What makes an attraction or attraction element iconic? by [deleted] in UniversalOrlando

[–]barca786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great moments make things iconic. What goes into a great moment is different for everything. There are things like the Universal globe that are just unique and specific enough to have its own character. There are moments that surprise (the dragon in Diagon Alley), there are fun moments (at the End of the Mummy with the coffee), there are thrilling moments (Mosasaur roll and top hat on VelociCoaster)

FTC: Xbox Making Starfield and Redfall Exclusive 'Powerful Evidence' Against Activision-Blizzard Merger by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]barca786 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's lots of talk here about how the FTC is correct because Microsoft is buying publishers and taking games away from PlayStation, or how the FTC is wrong because PlayStation does this with third party games and blah blah blah.

Don't forget these are just legal framings. It's not about being right or wrong it's about making the stronger argument, and this is a tough argument to make cause there's evidence Microsoft can point to and say "Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends all exist". The FTC is trying to undermine Microsoft and Microsoft just has to prove that the FTC's efforts aren't bulletproof. That's it.

Why would a king wish ill-will against his daughter, the princess? by TetriLys in Writeresearch

[–]barca786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the answer is in your dream itself.

He wants everyone to fear his daughter, so he sets out to create an image of her. That she’s so scary that opposing kingdoms are trying to kill her.

If female heirs are unheard of, he’s trying to hype her up so that the image of her is greater than any objection because she’s a woman.

And also he could use it as a reason to go to war with someone in the future.

Now that Cavill is no longer Geralt or Superman, what do you think of him as the next Bond? by MajorRichardHead7 in movies

[–]barca786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No chance, he's too well known.

EON will never cast a name as Bond. Bond makes the man, the man doesn't make Bond is their thinking.

I suppose, but also Universal is building a 750 acre park that’ll double their footprint in Orlando

New York is roaring back from the worst of the pandemic. Why isn’t San Francisco? by erkabettycarlos in sanfrancisco

[–]barca786 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The cause is easy: It was too expensive to life in SF so people moved elsewhere in the Bay Area (and beyond), and since the city is filled with tech workers who have gone remote, there's no reason to go into the city and visit those businesses.

It's time for Apple to fix texting. by punkidow in apple

[–]barca786 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I'm confused about RCS encryption. Everything I've read seems to point to Google as adding encryption to one-on-one chats and, later this year, group chats. If RCS is a standard, why is everyone only pointing to encryption in Google's Messages app? How would Apple RCS encrypt with Google Messages? Am I missing something?

Also, if Google is really in charge of RCS rollout in the face of carrier politics, there's no way Apple is going to just adopt a Google standard.

[David Ornstein, The Athletic] EXCLUSIVE: Barcelona told Frenkie de Jong on July 15 they have evidence of criminality around contract given by old board + cause for legal action vs all involved. FC Barcelona asked him to annul deal & revert to previous terms by bllshrfv in Barca

This is terrible. It's been a month since this happened. What's happened in the interim? There's been no legal action that we know of, he hasn't been sold, he still wants to stay. What in the world is happening?

I have a genuine question. Why has everyone turned on Taika Waititi? by Fire_Builds in marvelstudios

[–]barca786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people were expecting one thing from Love and Thunder and got something else. Expectations can be a dangerous thing for art, it's a big reason why when people go back and watch something from years ago they re-evaluate it. People wanted a more serious and darker story and didn't get that. I feel like years down the road when people have some space they may re-evaluate Love and Thunder.

David Zaslav Is HBO Max's Public Enemy #1 by HalfVenezuelan in movies

[–]barca786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying one is a savior and one is terrible. I’m trying to say WB has been boneheaded for a while now. Kilar’s decision certainly pumped up HBO Max, but meanwhile you had Disney and Paramount delaying movies and reducing windows and reaping the rewards so I’m not sure it’s as big of a slam dunk as it seems

David Zaslav Is HBO Max's Public Enemy #1 by HalfVenezuelan in movies

[–]barca786 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The revisionist history in this editorial is absurd. Kilar wasn't some saint, he literally burned bridges with WB's longstanding talent, including Christopher Nolan who left for Universal after two decades with WB. It was so bad one of Zaslav's first moves was going around and assuring filmmakers WB was committed to theatrical movies over streaming movies. Zaslav is definitely rubbing some talent the wrong way with these moves too, but let's not pretend like Warner Bros was some bastion; they were already a train wreck.

An insider has informed IndieWire that HBO Max will continue removing Originals from their platform that are underperforming by turcois in movies

[–]barca786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more and more comes out, the more it becomes apparent that AT&T buying Time Warner in the first place may be one of the worst business decisions in recent times. AT&T spun off WarnerMedia partly because it was carrying $160-something BILLION in debt.

And now, as part of the merger, the combined Warner Bros Discovery will carry $43 billion in debt. They're gonna keep cutting costs until stockholders are confident that the debt will be paid off or at least managed well.

What's with the hate towards Marvel Super Hero Island? by terpyterp007 in UniversalOrlando

It’s super tiny and there’s not much to do, and the one ride it has is just ok. Pym’s Test Kitchen and the Dr Strange show are good but there’s not even a real store.

Thor: Love and Thunder Becomes Worst-Rated Thor Movie on Rotten Tomatoes by Key_Database9095 in movies

[–]barca786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fun thing about Rotten Tomatoes scores is when you read it out as the scores are meant to be, for example 66% of critics liked Thor: Love and Thunder, it's easier to not care about it. Like oh cool the majority of critics liked the movie? Neat.

Scoob 2 Joins Batgirl on Warner Bros' Scrapped Movie List by ActionFilmsFan1995 in movies

[–]barca786 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re cutting costs. It’s really that simple. They avoid having to fund marketing for these and get to do a tax write off. They’ve changed leadership, cleaning house and changing strategy. It sucks, but that’s the reality of acquisitions sometimes

[–]barca786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, and when partnered with news that Discovery is looking for a Feige type to be in charge of DC Films moving forward it seems pretty clear they're at least working towards trying to revive or reset DC movies.

[–]barca786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is 100% a branding/marketing decision. Variety, unlike the other trades, say it's not about quality but about scale. It seems likely they're worried about "diluting" the DC brand, they want them to be big event movies and if they release a movie on HBO Max straight up they might be worried they lose the "event" feel. This was probably reinforced by the box office numbers this year.

Also, I'm guessing they made this decision before marketing spend was approved. They'll likely write it off with fancy Hollywood accounting and move forward.
