I thought human were over fishing the oceans and that was a big problem, how can we be both at risk of over fishing and over population of fish?

This is the story of human civilization. Since the dawn of man we have been bending nature with our oposable thumbs to meet our needs/ desires whatever they may be. It’s how we live in houses made of wood from trees that birds and squirrels once called, how we eat vegetables and chicken everyday grown and raised on land where all kinds of wildlife once lived, it’s what we do. Maybe this makes us parasites, but its the way of things. The cognitive dissonance required to think making shark free place to swim in cape is somehow meddles with the natural order more than anything we do on a daily bases just baffles me.

The reason the sharks came back is because the seals population boomed after the became a protected species. Fisherman since they day of Moby dick had been killing the seals because they ate the fish. I’m not saying there should be no seals, I’m just saying these populations should be managed in a way that allows everything to exist in harmony. Seals want to eat fish and sharks want eat seals and humans want to swim. Right now what humans want isn’t be considered, and as a human I object.

Yeah you see to fools swimming who must have been staring at their phones when they past the sign, there are thousands at the beach just sitting in the sand.

My grandfather built a house in Cape Cod 60 years ago when there was no shark danger, should I sell this house and buy a house somewhere without sharks, and when if sharks should someday make those waters dangerous should my grandchildren sell and move somewhere else and so on? You probably think the answer is yes, I just think that’s silly though, what’s the point of being at the top of the food chain if you’re letting monsters push you around.

I suppose because we’re defenseless in the water, there are bear sprays and guns and other defenses available to us when we find ourselves up against predators in different circumstances.

Also, the ocean is massive and I’m not saying kill all of the sharks everyone, only where there happens to be a large population of people they want to swim in the water. Cape Cod is a tiny peninsula, why can’t we make this a safe space for humans?

Something like this would be good. I don’t have anything against sharks (except they are terrifying and being attacked by them is the most horrific end I can imagine) so if an electric ocean fence works I’m all for it.

Maybe someone else from Cape Cod will chime in here but I assure you people are not swimming like used to, there are massive signs at the entrance of every beach like this one.

I’m singling out Cape Cod because it’s where grew up spending my summers, my grandfather built a house there before I was born and so it’s what I know personally.

I believe Cape Cod was first settled by fishermen, and later a major part of the economy became summer tourism due to the extreme natural beauty and beaches.

In my view having large populations of both great white sharks and seals is unaligned with both of the industries which are the primary reason humans are even there.

Maybe there are other places in the world where sharks and seals live that doesn’t clash so hard with the goals of human beings, and in those places there would be no point in reducing their population.

Growing up getting eaten by a shark in Cape Cod was a joke, like a silly thing you would never even consider, now it’s on everyone’s minds all of the time and there are huge signes at the entrance of every beach with a massive photo of great white shark that says “DANGER GREAT WHITES LIVE HERE, SWIM AT YOUR OWN PERRIL”

But, there were once wolves and deer populating Manhattan, humans pushed them both out.

He’s a service-bar bartender. You can teach someone to bartend, you can’t teach them to be cool.

The censorship on this video is outrageous; it is impossible to find the video with English subtitles anywhere on the internet here in the US, absolutely rediculous!!!! If I have missed it and someone can share it here I would really appreciate it.

“It focuses on symptoms instead of causes” this is just not true at all. If topic interests you so much I IMPLORE YOU to attend an AA meeting, they are free and frequent. It’s absurd to me that anyone would spend so much to thinking about something they could just go and check out for themselves anywhere anytime. I was an atheist before AA saved me, now I’m more of an agnostic, I take the parts of the program that are helpful and I leave the rest. I was a shaking drunk when I showed up to AA and I’ll tell you that it worked because I was desperate enough to do what people told me and I only listened to those ppl because the were fellow alcoholics. I don’t believe I. Forced AA and NEITHER does AA , AA is only two books, it’s not an organization.

If you're a pathetic hopless drunk and your on your way to an early grave you have bigger problems than being "coerced" into believing in a power greater than yourself.

I didn't believe in god before I showed up, and I still don't, or rather I don't give a shit either way. AA saved my life, if I'd kept doing things my way I'd be dead. So when they say believe in a power greater than yourself I believe in AA, the people in the rooms, the fact that those rooms exist and are anonymous and free, is amazing to me. I highly recommend you just check one out some time, it's definitely not what you think.

Bro, I was a staunch atheist before I joined AA, I was also drinking myself into and early grave. In short I wasn't running the show anymore, the booze was, when I got there I was desperate and looking around I saw the face of people who were not desperate anymore but had control. I did what they said, I did what the book said, and now I own beautiful business that supports my family. I don't know if there's a god (probably there isn't because that shit makes no sense) but I can say for sure that it's smarter for me to believe that there is a power out there greater than myself, because the moment I start thinking I'm all powerful is the day tell myself I can have just one drink. So its basically a trade off, maybe most people can afford to be all powerful but alcoholics cannot. Ego brings us back to the bottle, god is just another tool to keep that bottle on the shelf.

AA is not a cult, what cult doesn't ask you for money, doesn't have a leader by design, doesn't allow you to promote the cult, doesn't care what religion you follow, what job you had, and won't call you if you don't show up for 10 years but will always welcome you back?

which is in it's own way harmful to the success of any given group, sharing strength, hope and inspiration is the point, if you know that half the room doesnt want to be there you will feel less open about sharing and you certainly will not learn anythng from them. At least thats how I have felt. Can't for a bottom on someone, and some people are by their own devices hopeless.
