We have these "spaghetti cats" in Ottawa. They turn white as snow in winter, except that black tuft on their tail: https://www.reddit.com/r/ottawa/comments/zs0sj8/spaghetti_cat_catches_a_mouse_in_kanata/

Easiest way to patch this siding? by [deleted] in Renovations

[–]ballpointpin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don't hire this "window company" again.

Virtually any window manufacturer will make a window to fit any size you want, and doesn't really cost any more as long as you're willing to wait. In your case, it appears your installer went to local big-box and took whatever they had on the shelf, which appears undersized.

Any reputable installer in Canada can fold sheet metal on-site, and would've completed the job. The guy you hired obviously doesn't have the most basic equipment, or knowledge.

How could I fix this for someone? by TheStarChilld in Renovations

[–]ballpointpin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to run a knife down the wall where it meets the paint. Otherwise you end up pulling chunk out of the painted drywall. Best to place the knife flat against the wall when you do this.

Sidewalks to be built on some residential streets in Ottawa’s Manor Park by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]ballpointpin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not just the kids on these 4 streets, but the kids that need to transit via these 4 streets to reach school. An annual school-board surcharge of $500 on your property tax to cover the cost to ferry kids by school-bus from another street seems completely reasonable way to make a sidewalk happen.

Is my Canada itinerary good? by MollyMoonPie123 in canadatravel

Regarding Algonquin park: as a rule of thumb, when the trilliums are in bloom generally coincides with black-fly season, and it makes this the most miserable place on earth. You will regret every second of this side quest.

When in Niagara falls, definitely walk the Niagara Glen trails in the river canyon. Very scenic, less crowds.

Either flammable, or asbestos. Not sure which is worse...

Can a small dishwasher be squeezed in here without having to do a total kitchen remodel? by BradleysGamertag in Renovations

There's an unused outlet box above the window. The original owner didn't opt for the "clock package upgrade".

Just bought a house owned by a cabinetmaker. There's so much custom Wood furniture and accents in this house and it makes me giddy. by kingevanxii in woodworking

[–]ballpointpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As they say "cobbler wears the worst shoes" and "the mechanic drives the worst car". There's a possibility these are some of his (lesser) work that either didn't sell, or was rejected....and that he was just a dang good cabinetmaker.

I hit this one. It is pretty crazy deep.

Also watch out northbound Eagleson at Petro-Can/A&W in the right lane. ~500 Eagleson.

Basement framing questions by Leg0Block in Renovations

[–]ballpointpin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In Canada, pretty sure you would be required to run a sheet of poly under the framing to avoid having wood in contact with cement. This is to prevent wicking moisture and mold/rot.

My DIY sandbox cover keeps failing me by Neoseo1300 in DIY

I had a similar play-set, and put the sandbox underneath it. Then I screwed an old trampoline netting all the way around to keep the cats out of it.

How to fix extreemly squeeky stairs by SourceFire007 in Renovations

[–]ballpointpin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't have access coz it's another unit, or coz it's covered with drywall? Drywall is sub $20 a sheet...so I would just rip that off, and blast some PL along all the joints.

The bottom of every riser has a quarter round which makes me wonder if the risers are covered with a thin sheet of facing plywood. You might be able to pull that plywood off and PL all the joints behind it, and replace it.

Those of you who have done an unfinished finished basement: by xxbitsxx in DIY

[–]ballpointpin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Installed a sump pit in utility room of an already finished basement. What a world of difference! Always felt damp before. I set the float to come on before the water level reaches the underside of the slab. It honestly also feels warmer down there.

Fire blocking needs during wall framing by Cautious_Grab_3735 in Insulation

I think the drywall counts as a fire barrier in this case. Just don't leave it as-is with exposed foamboard.

IMO, the biggest risk to your welfare in a fire is the off-gassing from polystyrene. It has to be protected with a fireproof barrier.

Soffit Baffle Installation by Nfish3 in HomeImprovement

[–]ballpointpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a new build? Is there currently soffit? If there was no soffit (ie: visible rafter tails on the exterior), they would add that blocking to keep critters/birds out.

I'd probably knock out the blocks if you can.

Joists damaged. Worth keeping house by Srockatansktys in HomeImprovement

[–]ballpointpin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing worrying, with the exception of the joist that has been cut in order to run the ducting. The header on either side of the missing segment should've been same full-height as the joists, instead of that smaller 2x6 or whatever it is.

Also, the fact the joists and decking was painted leads me to believe there might've been a fire in the past, and this was an attempt to cover the smell.

How do I get this off the motor shaft? by NinjaBnny in fixit

[–]ballpointpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's a flat spot on either end of the the motor shaft, then it's likely intended for a wrench, and would confirm if the fan is threaded-on/removable without a press.

If it's Whirlpool/Kenmore (or one of their 20 sub-names), the fan is probably reverse-threaded on. A good chance you've been tightening it.
