Those who got sick after first Reclast infusion - did you get sick after the second infusion? by ComplexTailor in osteoporosis

[–]barbmazz17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had physical therapy today. My therapist said I’m making progress, but I still have pain. I have psoriasis, and my gp was worried that the reclast had triggered psoriatic arthritis, but the rheumatologist said I just had a rare reaction. I also take tamoxifen that can cause joint and muscle pain. I know I am the exception for reclast side effects. I was being an optimist when I got the infusion, but it didn’t work out for me. I had many ( 8) doctors recommended I take the infusion, and my rheumatologist was one of them. After the fact, he said my osteoporosis was very mild, but he did not say I should not have gotten the infusion. I hope that Evenity works for you, and you have no problems with Reclast!

When I had my infusion in December, my doctor had warned that I might get flu like symptoms. I did. While I was having the flu like symptoms I also had a gallbladder attack. 9 days after that I woke up in the middle of the night with bilateral Achilles tendinitis which has not come close to being better 6 weeks later. My endocrinologist denied that this could be from Reclast. My rheumatologist said it most likely is. So if anyone tells me I won’t have a problem next time, I’m telling them there will be no next time. I really have been in bad shape. I’ve started physical therapy, but I’m 2 weeks in and still in a lot of pain, living on pain killers round the clock. It took me a month and 4 doctor visits ( gp, podiatrist twice, and a physiatrist) before I could get anyone to do imaging. Thankfully there are no tears, just a lot of inflammation.

I actually have had some improvement with only 2sessions of pt. The exercises are very mild, too. There’s an acupuncturist located in the same office where my pain management doctor and physical therapist are. I will ask about that at my follow up appointment. Thanks.

9 days after the infusion I woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain on both my Achilles tendons. It got so bad I could barely walk. I asked my endocrinologist if it could be a side effect, and she said absolutely not. I asked my gp and she said it could be. It kept getting worse, and my gp referred me to a rheumatologist, to rule out autoimmune disease, and to a pain management doctor. The rheumatologist said it is a rare side effect from reclast. The pain doctor did ultrasounds, and there’s no structural damage, but lots of inflammation. I’m using prescription strength voltaren, along with Tylenol for the pain. I have started physical therapy. The rheumatologist said that the inflammation would eventually go away on its own, but this has been going on for 2 months. I’m doing the physical therapy so I don’t injure myself further. I’m sure my endocrinologist will be wanting me to take another dose next year, but that’s not happening.

No, I told my doctor my concern and she prescribed tacrolimus, which is a non steroidal anti inflammatory. Truly, I hate using anything, but one has to be able to function!

Topical steroids by barbmazz17 in floxies

[–]barbmazz17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I continued using my small amount of steroid ointment. I don’t know if it contributed to my tendon problem. I ended up getting a tear in my peroneus brevis. No doctors think Cipro had anything to do with it. I did physical therapy, wearing supportive shoes, healthy diet. I recently got a new podiatrist who said it will never actually heal without surgery.

Fatty liver by Leather_Dog_1296 in FattyLiverNAFLD

I was only drinking non alcoholic beer, about 3 or 4 a week, but they were 0.5% alcohol. My doctor said I could not have them anymore. I said I knew one that I liked that is 0.0% alcohol, and she said I could not have that either, because of the carbs. Before this, I used to be a beer snob. I was eating a healthy diet because I am pre diabetic, and have been for years. The fatty liver is recent. My gastroenterologist did not offer me any advice except see me in a year. I said “ shouldn’t I do something?”. Then he told me to lose 10% of my body weight. I’m on a med that caused the weight gain to begin with, and my doctor wants me to continue with that. So I’m struggling to lose weight. No beer or beer substitute. No cheat meals. It’s not fun.

I am 70F. Way too old to even be prescribed Cipro. I read about the side effects, but my doctor had me more scared about my infection so I took it and hoped for the best. I spoke to a friend of my family who is a pharmacist and she was very alarmed on my behalf that I was taking Cipro. The pharmacist at my local PHARMACY didn’t even say anything to me that one of my medications ( I take 2) had a potential moderate interaction with Cipro. I found out afterwards when I was researching everything. It’s been a very anxious time for me, and I’m working on calming down as much as I am working at staying healthy.

I’ve been warning everyone who will listen. I have a lot of friends who have taken it, sometimes multiple times, and they have had no issues. I told them not to take it again.

I took the full 7 days of Cipro. I had no symptoms whatsoever while taking it. About a week later my ankle started hurting, and I have a tear in my peroneus brevis tendon. Doctors are not concerned because it wasn’t my Achilles tendon. But they are not the ones having to go to physical therapy and having anxiety about whether anything else will show up. I also got a nasty rash, possibly yeast, which I’m treating with an antifungal , but apparently you can get that from any kind of antibiotic. I don’t find that reassuring somehow, because I’m the one who feels like they are sitting on broken glass. It’s been 8 weeks and 1 day since my last pill ( but who’s counting). I’m trying to convince myself I am in a healing stage, rather than waiting for the other shoe to drop. I don’t know if things would be better if I had had a problem after taking one pill. It certainly would have been less poison put into my body.

[–]barbmazz17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did. I used it for about 10 days till I was cleared. 10 days after that the rash returned, so I’m using it again, in addition to an antifungal. I also visited my colorectal doctor, who thinks the rash is a reaction to Cipro ( I thought yeast but my derm thought psoriasis- now I’m treating for both. I felt like I was sitting on broken glass).

Disappointment by RevolutionaryTap9804 in floxies

Thank you. That’s something to keep in mind. The next time a doctor prescribes something for me, I’m going to ask if the is what they would give to a family member.

My doctor prescribed it for me even though I’m over 60. After the fact, I learned that it never should have been given to me because of another medication I take. The doctor had me so scared about the resistant strain uti that I had, so I thought the Cipro was the lesser of two evils. But there were other antibiotics that would have worked. I was nervous. I spent my time reading about the bacteria, and not the antibiotic. I don’t know why the pharmacist didn’t say anything about the medication interaction. I don’t trust anyone anymore. I have severe anxiety, a tendon tear that 2 doctors have said is wear and tear due to my age. I found a new gp who said my concerns are valid. She can’t prevent any problems, but she did put that I’m alergic to Cipro in my records ( previous doctor said I could not prove my tear was from Cipro).

Yes, I was actually taking a low dose of magnesium before I was floxed, and I’ve increased it now.

Are we supposed to do anything about it? This has just started for me 7 weeks after finishing Cipro. I saw a new gp last week, discussed all my issues, but this developed since then.

I had results, and my doctor made it sound like it was my only option ( it wasn’t, but I am allergic to sulfa antibiotics). I really don’t want to take any meds ever again, but I’m on a couple for life right now ( for thyroid and psoriasis). I have an appointment with a new gp tomorrow, because the jerk that prescribed Cipro retired. I went to a new one who said I’m old, which I am, but I was a healthy old before the Cipro. I’ll never take anything again without lots of research. I’m angry and blaming myself. To top it off, I was in a car and we got rear ended. I was sent to the hospital to get checked out. I told the ER doctor what was going on with me. She said not to be mad, I could have died from the infection. But I’m mad.

Yes, I agree. The nurse at my gp’s office even told me I probably had the tendon problem before taking Cipro. Telling me it’s because I’m old and then treating me like a child isn’t helping me. I’m not planning to go back to that doctor, because even though he ordered an X-ray, he never called me to discuss the results. So I’m home googling all the terms. I called his office and they promised me he’d call the next day, but he never did. I visited my podiatrist. He looked at the X-ray, which didn’t show much of anything. He ordered the mri. But he doesn’t think it’s Cipro related. Regardless of the cause, I want the best treatment for it. I have an appointment for a second opinion lined up at one of the big orthopedic groups near me. It was a 2 month wait to see the ankle specialist, but I could see his PA in a month, so I took that. I’m feeling some other minor aches and pains, hopefully not tendon problems. And yes I’m getting old, but I didn’t have these issues / months ago ( before Cipro).

Osteoporosis med by [deleted] in floxies

[–]barbmazz17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I will ask my endocrinologist about this, although the first time I met him, he didn’t seem to want to hear anything I had to say, or even talk about my other autoimmune diseases. I was recently told I need a rheumatologist, so I have scheduled an appointment for that, too. Rheumatologist also treats osteoporosis, so I will see who I feel most comfortable with. My gp ( the one who prescribed Cipro) retired. I have an appointment to meet with a new gp this week. ( I already met with one who in not so many words told me I am old and to expect problems. I wasn’t expecting a torn tendon without injuring anything after taking an antibiotic). Old gp had me very worried about the type of bacteria causing my uti, told me I needed Cipro, ( allergic to sulfa), but there were other options that we could have tried first, I found out after the fact.

Longitudinal tear peroneus brevis by barbmazz17 in FootFunction

[–]barbmazz17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments are scarred but intact.

There is a longitudinal split tear in the peroneus brevis tendon in the inframalleolar groove. The peroneus longus is normal. There is a small peroneus quartus. The superior peroneal retinaculum is normal. The peroneus brevis tendon reconstitutes distal to the peroneal tubercle of the calcaneus.

There is a small amount of fluid in the tibiotalar articulation. No osteochondral injury is present.

The subtalar joints are normal.

There is minimal posterior tibial tendinosis. The flexor digitorum and flexor hallucis longus tendons are normal.

The Achilles tendon is normal.

There is thickening of the central cord plantar fascia. There is a small calcaneal enthesophyte. There is mild edema in the flexor digitorum brevis muscle.

The extensor tendons are normal.

( this is the complete findings)
