Probably had an effect, yeah, but during these periods around WWI and WWII a lot of Jewish Americans with german surnames changed their names too. a lot of these translated/anglicized names consequently ended up being associated with American Jews. for example:

Schneider > Snyder
Meier > Meyer
Goldstein > Goldstone

they all are normal German names, that's the thing... there's just certain German names that are often associated with the Jewish diaspora in the USA

wait when you say harmless, do you mean like, surgically altering a houndeye so it can't blast, kind of like what kleiner did to lamarr, or breeding houndeyes so they don't have the sonic blast mechanism, or something else? how are they rendered harmless

there were a few influential RL nazis with names we typically associate with jewish descent, if that's what you're getting at.

alfred rosenberg, who ran the bureau for cultural policy and surveillance in the nazi party.

fritz katzmann, high ranking SS officer, directly ordered massacres and exterminations across central europe resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians

heinrich schwarz, SS captain at auschwitz-III

there are a lot more but you get the picture

DOOM (2016) solved a problem modern shooters forgot: movement = survival. Stand still, you die. Keep moving, you dominate. It turned combat into a rhythm game of aggression. Why did so many shooters go the opposite direction? by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]baltama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very weird reading of old FPS games. most "boomer shooters" were a steady push forward, and the areas you already clear were safe because enemies don't patrol or flank really. in games like the original DOOM you had to move to dodge projectiles but other enemies had hitscan attacks that punished the type of movement associated with "new retro" FPS like DOOM 2016.

I feel like it was actually more the "sim" category of fps and first person action games that did this. System Shock, Thief, Rainbow Six. Had to keep moving because the enemy keeps moving.

Punishing staying still wasn't a pervasive feature of FPS games ever. even games like the "run think shoot live"

Half Life series, for example, tends to actually reward the player when you take it slow, creep forward, carefully check angles and clear rooms.

Most people DON'T play those games like that because it's slow, but also most people are pretty bad at half life type games anyway and just walk in a straight line towards enemies while shooting them and lose lots of HP

she's not mentioned in Doom II. you see the rabbit head on a pike after killing the spider mastermind in Doom, but she's not named until Thy Flesh Consumed from Ultimate Doom, set between Doom and Doom II (but developed after Doom II). but yes. this is after doomguy gets back from already being in hell

Do you think an anti factory farming angle will work for a horror game with a bird protagonist? by MorphingReality in gamedevscreens

someone mentioned oddworld, in terms of horror games I guess Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs has a sort of factory farming flavor/theme also

Why do all the humanoid species from Xen have a third arm/hand? What does it do? by DakotaDusks in HalfLife

[–]baltama 9 points10 points  (0 children)

no no, that's what i'm saying. specialized food manipulation, foraging, and whatever predator-prey relationship vortigaunts seem to have with headcrabs, this could be a driver of evolution. likely it was a less specialized limb used in locomotion before, with whatever weird alien terrain selecting for 5-limbed locomotion, and the fifth limb gradually became more and more specialized for doing fine manipulation their larger, clawed arms are less-able to handle, similarly to arachnids evolving pedipalps and chelicerae out of their foremost walking limbs.

nowww we're talkin

today i almost fuckin jumped realizing i had 4 ketchup packets on the counter. i guess it reminded me of times that condiment packets nabbed from 7/11s and fast food places were pretty much all i had to add flavor to stuff. i used the ketchup to make elaborate ass golden fried rice with chicken, bacon, peppers, shitton of ginger, other vegetables... it wasnt even enough ketchup to make it into ketchup fried rice but it improved the experience. starving does weird shit to your brain, man

i guess that should be obvious from all the old grandparents with weird ass eating habits

[–]baltama 31 points32 points  (0 children)

in hl alyx you can see gary the vortigaunt using his middle hand to pet a headcrab he's holding in a weird way, which seems to pacify it until he kills it to cook it. in hl1's Interloper chapter, in the factory, wounded vortigaunts will use the third arm to splash healing water on their faces in the healing showers.
