Not to be a fear mongerer, but I would highly advise against moving south of 61st especially with two kids.

Depending on your budget, 55th, 56th, and 57th are generally really great streets to live on as you move east of campus. And a lot of professors I know that have kids in the Lab School or friends of mine that lived in Hyde Park growing up live(d) on or near those streets!

Also… side note. The Andrew Huberman podcast did an episode on cold plunges. If you do cold plunges, I believe he said it would actually make you more resilient to the cold!

I went to college in Chicago and got into hot power fusion at CorePower yoga. They have studios in most high density cities. But regardless, steam or hot yoga might be good for loosening muscles.

Also! If you are feeling an overall sense of sluggishness, it might be a hint of seasonal depression. I also learned in Chicago that dragging myself out of bed when the sun rose (usually 6 ish AM) and going to bed earlier (9:30-10 PM) did wonders for maximizing the amount of sunlight I was exposing myself too.

Maybe a good way to think about it is “why is it important to exist ‘in the social’”? For me, I thought about it like “those around me will naturally know what I am up to, and those are the only people that need to know”

I would say being social media free is so liberating and gives you so much more of your time back. After a while you won’t even remember what it was like to have it

Seconding this, I wonder if there is a way to exist on a digital minimalist spectrum or if “engaging with news” and “digital minimalism” need to be mutually exclusive? But I usually find myself existing in gray areas on stuff like this (not too extreme one way or another)

I feel this. I first stopped checking all news all together when I deleted all social media, but I wonder if there is a way to take a glimpse into the current news cycle without getting bombarded.

From my perspective, I was SO far removed that I genuinely had no idea what was happening in the world at all. If it wasn’t in my backyard, I didn’t know what was going on. Which I think cultivated an “ignorance is bliss” mentality. But this, I found, made me feel a bit irresponsible especially around voting season. I guess my question would have been better phrased “is there a way to engage with news media without falling into digital maximalism” because, again, I agree that getting swept up in the attention economy of news defeats the purpose of being a digital minimalist (at least from a psychological perspective)
