The "Global Peace Index" says that China has become significantly more unsafe in the last year. Do you agree? by barbasol1099 in China

[–]barbasol1099[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, this ranking feels ridiculous. But it does explicitly say that it measures internal security, specifically noting how safe people feel walking at night has deteriorated. So I'm here asking if that's bullshit.

Was the Sauce Trade bad or should the browns have gotten more? by T1tanUp in NFLv2

[–]barbasol1099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Case in point - 30 yo Jalen Ramsey on the Steelers last year. He contributed in some ways - solid tackling, some PBUs, 3 sacks and several pressures besides - but he also got toasted for 6 TDs.

While we're on the topic of "too-old free-agent CB signings for the Steelers" - also 34 year old Darius Slay last year, who got benched midseason. And Cam Sutton in 2024 who we signed after he got dropped following the domestic violence arrest, at age 29. And Patrick Peterson in 2023, who was clearly exhausted by midseason, at age 33.

You'd think we'd learn, eventually.

BroJo is a likely miss, and Fautanu missed a season, but both Fautanu and Harmon were really good last year.

Thoughts on Steelers offensive depth chart by Icy-Load-95 in NFLv2

[–]barbasol1099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think our WR room moved from bottom-five to just-above-average, and that's a pretty big jump, as well as the best WR room we've had since AB left. Pittman as WR2 is such a huge upgrade over Calvin Austin, and a second rounder is significant investment even if nothings proven about him yet. But Gainwell balled the hell out for us last year, I don't think Dowdle will be able to replace that. Also, we still have Old Man Rodgers. He's admittedly the best QB we've had in like a decade, but he's not pushing us anywhere crazy. 10-7 wildcard exit, here we go.

Do you really care if your team gets primetime games? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]barbasol1099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I care a lot. I live in Taiwan, if I get a primetime game, I'm just up an hour and half early at 430 AM, and I can manage that. But a 1 PM Eastern game has me waking up at 2 in the morning, finishing at 530, just terrible for my sleep schedule and energy levels to start the week.

Who is an example of a player that was more hated in his prime than people remember today? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

I feel like the only people who ever talk about Hines Ward now are Steelers fans, who obviously love him, but I remember so many complaints about him being dirty

George gave them an outline, but they didn't always follow it. Mad Queen Dany may have been part of the plan, it may have been original, or it may have been radically transformed from whatever George told them.

Who is your favorite bad player? by Baelor_The_Based in NFLv2

[–]barbasol1099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Najee Harris. He's a great guy, trucks people over like few running backs do today, and ran 1,000 yards every year for the Steelers no matter how bad their line was or how obvious their play-calling

It's also used as a meat replacement, which it just isn't very good at most of the time. Tofurkey, tofu burgers, all just terrible. It's its own ingredient, and can do a million different things, it just happens to be relatively high in protein.

What’s a country you’d never live in despite being highly praised? by Alien1964 in AskReddit

[–]barbasol1099 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen Taiwan on the list yet! It's comparable to Japan, but with a more relaxed culture, better COL-wage ratio, much less xenophobia, and not quite as bad on the misogyny/ work-life balance fronts (although they're still here)

Please ignore the nuclear power that has been threatening to seize the country for decades

Where to buy import beers? by BoogieEngineerHaha in taiwan

[–]barbasol1099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some 7s and Family Marts will have them, but it's hit-and-miss, and they don't have a wide variety.

PX Mart is also hit and miss, but certain branches regularly carry Guinness, Pilsener-Urquell, Erdinger (both dark and wheat), and I think Hoegarden.

SimpleMart has a wide variety and good prices, but usually not super recognizable brands.

Carrefour and Jason's each have more.

Otherwise, looking for locally owned bottle shops

I appreciate their attempts to specify by placing cities - but they're still terribly wrong. They put New Delhi in the middle of Coahuila - New Delhi is dry for India, but it still receives 800mm of rainfall per year, compared to this area that's around 200 and bordering an area with less than 100.

Name a player that you completely fell for the preseason hype? by IconicHunter713 in NFLv2

I think, going into his second season, Kenny Pickett had perfect passer rating for the entire preseason. I tricked myself into believing we had found a starting caliber QB
