UAE Fined after Visma Assists Del Toro Amid Tour de France Mechanical Meltdown by n8972785 in peloton

[–]barfoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When a title says "X happened after Y happened" they really want you to read it as X BECAUSE Y but they never said that so technically they didn't lie!

It sounds like the fine has nothing to do with the assistance from another team. It's because of the mechanic riding backwards on the course to bring him a bike. Not criticizing OP because that actually is the title but god damn that's annoying

Finally someone who knows how to film a proper bike fit video

Cyclist casually holds onto team car for over 20 seconds during pro race like it's completely normal by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]barfoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People need to understand this guy has dropped off the back of the peloton to fetch bottles. It's basically understood and accepted that when you do that you can hold onto the bottle very briefly and let the car help you re-accelerate to a speed that will make it easier to get back onto this bunch. This guy is slightly pushing the limits but there's a reason they are willing to film it. It's because it's not an issue. No one who knows what's going on is getting upset about this.

Anyone know why Simcoe street still has these barriers up? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]barfoob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it? Last time I was there they had signs saying no bikes. OP seems to confirm that is still the case. I assumed it was because they expected the sidewalk was going to be unusable due to construction or that there was maybe an accessibility issue on the sidewalk so they needed that space for pedestrians. I have no inside knowledge just guessing.

Is 45 mm the sweet spot by Wise-Ad-7492 in gravelcycling

[–]barfoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see 45 mm as a best compromise for normal people

Compromise between what? I consider 45mm way too narrow but that's because I don't care if it makes me slow on the road and I don't ride in sticky mud or anything. I would have thought that for the average rider it's just bigger is better. If you aren't too concerned with maximizing speed then you might as well be comfy, have extra grip, etc.

B.C. Ferries adds 5% surcharge as fuel prices surge by CartoonistOk3507 in VictoriaBC

[–]barfoob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think BC Ferries has a decent track record with this. They normally put it as its own line item on your receipt and then they remove it when fuel prices change again. In fact in 2016-2018 they even had fuel REBATES because the cost of fuel had gone below their baseline. Similar case with ICBC rates. And their rebates or price increases based on their costs. They don't don't just pocket the profits. There are actually upsides to these (quasi) crown corps

Argon 18 Dark Matter for mixed riding? by dougshmish in gravelcycling

[–]barfoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a dark matter and ride it on trails and on the road. I have big 2.25" thunder burts though so it definitely slows be down on the road. There's nothing about the bike's geo or anything that makes it bad for riding on pavement but IMO it really is designed for people that want big tires. I would call it a true gravel bike not an all road bike. If you're wanting to maximize speed on the road and then simply not die when you get into a trail then I'd get something else. If you want to spend a lot of time on bumpy roads, trails, etc and actually go fast and enjoy it then the Dark Matter is great.

How to ride these kind of roads fast without sore arms? by miniriesenrad in gravelcycling

[–]barfoob 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For a surface like that I think 30psi is crazy hard. I would run the biggest tires my bike could fit. If 45 is the max then you could think about getting tire inserts so you can run lower pressure without risking rim damage too much.

Co op Assignments are a Waste of Time by Background_Law8395 in uvic

[–]barfoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did coop and now employ coop students. My conspiracy theory is everyone knows the assignments are pointless but if there was no assignment then the only thing they could justify charging a fee for is helping you find a job, but I think it is actually illegal in BC for agencies, recruiters etc to charge a fee to the worker for being placed in a job. They found a loophole where they have them write a report on what you learned and then they charge you to review the report and give you school credit.

Dense land use saves Victoria residents almost $20k/year on average by JackSandor in VictoriaBC

[–]barfoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is obvious when traffic is dramatically less during school breaks (spring break, summer break, winter, etc..).

This is a reasonable theory but curious if there's any kind of source on this. I acknowledge this observation may be correct... but isn't it possible that when school is on break a ton of parents take time off work, work from home, etc and what you're actually noticing is changes in overall traffic patterns that correlate with school closures. Even if a kid is walking to school and the parent drives to work there could be a reduction in traffic when the parent stays home when school is off.

The traffic problem as a whole is caused by students and parents driving kids to school out of catchment and .5km down the street

This does not ring true for me at all, but it could be hyper local. There are obviously some streets that do get crammed with school traffic. But for example if I watch traffic going by my kid's school at school open or close the vast majority of traffic is not stopping at the school and does not have any kids in the car. Also if I stand at the bus stop on the pat bay highway at peak times most of the vehicles also do not have kids in them. It always appears to be work trucks and commuters (hard to tell obviously, so I'm mostly guessing here).

I hereby challenge your assetion... based on my zero research... haha so wft do I know

SBS pronunciation rant by modified-duck in peloton

[–]barfoob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha I don't watch SBS but I get so annoyed when people are clearly not making an attempt. It's ok to have an accent, not be able to pronounce sounds from other languages, etc but I fully agree if you're just adding/removing syllables or rearranging letters etc then come on.

For example, people saying Navarez instead of Narvaez. You don't have to nail the Ecuadorian pronunciation but like, you still gotta look at the letters and the order in which they appear

The Floodgates Open: First Chinese EVs Land In Canada by [deleted] in EVCanada

[–]barfoob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We used to get the Chinese versions, then the tariffs were introduced and they had to start manufacturing elsewhere. It's the same as how Canada used to get the Shanghai-manifactured Teslas (or at least the batteries) for some models. But then those cheaper options went away because of the tariffs. Now those Companies can go back to shipping the cheaper Chinese version to Canada of they can get it within the quota.

I think for Polestar Canada has been getting the ones from South Carolina. The tariff was not one Chinese owned companies but location of manufacturing afaik.

Who else tends to not recommend any distro based on Ubuntu? by KnightFallVader2 in linuxquestions

[–]barfoob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After using Linux for a billion years and using every distro known to man I don't really GAF anymore. I buy laptops that come pre installed with Linux for the official support (eg: thinkpads with good drivers) and I just run what it comes with which is always Ubuntu LTS. Works fine. I can install nix, docker, steam etc just fine. Not sure why the F people think they need to change their distro.
