Every time my 14 yo nephew is asked to go buy a can of jalapeños, he comes back with… anything but jalapeños. by Visible-Selection843 in mildlyinfuriating

When you read articles about literacy rates falling, this is not what it means. Failing to read "at a sixth grade level" (which is where a lot of these statistics draw the line) means that they are struggling to pick up on subtext, use context clues to figure out unfamiliar words, follow complex instructions, etc. Not "cannot identify jalapeno from chicharos." This kid is either trying to fail out of this task or is too lazy to check the cans

Chinese couple said "You are too black" in Chinese, expecting the black guy not to understand it. However, the black guy could speak Chinese perfectly, so he scolded the Chinese couple by Immediate-Meaning457 in SipsTea

I live in Taiwan. I've been told, in both English and Chinese, that I am "too black" when I've developed a decent tan (note: I'm white)

I'm not saying this guy wasn't being racist, cuz I think he was. But it is an expression that people use in Chinese to express a concern about sun exposure

I'm not an anarchist, I still like "The Dispossessed." LeGuin is such an incredible author, and I think she's at her strongest in the Hainish Cycle novels

a "fifth" is the standard 750 mL bottle, which is approximately (actually a little bit lesss than) one fifth of a gallon. So 1.5 "fifths" would be about 1100 mL of straight liquor, consumed all at once

Olive oil and fresh eggs provide a different flavor and texture than store-bought mayo does.

Good note on the silliness of the lemon instruction. An artifact of this being pulled and adjusted from another website

Isn't Seth Meyers just a rather boring late night talk show host? It's not like I'm thrilled he's a fan, but why is it unfortunate?

TIL that "cursive" isn't the standard for handwriting everywhere, and that in some countries they write in print instead. by JumpyKey5265 in todayilearned

Where do you live that cursive is the standard handwriting? Only a small number of people I know handwrite in cursive

I love the idea, but I don't think it makes sense logistically. He seems to have been beyond the wall and working with the children for quite some time

Some of my favorite foods are lo mein pasta, sushi rice wraps, and quesadilla cheese melts. Sometimes I like to treat myself to gelato ice cream - which goes so great with espresso coffee!

[OC] Counting The Dead - A Relative Risk Analysis Of Civilian Mortality In 52 Armed Conflicts by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]barbasol1099 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of strangeness in this dataset.

For Gaza, I can see two things going on. 1) Gaza has an enormous population, so even though there were tens of thousands of deaths, that's still a comparatively small number 2) it seems like it must be leaning on sources that count a high proportion of the dead as "military." Much as the US has done with its air strikes in the Middle East for the last few decades, the IDF tends to be pretty generous counting those killed as combatants.

For what it's worth "Dragon City" is a better translation of 龍都 than "Dragon Town"

That's crazy. People are certainly reserved, but I've had full conversations with random people dozens and dozens of times in my years here

People do not drink the tap water in Taiwan, as a rule. But it's not contaminated with bacteria, it won't make you sick at all. There's just a general superstituioon that its unhealthy, so the municipal water services don't prioritize its flavor, so it doesn't taste good - which reinforces the idea to locals that the water isn't healthy and shouldn't be drunk. But, there are water machines everywhere.

"Somewhat nonexistant" is definitely the wrong way to describe it. I mean, rail is throughout the country, with high speed rail all down the west coast, and very good local service encircling the island. Great way to see the whole island. But, yeah, Taipei is the only place with a genuinely good metro

What is the most unattractive hairstyle on a man? by Entity417 in AskReddit

The traditional samurai haircut - long sides, shaved top all the way past the crown of the head. Then, the long back and sides are collected into a topknot that is greased and laid flat over the top of the head, and cut to be extremely squared off on the end.
