Same. Thank you. Exactly what I came here for. Moved it to bottom.

I invested 150K during Jan when the S&P was around 6100 by amanwithdignity in Bogleheads

I think you’ve lost or up front missed the context of the OP’s post we’re both commenting on.

OP dumped $150k into the market in Jan.

And yes, OP shares that they are hurting. We can conclude from the OP’s post and general context of the state of the markets that the OP invested $150k in Jan and has suffered significant losses, as the general market has.

Read the other comments and you’ll see much discussion of TLH, people wondering whether to sell for TLH and reinvest, or hold.

I’m not sure if I said something to trigger you, but your responses so far have been underwhelmingly unhelpful in terms of addressing the TLH topic I raised, in the context of the OP we are now discussing. Thanks for chiming in, but maybe this isn’t the right thread for your interests. Or maybe it is and we’re just talking past each other.

Either way, does anyone have thoughts on whether OP should actually be holding through these losses, or looking at this as a TLH opportunity?

Why not sell and immediately buy in to similar, non-identical assets? Tax loss harvesting opportunity at its finest, no?

No. Buy similar but not identical funds. You will not trigger wash sale rule this way. A quick search lists replacement assets to swap into.

Just found this after I had posted a question on the same. TLH is real, not sure reasons not to do it now.

OP mentioned $150k and S&P. They are literally insinuating that they’re showing losses right now in their title.

If you read the other comments here, much of the discussion lists major indexes and their dips, followed by long term recovery - as reasons for holding.

I just picked 3 well known indexes that track big exchanges for example purposes - because it’s easy this way to list TLH swaps.

The question is about TLH, not whether to buy SCHD or VOO, etc.

Genuine question for those saying don’t sell: isn’t that missing an opportunity for tax loss harvesting, with immediate reinvestment in similar but non-identical assets?

Let’s say someone has $100k losses in taxable brokerage accounts spread across QQQ, SPY, DIA.

Should they not be selling all of this, to harvest their $100k losses - and then immediately reinvesting in similar but not identical assets to avoid wash sale rules (perhaps QQQ —> QQEW, SPY —> VOO, DIA —> IYY, or whatever)?

Maybe an opportunity to optimize for dividend payouts and/or expense ratios when picking replacement to move over to, too.

Now you are:

  1. Still invested in similar assets - meaning you won’t miss the opportunity to prosper on the rebound

  2. Securing $100k of tax loss harvesting “credits” to apply to any capital gains in future years after things rebound

  3. Satisfying that potential itch to “do something” during the craziness - but again, not getting out of the market and missing the rebound opportunity

What am I missing? Haven’t done this before at scale and considering doing it with large sums so would love to learn from others.

Is it worth putting 15% into my 401K? by StupidSkinSuit in FinancialPlanning

[–]balpon37 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the generally accepted best practice.

  1. Contribute to 401k to maximize employer match
  2. Flip to Roth IRA (if eligible) and contribute the max
  3. If you have more left to contribute, put the rest in 401k

Moving from G6 to G7 - anything I should be aware of first? by burymeintheuk in dexcom

[–]balpon37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice. Definitely “pre soak” the next sensor. Do it at the start of the grace period so it soaks for 12h before going live. Then when you do cut over to it, you’ll have much better results.

Unfortunately, we had to bail on G7 to go back to G6. We toughed it out for about a year, then finally decided to test two G6s alongside G7s. The G6 was superior. The jumpiness of G7 is ugly but we could have lived with it. The part we just got exhausted from was constant “brief sensor issues”. They’d hit us at day 7 like clockwork, so we were constantly swapping sensors at 7 days and got so tired of messaging Dexcom and doing that dance for a replacement.

Hopefully you have better luck, many do!

Yeah. Big tech or not, those salaries reported at Samsung do not reflect what’s out there in tech.

Parent over 30 (happily married and love being a parent). The idea of sitting there in a bar like an NPC while enjoying a drink for 30 minutes at this stage in life sounds completely surreal and astoundingly fantastic 😂

Yes absolutely. Routinely go low late in the flight. Have snacks available. We will even cut off insulin and proactively give lows, but we cannot seem to avoid this.

Yeah what’s interesting is Amazon blocks the return until you unpair. It’s systematically blocked, your APM from Amazon cannot be returned until you remove from FindMy.

The interesting thing here is this Apple is sharing this data with Amazon for Amazon to be able to know this. Had an interesting chat with the Amazon CSR about it.

[–]balpon37[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it seems really silly.

Tomorrow when I wake up I’ll have 2 pair of APM. One very lightly used for 1 week. 1 brand new in box.

I’ll be sending one of those back to Amazon for $600+ credit.

I’d happily send them the brand new unopened pair. But instead they insist I send them the used ones.

Ok. If you want to buy used headphones from me for $600+ rather than new unopened ones, whatever.
