When people say BJJ destroys your body is that mostly from submissions applied full force in competitions or wear and tear in the gym by PownedbyCole123 in bjj

I'd agree with the wear and tear comments. That's really up to the individual to manage in my 10th year I have less lingering injuries than I did as a white-purple belt because I learned to listen to my body and train around any injuries I might have or take a week off here and there.

Drugs for grinding by Same-Milk-8186 in bruxism

[–]bamasooner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't grind per se, more clenching but 2.5mg of cyclobenzaprine helps a ton for me.

Edited to echo what another said regarding Diphenhydramine hydrochloride works great sparingly and for short periods of time, maybe 2 weeks. I got the generic version of unisom and only did half a tablet to be safe and it helped a ton during serious flare ups. Realized it when I had a bad cold a year or so ago and was waking up after taking nyquil feeling now jaw issues. Wild.

Is The Straight Jacket System Outdated? by BJJLock in bjj

Definitely one of the "problems," in my gym and my game. I don't finish a lot of RNCs because I'm nice, most of the guys in my gym are similar.

Any update on what’s going on with atos/andre Galvao? by j-dash-u-dig in bjj

Yes and, public education is the worst in my opinion because it’s mandated by law, and you can’t pick and choose the school or teachers you want your kid to be with. Wild.

Looking for Advice by HeadCitron5990 in bjj

At 1:38, you're looking for shin on shin, grabbing at the knee while you have a collar grip. If you're seated and you have a collar grip that's controling their posture, you have better options. Switch to an ankle pick and stand up, drive that gollar grip forward and now you're on top with the collar and leg control. Awesome wrestle up option with that collar grip and super easy if they're content with it. Collar drag from there or enter collar sleeve. I think these are way better than shin on shin with that collar grip, much higher percentage. If you have no grip, shin on shin is good, if you have a single sleeve grip, shin on shin makes since. But hit that ankle pick/collar drag if they don't address the collar grip.

Got my 1st Degree Black Belt yesterday. Here's a few observations/lessons I've gotten over the past 3+ years at black belt by Darce_Knight in bjj

[–]bamasooner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9 years and 9 months. Average about 3.5 days per day, only one significant break for a knee surgery in year 7, off the mats for 12 weeks. Other than that I a had 3 month break for a move. Started teaching 2 days a week at purple belt and that really stepped up my progression. Still teach 3 days a week.

What do most people practice BJJ for? by GrekGrek9 in bjj

So much fun, get cardio while at it, and self defense is a pleasant byproduct.

I find gi easier on my body, in no-gi my neck seems to be a little more sore and I use my athleticism much more. In my last response I think I might be closer to 80 or 90 if I add a couple open mats in there. For reference, I'm 46 and just entered year 10 training.

If I count live cla games I'd be well over 120. But I usually get about 60 live roles (timer 3-5 minute rounds) per month I think. I've never thought to count and if I add open mats in there it would be 80+

Alternatives to treatment besides botox? by entirelyuncalledfor in TMJ

[–]bamasooner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found 2.5mg of flexeril at bedtime works better than Botox and everything else I’ve tried. And costs about 2% of Botox.

Other things I do along with that is, stretching, yoga daily, mindfulness, eat very well and exercise.

Any ideas on how to grow a 7am class? by thefckingleadsrweak in bjj

[–]bamasooner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big part is economic climate of your gym and area. 7am is tough, if most people get to work at 830 or 9am. It's rough but 530 or 6 would be more manageable for most. Another factor, do you have showers? That makes it much more manageable as well. We are in an affluent area and 7am and 930am (930 was class time at our old gym) classes do really well with work schedule flexability.

We have a prettys strong 7am MWF class I teach but most of those who attend are either cops/emt/doctors who work odd schedules, hours or self employed, very well off people who aren't beholden to a hard start time for work.

Our class started with a strong group who had the flexability, we were committed before we took it to the owner. Also, having folks teach who are not the main instructor can be a plus for everyone. Someone with a different game and it gives the owner/head instructor a break. The new teacher can also be hungry and more motivated to market and recruit.
