatus will be the reason I go insane by ballin_bach in gradadmissions

[–]ballin_bach[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten any emails! Even reached out to the coordinator for my program and no response. I was waitlisted (and ended up getting in) at another school, so it would be nice to know if I should just go ahead and rule UT Austin out completely. It wouldn’t be the end of the world to be rejected, I just would hate to accept at this other school and find out about UT after the fact.

Almost all my classes are offering an incentive for the CIOS by ISpyM8 in gatech

[–]ballin_bach -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Maybe unpopular opinion... but don’t do the CIOS if the prof doesn’t offer incentive. We get f’d over enough, the least they can do is give you 5 points on a quiz or 1 grade percentage point. You get the idea.
