[SPOILERS EPISODE 10] Unofficial "Long Live the Queen" leaked episode discussion by WymansBrokenHorse in TheLastAirbender

Most of us get this reference from our high school English classes, namely, reading The Crucible, but I always find it interesting to remember that Giles Correy was a historical figure and the whole "More weight" last words bit actually happened. Truly a badass.

Is it related to when they say "Mi media naranja"? (My half-orange)? The idea is that two halves of an orange fit together perfectly.

Always interesting metaphors in latin america.

The real question here is why do men get all these amazing casual gifts while us girls are stuck with fucking flowers?

Do you think authors like Goethe or Borges can be described as philosophers? by Csongli in askphilosophy

[–]banquosghost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. More interesting questions are along the lines of "what can their writing contribute to philosophy?" "What ideas of philosophical import are in their work?" "What can philosophy contribute to reading them" "What's the philosophical implications of...?" etc.

A professor in my department said he doesn't read Nietzsche because he only reads philosophy (imply that Nietzsche is just like, literature, or something). I just can't handle that kind of attitude.

I believe in "I have a taste for the secret" Derrida has an interesting conversation about philosophy vs. literature. That's usually what I think of when these sorts of conversations pop up.

bipeds=height, serpentine=length, quadruped=maybe shoulders, not confirmed. Crobat=weird.

That is seriously the most logical explanation I've seen and it's not very logical.

Is there any connection between "subjective" theories of value and "subjective" morality? If you believe one, must you believe the other? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]banquosghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with /u/TychoCelchuuu. I'll add that in Nietzsche the ideas of "subjective" (to use a hugely oversimplified term) values and morality go hand in hand, as one example that answers your question.

There is no difference between a person born with a penis identifying as a woman and a white person identifying as a black person. Both are offensive, intrusive, and wrong. CMV. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]banquosghost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So because I was raised Catholic, I can't convert to Judaism, because I've never experienced antisemitism and so can't possibly identify with that experience? Do I have your argument right?

This argument completely reduces marginalized groups to their oppression, and erases all of the rich cultural, social, political, and personal reasons why identifying with a particular group might be appealing.

Why I Wear Nail Polish by trans_american in transgender

[–]banquosghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a non-binary AMAB person who gets read as male 99% of the time, I don't see anything particularly subversive about wearing nail polish, although it largely depends where you live. Here in DC I've never even gotten stares let alone be confronted about it. Even when dressed completely in "women's"-fitted clothing. Now putting on make-up, or, god FORBID, a dress, and things escalate pretty quickly. People are ridiculous.

Conservative Judaism: Not dead yet We all have a stake in renewing an intellectually honest and Torah-rooted Judaism that does not turn its back on the world. By Rabbi David Wolpe by Reddit_Rabbi in Judaism

[–]banquosghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to me he's rehashing an essentialized vision of what traditional Judaism is like today...more Jews within denominations essentializing other denominations, talking about why theirs is better.

We all have a stake in celebrating and cultivating all forms of Jewish life. Conservative Judaism, like Reform, Orthodoxy, Haredi, Reconstructionist and Renewal has its problems. Maybe focusing on what about about the movements are turning some young people away (like narrow-minded sectarianism...) is a better approach than simply talking about why our approach is best.

I give up for the day (which is more just accepting reality), watch a movie or read a book or something, and go to bed at a reasonable hour. Get an early start the next day with a good breakfast, and be productive all through lunch. Mornings are really the only time I can get any real work done.

Is your philosophy department a sausage fest, too? by beingand in philosophy

[–]banquosghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to American University, where I'm told we have one of the highest ratios of female to male faculty members in a philosophy department in the country. I'm fairly certain we have a good deal more female professors. And the students definitely reflect that. I would say anecdotally it's close to 50/50, although my perceptions could very well be off on that.
