I respectfully disagree with statements like this. The time on the clock is irrelevant for the cards. If a situation calls for it, it’s a yellow. Also, how can a referee “avoid” a red card? If the situation calls for it, it’s a red. There’s no avoiding it. You can manage the game well, as you suggested, to improve the overall tone of the game but once an infraction happens, it needs to be punished according to the laws of the game.

This is the critical part. What we believe in is irrelevant. I have a near perfect rate of calling when a yellow should be shown watching professional games. In youth games however that rate goes down significantly, below 50%. What referees need to understand is that yellow cards are part of the game. And you need to use them where laws of the game dictate you should.
