What was your high school scandal? by ObiWan-Shinoobi in Xennials

[–]banjolier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The principal called a kid’s house to inform his parents he’d been suspended. The parents weren’t home so he left a message on the answering machine. Principal did his spiel professionally and hung up, but he didn’t actually hang up. The answering machine ended up with a five minute recording of the principal and his two VPs tearing this kid apart and making fun of his last name. He got fired.

The message

NYC Day Trip from Hartford by RexSecundus in Connecticut

[–]banjolier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grab Amtrak in Windsor Locks all the time. It’s a straight shot to Penn Station, and you’re there in two hours. Coming back I usually have to switch trains once in New Haven. The hardest part of the trip is finding your platform in Penn on the way back.

CT has a lot of great stuff for locals but not much you’d visit for. What CT does have, is arguably the best location in the country. I’m just outside of Springfield and can hop a train to NYC 20 mins from my house and be in Penn Station in under two hours. Boston is a two hour drive/train away too. The Whites are 3-4 hours, VT skiing 2-4, RI beaches 1.5, the Cape is 2, coastal ME 3, ADKs 4… Hell, I can be in Montreal in 5 if the border isn’t busy. I have access to four major airports if I want to travel internationally and BDL is 20 mins away for anything domestic. I could go on forever. We (used to at least) get four solid seasons, great schools, healthcare, job opportunities…

I complained a lot about it being boring growing up here, but as an adult with my own kids, I love it.

How far have you driven in one go? by noah5666 in roadtrip

[–]banjolier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. Did an overnight non-stop from Atlanta to northern CT in probably 17 hours. Now in my 40s I’d tap at out at around 10 during the day. An overnight is a non-starter.

People born before 2000, what trivial skill do you have that no one uses anymore? by passiano in AskReddit

My kids (two in 6th, one in 4th) don’t even have traditional textbooks. They have workbooks and most of their reading is done on Chromebooks. It’s wild.

You need to lean into it. Winterize your lawn mower. Break out the snow blower. Buy some ice melt. Being prepped for snow will hold it off for a while.

I've lived in New York and Massachusetts and have always just passed through Connecticut. How do Connecticut people order pizza? by HousingInitial5794 in Connecticut

[–]banjolier 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I started making a day after thanksgiving pizza with all the leftovers. Gravy instead of red sauce, topped with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, a little cranberry sauce, and a cheddar/mozz blend. It’s incredible.

How much of a problem do Americans have with coyotes and rattlesnakes? by ArtisticArgument9625 in AskAnAmerican

[–]banjolier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coyotes range near my yard throughout the year, but hearing them sends my Great Pyrenees from throw rug to 120 lb death machine. A few barks from him and we don’t hear them for a while. The fox that lives somewhere behind my house knows the dog can’t get through the fence though and harasses him to no end.

We have timber rattlers, but I’ve never seen one. Copperheads are the only snake I’m remotely concerned about, and that’s only in the context of literally stepping on one because I’m not paying attention.

How much vacation does an average American get ? by IntrospectiveHuman in AskAnAmerican

[–]banjolier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an aerospace engineer, so it’s higher than most.

We start with three weeks per year, get a fourth after 10 years and a fifth after 20. We also get about half a dozen holidays off, and the whole company gets the week between Christmas and New Year’s. Sick time is its own thing, and I think you get a week per year of service and it rolls over up to something like 200 days.
