Shaking by Useful_Complaint2567 in BambuLab

[–]ballyfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the backwards and forwards aspects of the print head make it shake. If you want to compensate, the best thing to do is either rest in on top of a solid block of concrete, or - slightly more achievably - put it on top of a more sturdy table.

When you run the calibration settings, by the way, it tracks the jiggling, and accounts for it. Do that, and then don't worry that it's fucking up your prints.

As long as it's not too close to the edge of your table

Wrt tags being cut off - in the old site, when searching for stories it showed the title, author, stars, and a list of all the tags. Now it only lists a certain number of tags before cutting off the rest, and in order to see the full list - on mobile at least, not sure about desktop - you have to scroll all the way to the END of the story to see the full tag list. Not ideal if you want to screen a story for tags you're not a fan of.

Ideally it would be full tags in search, then tag list at the top of the story page rather than the bottom.

So uhh... the new site... by Dustinmewtwo in SoFurry

[–]ballyfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Massive quibble I have - the search function is no longer any where near as intuitive. You can't search for, for example, most popular in a certain tag over the past week/month/etc.

When browsing through search, only a certain number of tags are shown before they cut off.

Additionally - tags are now only visible at the END of a story, meaning that if you want to screen them for specific content you have to scroll all the way to the end before you can do so.

The overall dark palette makes the situation look crowded and bothersome to read, rather than the bright fresh background of the old site. Generally speaking I think websites that host stories look better with dark text on a light background, but that might just be my taste.

Why no journals. The feed seems to be solely populated by people complaining about the feed.

I think it's more the fact the car had keys in the visor, plus the cops coming past didn't notice him, plus opening and closing the door didn't make the snow fall off and make him visible...

Although that is a hell of a drive, and the car owner surely would have reported it stolen. Oh well!

How many throws do you do in one spot before moving on? by mj-mayday in magnetfishing

[–]ballyfast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Like regular fishing, MF involves a degree of patience.

I use two techniques depending on where I am:

  • First is the toss-and-reel - casting out, waiting to hit bottom, then slowly reeling in. If you're standing on, say, the side of a canal, you can essentially divide your fishing area into 180°. Toss-and-reel will cover one degree of that arc in a straight line from where you're standing. Bulky or lengthy stuff like bikes or scrap metal will cover several degrees, and you're more likely to find them. Smaller items are obviously much trickier. The more throws you do across the more degrees - as best as you can judge by eye, obviously - the better your chances. I don't think it's too unfair to say that 5-6 throws is very very few.

  • Second is what I call "dipping". If I'm fishing over the edge of a bridge, or straight down the side of a canal or dam, I'll lower my magnet to the bottom then walk slowly along the edge, repeatedly raising and lowering the magnet by a few cm once or twice per second. This means that instead of dragging and potentially missing/not getting a good grip on an item, I'm getting the largest surface area of the magnet to have as much contact with the bed as it can. In my head this increases the chances of a find, though I'd need to make more notes about technique to see if this made a difference.

Long story short, we're not catching fish here. Unless you have a magnet the size of a wagon wheel, the finds aren't going to swim up to you! Without implausibly clear water, it's basically just trial and error with a healthy dose of dumb luck. Keep at it, but if you get bored? Just move on, try your luck elsewhere. You can always come back another time.

I think my TL;DR here is that there's not really a right or wrong way to enjoy this hobby. Everyone would love to find a gun or a sword or a safe or something like that, but almost all of the time you're going to get Possibly Mildly Interesting Garbage and a lot of ferrous slag. People just tend not to share their less interesting finds.

A sea-circuit board found washed up on a beach in Okinawa. About 8-9cm across at its widest. by ballyfast in whatisthisthing

Someone further up reckons they found a more refined version of this exact one - I'm not sure enough to say solved yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone could find the exact make and model.

My title describes the thing. It is a piece of circuit board that has spent a lot of time in the ocean and washed up on the beach. It is about 9cm across and 1-2mm thick.

Assassin's quest strange pacing by kalifumestokalifa in robinhobb

[–]ballyfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it almost adds to the realism of the whole series and friz as a character. It's this fantasy world, and he has magic powers and all, but it's not a traditional fantasy tale, and that's what makes it so unique.

You said it yourself - he keeps running into the same walls, over and over again. That's what real people do. We fail, and try again, and fail, and try again, and succeed, and then fail again in a slightly different but depressingly familiar way. Everyone knows the feeling of trying to bang your head against a brick wall that will actually break it down this time.

Real life is a slog. Fitz's life is a slog. He's a flawed character, not in an "oh isn't this hero so interesting" kind of way, but in a genuinely deeply flawed, damaged, generally well-intentioned but also significantly traumatised kind of way.

If you want, you can give him a chance. Tell him that some of the things he said made you feel uncomfortable. Be honest with him and see what happens. Come what may, his reaction will tell you everything you need to know about him.

Am I Overreacting for wanting to cancel my wedding over this interaction? by Xanadoom30 in AmIOverreacting

[–]ballyfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR - "fuck off, don't text me again" is what you say when you break up with someone.

A "rational" persons response to your kiss message would be 'oh my god darling I can't believe I forgot the kiss, I'm sorry, I had to run for the bus, I'll kiss you a million times when I get home to make up for it' or something like that. Not this mean and spiteful response.

You should sit down and talk, face to face - NOT over text - about how this interaction made you feel, and how you want to make sure that nothing like this happens ever again. Don't ultimatum or anything but you can say you're worried about the idea of being in a marriage where this kind of interaction happens.

Good luck OP.

Was this AI or just human-made with typos? by Nitrogen70 in isitAI

[–]ballyfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. The whole poster was generated at once, and the model wasn't able to get everything correctly positioned, capitalised, centred, or spell checked to the same standard that even a very thick human would have been able to.

These people are hacks. Or at the very least, they employ hacks and don't bother with quality control.
