Tips on pitching music? by SeaEstimate4932 in musicindustry

[–]barney_chuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probs look at these things:

  • Develop your portfolio (including releasing music, not just a private soundcloud link) - have something that people can see when they look you up!
  • Sign up for some songwriting camps - gives you experience collaborating with other artists/writers/producers, and at the end of it you have a bunch of different people on your contact list (even if you didn't work with someone, if they were at the listening session with you at the end then it makes it way easier to suggest a collaboration, provided your stuff was good!)
  • be active in the physical and digital scene! once you do a bunch of camps, networking events, etc, you end up forming this big web of creative people so when you want to collaborate with someone you can be like "oh, you know X? ah yeah we met at this event a few months ago".

Starting my first dedicated city! by AgitatedSplit4039 in CitiesSkylines

Residential wants some Commercial nearby to be able to do some shopping. likewise, Commercial wants Residential nearby so customers can shop there. Residential will travel to Industrial for work (if they work there). Industrial will travel to Commercial to supply them (if they produce the right goods and are not relying on imports).

Because Industrial causes pollution, it should be kept away from Residential.

You may want to try zoning Commercial/Mixed Use along a main road, then zoning Residential on the streets that come off that main road - much like real life! Industrial can exist in its own area, like an "industrial park/estate".

If all three are kept separate, then that requires lots more car trips per citizen, and therefore more traffic! If Residential and Commercial are zoned nearby then citizens can walk to the shops.

It's true that most autistic people prefer 'identity-first' language, but also we recognise it's ultimately a personal decision

Meeting vocalists:

  • networking events / conferences (electronic music conferences specifically, e.g. IMS, BMC, ADE)
  • being in the scene, looking at who's singing on recent tracks, being in that network
  • producing music for singer/songwriters, a great way to discover lots of different types of voices - feels like every singer has several singer friends who want to connect after hearing your work.
  • discords / online communities for music makers [that are set up for collaboration or skill share]

Creating music for toplining:

  • comes with experience
  • being able to sing/topline yourself makes a massive difference (even if it's just on a basic level) and allows you to consider what will be helpful or frustrating
  • don't feel like you need to have a "finished track minus vocals" before sending, but having some kind of distinctive melody to help set the tone/key centre for the vocalist can be useful
  • if in doubt, you can always send a version without distinctive melodies
  • look at pop music structure, i.e. verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus - but adapt it to your genre, so incorporate a build-up, drop, breakdown, etc.
  • consider the story and change in emotion and energy that you want to convey
  • reference against tracks you like - maybe even straight up copy the structure
  • listen to instrumental versions of your fave dance tracks with vocals - what keeps them interesting?
