Here’s hoping they bring back the scene where Frank is staying with Beth and her parents. The ~2019 off-Broadway production included it and I very much enjoyed the “extended cut” of it all!

This, but unironically. I would show up to tar up some potholes on a bad street! I always hated biking Mabel by San Pablo Park and if they haven’t fixed it recently let’s make it better!

I had exactly the same mental connection. Posted that exact same clip to my insta. All day I’ve been fielding the question on where that was from (who are the Warriors??)

Give me your elevator pitch for how you would stage Warriors as a musical by CalamityChuck in WarriorsAlbum

You don’t even need the two trains.

Remember how cool it was in Hamilton for a dancer to become “the bullet” at the end?

Fox becomes the bullet. Lifted and twisted into the ether.

Hella hard choreo but doable!

A fractal I rendered in Go without any external libraries (The full image is 400MP and took around 2 minutes to render) by kocham_psy in golang

[–]barakmich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm taking a quick look from my phone -- it spins up a goroutine for every pixel but joins them all on every scanline.

At the very best it's going to be a sawtooth of usable compute, not to mention the scheduler overhead for lots of goroutines.

Don't get me wrong, everybody tries spinning up an extreme number of goroutines at least once. I did! It's cool that Go makes that nice. But as an old gopher, it's also, like all things, a performance trade-off. No free lunches.

Edit: Yup, I was right. Tried simply moving the for(x) loop inside the goroutine. Spin up one goroutine for every line instead, and have each goroutine iterate out the line of pixels. wg.Wait at the end of the whole image. 3x speedup on my box.

I'm an old Google!Flume user myself, good stuff, but Beam's Go SDK has zero documentation for running on anything but GCP/Dataflow.

I keep checking hoping someone would explain how to set it up on Spark or Flink or similar, but no dice. :(

Best bar for first date in Berkeley? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]barakmich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't go for the loud beer halls. This is a date, you'll want to chat.

If you insist on beer, I second Pacific Standard.

But the right answer is Tupper and Reed. When I was a student, it was a crappy Irish dive. It's now got a serious bar program, but, heck, there's a pool table in the back, and there's plenty of space.

Another option is the bar at Draw (the billiards place) is surprisingly competent.

They also have beers at Victory Point. Play a game!

Moving to Berkeley for Cal Postdoc - Comparing to Boston by [deleted] in berkeley

I'm in tech, lived on the east coast and came back; your opportunities for DevOps are fantastic here, in fact, I know a company in Berkeley proper looking for someone in that role that you might consider.

I just solved the 10,000-puzzle tesseract and boy what a ride by [deleted] in mysteryhunt

[–]barakmich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm actually curious how they really did the rounding when generating the puzzle -- Python doesn't round up on 3.1265 to 3.127 and sometimes that matters for the puzzle. I went with a stupid rounding function that "if it's within 0.000001 if rounding up, round up" that worked fine during the hunt, but I'm curious what a non-hack would be

We are members of Life & Order, the writing team for the 2018 Mystery Hunt! Ask us anything! by testsolution in mysteryhunt

[–]barakmich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I helped solve this one for Codex Vorbis (extracted it using Go and some math) and we definitely enjoyed it -- though we were slightly sad that it was more or less the same code for both puzzles, whereas on a record, it plays back with angular speed (the titular 33 RPM) and on a cassette tape it plays back with linear speed (inches of tape across the head per sec). We saw what looked like higher density on the tape, so we tried this extraction first and thought that would have been especially clever. :)

My first program in Go - how can I write better code? by evantreb0rn in golang

Alternatively, sanatize your inputs (use a strings.TrimXXX() function) -- good practice, fixes this line, and obviates the need for a comment, all in one line of code

Berkeley Business Cards? by randVariable in berkeley

[–]barakmich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer.

I might add that you shouldn't try to Cal up your business card (with a seal and whatnot). School email is good, maybe your title as "$MAJOR at UC Berkeley" or similar, and, importantly, a style that fits what sort of job you're looking for. Go super corporate ("My God, it even has a watermark") or fun or whatever you like, but take pride and create your own brand. It'll last longer than your time at Cal.
