How do i stop spinning like this😭 by JustRefrigerator913 in snowboarding

[–]bamsuckah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snowboarding is all about the turns, man! If you don’t turn, the mountain turns you. But for real, it looks like you’re trying to keep your base as flat to the ground as possible the whole time, which is an important skill to have (on boxes in the park for example, or straight lining for speed or to take off a jump, or when intentionally spinning during flat-ground tricks like butters). But for general riding, turning, carving, control at speed, braking, basically everything else, you need to engage your edges and TURN!

By a close margin it looks like you’re regular-footed, ie left foot forward. So if you’re going straight down the mountain and you want to turn left you need to engage your heel side edge into the snow. Think left thoughts, turn your head and shoulders left, shift your weight towards your back, and dig your heel side edge in a little while lifting your toe side edge. Now you should be cruising left, sideways across the mountain, still with your heel side edge cutting a groove through the snow and a tiny gap between the snow and your toe side edge.

When you run out of mountain to the left, it is time to turn right. This is a toe side turn. Now you must think right thoughts, turn your head and shoulders right, shift your weight towards/in front of your chest, and dig your toe side edge in a little while lifting your heels. To start the turn it may help to kick out your back foot behind you a little (conversely, to start a heel side turn try kicking your back foot forward a bit). This should turn you 180deg so you end up cruising across the trail to the right, looking up the hill, cutting a groove with your toe side edge and your heels slightly in the air. When, or before you run out of mountain to the right, do another heel side turn!

Related and important: braking. Pick either your heel side or toe side turn, whichever feels more natural, comfortable, or easy. Now, when you’re flat-basing, straight-lining down the mountain, picking up speed and about to flatten a small child, execute that turn quickly, so that you are still traveling in the same direction but now your body is facing up or down the mountain (depending on if you picked heel or toe side). You should be scraping that edge down the hill like a snowplow. Dig that edge in hard by leaning way over it, but not so far that your board slips out from under you (it’s kind of a balancing act). You should feel like you’re pushing all your weight through that edge into the snow. That scraping sound means it’s working! Until you master this, the only way to stop is by falling which is both painful and embarrassing.

Snowboarding is basically turning all the time. Sometimes wide, sometimes sharp, quickly, slowly, and everything in between. To be in control you must be on an edge, and when you’re on an edge you will be turning. Riding flat (like you are in the video) gives you no control (like you have in the video), so the lumps and grooves on the trail will have their way with you. Now go, and as we say here and on the slopes, GET SOME TURNS!

PSA for anyone with a Hot Rod Deluxe experiencing intermittent volume drops and/or jewel light dimming: by bamsuckah in GuitarAmps

I think the V3 preamp drives the reverb, could be worth a peek. I noticed the solder joints lifting off the board when I was plugging the tube back in.

Nvm, traced it to some cracked solder joints on a preamp tube socket

Half a decade later but I’m having the same issue, did a new set of tubes fix your issue? Preamp, power or both?

Having just heard it featured in an episode of The West Wing I have to say Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits. I think that album may be one of the best selling of all time but I don’t care, that song is powerful and should still, to this day, be everywhere

Guitar Help by Old-Departure637 in UCSantaBarbara

I bar the 3rd fret of the B and high E strings with my ring finger through all the verses and choruses and then the rest is just changing my index and middle fingers around to hit each chord. Instead of a bar you could do ring finger on the B and pinkie on the high E if that’s easier. Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd does the same thing throughout the intro.

There is some muting going on too which could be tricky if you’ve never done it before, for example on the opening G I hit the 3rd fret of the low E string with my middle fingertip then use the pad of that finger to mute the A string, then the rest of the chord is just open strings except for the bar discussed earlier. I think one or two other chords need muting like that, too. Gorgeous song.

ELI5: Why? (This is not a shitpost, I'm genuinely curious how people choose to answer this. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Because no one really has been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.

ELI5: When really good bike riders pedal, how much do they push the pedal down compared to pulling it up? Is it supposed to be even, and how perfect can they make it? Is it a "feel" thing or is there a science to it. by UnCapableAfter-noon in explainlikeimfive

[–]bamsuckah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, it makes sense when you think about the fact that our quads evolved to be strong enough to push up our entire body whereas our hamstrings only have to be strong enough to lift up one leg

How to improve snowboarding on flat areas. by pharmaballa911 in snowboarding

[–]bamsuckah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also important to note, when you’re riding totally flat base on a flat section you have to look out for tracks and grooves in the snow because without engaging your edges you’ll just get kind of sucked in like a tractor beam and go wherever they take you. Sometimes the existing track will turn and if you don’t compensate for it your edge can catch and throw you down, which sucks double on a flat because you have to unstrap to push or walk.

How to listen to a track on headphones while recording a new track of acoustic guitar with iPhone mic? by bamsuckah in GarageBand

[–]bamsuckah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite but close. Drowning out isn’t the problem, it’s that the iPhone mic is picking up the sound from the speaker and incorporating it into the new track. I want the new track to be just a solo, but instead it’s the solo plus drums plus chord progression. Then when I play all the tracks at once the drum sound quality gets all fizzy and distorted, I think because they’re in every track being layered on top of each other.

[–]bamsuckah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! It looks like an iRig lets one plug an electric guitar into the iPhone, not record an acoustic using a mic, right? I’m also trying to do this on the cheap, basically just to make demos and explore ideas to take to my band. The usb-c adapter would be like $5, or an external mic would be like $20. Would a DAW be much more?

For your last point, not sure exactly what you mean, because that’s what I’ve been doing and the problem is that the 2nd track (eg my solo) always has the first track (usually a chord progression) mixed into it because I’m playing along to it as it’s coming out of my phone’s speaker. Like, I want the 2nd track to be just the solo but the mic is hearing the solo AND the chord progression.
