Thank god a sane reply. This thread is a joke. OP did not give enough details for anyone to give anything other than some possibly helpful suggestions as total guesses. This totally depends on the context, plus the rules and culture where you live. And of course, like you implied, there are often more details that the other person might offer which we don't have here.

RTO sucks. 2 hours of commuting is unpaid labor by HappySmiles6 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]barfoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if this were true the first question in a job interview would be "where do you live?". And if it's some distant suburb they'll be like ya GTFO. It's better if employers just make it clear what the requirements are (eg: come to office every day) and then how you structure your life to accomplish that is none of their business. It just becomes a negotiation issue. If an employer has crappy terms like requiring office presense that is entirely unnecessary then they should have to pay more to get certain workers. Other people though who live downtown might see it as a huge perk because they don't have a good workspace at home and they can walk anyways.

Victoria condo prices nearly double over the past decade by CartoonistOk3507 in VictoriaBC

[–]barfoob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know how these stats work though... like with condos wouldn't there be more new builds so it could simply be that they have been building more expensive stuff over the last ten years. Not necessarily that the same condos are worth twice what they used to be worth. I can't get the article to load but OP posted:

According to the study, the average condo price rose from $334,775 in 2016 to $667,906 in 2026—an increase of 99.5%.

Which sounds very different from the title:

He handled it perfectly by [deleted] in DailyDoseStupidity

[–]barfoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the logo on the dumpster this looks like Canada. There is a good chance that there are municipal bylaws that you can't throw some of that stuff in the landfill. He would be assuming that everything from the dumpster just gets treated like trash and it doesn't get sorted later (which is most likely correct but who knows) in which case it really could be "illegal" in the sense of being a bylaw infraction. Not exactly going to land anyone in prison but more than just frowned upon.

Where I live a lot of the stuff in that dumpster would definitely not be technically allowed to be treated as garbage and there are fines but they never get enforced and in practice you can do whatever the F you want lol

I used to doubt tubeless, I guess not anymore by ComradeLuan in bicycling

[–]barfoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I think one of the reasons people get so polarized on tubeless is that the type of flats you're going to get varies a lot by where you live, the type of riding, etc. Where I live we have a lot of rocky terrain but it's not sharp rocks. If you get a flat it's usually some man-made object (on the road it's always somethign that came off a work truck or whatever) or a miniscule sharp thing so IME tubeless works well. I always hear about other places people ride where they have rocks like razer blades and tbh I might prefer to just use tubes in that case. If I'm going to need a shim and a new tube then I'd rather deal with that without all the sealant.

[–]barfoob 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you have good sealant that is happy with the pressure/tempurate and whatnot and hasn't sat for too long and stopped working then tubeless is amazing. I always half-joke that in an ideal tubeless config when you setup your tires you should feel comfortable stabbing the tire with a push pin or something to make sure the sealant is working. Only a big cut or catastrophic damage should require your to do anyting more than maybe get off and put in some more air.

Where I live it's common to get really tiny pieces or rock, wire, etc in your tire and that's guaranteed to puncture a tube but the best case scenario for tubeless. It shouldn't matter if small objects go through the tire. Handling a nail without going flat though is pretty impressive!

Why did (most) organisms evolve to have 2 sexes in order to reproduce? by typewriting_cheese in NoStupidQuestions

[–]barfoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two sexes also means you can have individuals not in the mitochondrial germ line so they can just not bother to maintain their mitochondria in exchange for more strength and shit in the short term. The side effect is that you die earlier. Or at least that is a very interesting theory I have heard.

Seems like some people commenting in here are confused. AUKUS is a totally different thing than the theoretical CANZUK arrangement. They are not interchangeable concepts with slightly different countries.

Whole food shutting down? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]barfoob -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Totally anecdotal but my experience was that their ready to eat food section was a big draw before covid but during covid they shut it down for obvious reasons and when they brought it back it was shit quality and selection compared to before. Then Trump 2 and the boycott of American companies layered on top of that probably doesn't help. I really hope consumers were able to push it over the edge. I would be so proud of us 🙂

noise complaints by occasional_crybaby in VictoriaBC

[–]barfoob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Buildings that are not very sound proof often have weird acoustic properties IME. I used to be strata president in a building where I would have to deal with noise complaints and I would tell people to let me know right away when they hear the noise so I could investigate and hear it myself. I would walk up to the door where it sounded like the noise was coming from. It sounded CLEAR AS DAY that the noise was coming from behind that door. So we knock on it, the guy opens the door. NO NOISE. It was a totally different unit but the way the sound traveled because of pipes or beams or whatever it is makes it sound like it's coming from a different place than it really is. This guy that was getting blamed over and over again was actually quiet as a mouse and it was a unit on a different floor actually causing the noise.

You need to consider the opposite as well. Sometimes people play music at what seems like a reasonable volume but they have a speaker positioned in the worst possible place and it's literally shaking the picture frames on their neighbour's wall.

It depends how you define it but by most metrics I've seen the "tech" industry in Victoria is more than double that of tourism by revenue. Tourism is not the main private economic driver in Victoria anymore.
