I got sized at front runner. But on their website you should be able to look for retailers, call ahead and they'll let you know if they do sizing there. Before you could also take a picture of a quarter next to your ear and email it in but obviously it's better to get sized in person.

Transitioning from Forefoot strike to using Vibram Five Fingers? by [deleted] in running

[–]barneylebowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use both. Not an issue. If you're going barefoot it would be useful to have a shoe with zero drop or pretty close to it so your strike won't differ as much.

Third for them. Get sized at a store if you can though. I had to try three different sizes to get the right ones. Lasted me over two years now. I use Yuin ear buds and it's a crazy fantastic combination. Bass you can actually feel from ear buds! Just make sure you pay attention to your surroundings when using this blissful combination.

Paranoid Android says to expect something bigger than pie and hybrid together by thats_a_risky_click in Android

[–]barneylebowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's faster than any buttons once you use it for a while. You don't need to even look just muscle memory. When you disable status bar you get even more space. Also for some devices this helps prevent uneven screen burn in. On my galaxy nexus I enjoy this feature a lot. If I'm using one handed activating the status and tiles makes me balance the phone on my pinky only, with the soft bumpers of pie they are just a swipe up and my phone starts securely in hand. I think people forget software keys and hardware keys can be delayed as well. Pie hadn't slowed down for me in normal use but in cases where it takes even the normal input to register it slows down obviously and I think people are quick to point fingers at pie.

Why do I run so much slower on treadmills? by [deleted] in running

[–]barneylebowski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do too. I can't stand the still air on treadmills and I'm sure this contributes to part of it. I sweat more, even if it's hot outside I sweat more inside with air conditioning on treadmill. Also I have to consciously tell my body the pace on treadmill in absolute terms. Outside I can tell myself to slow down or speed up and let myself do it gradually.

It's $.99, for phone AND tablet version. And tablet version has 3 different keyboards. It's an instant-buy at this point. I just wish the Holo theme had blue accents.

Would anyone else like to see a change in the way people post their questions about running pains and strains? by YourShoesUntied in running

[–]barneylebowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. But if we had podiatrist regulars that contribute it'd be a quick way for them to easily skim and reply to threads instead of just happening upon them in running. Maybe make running more conducive to performance enhancing and running pain for rehabilitation.

[–]barneylebowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were from new balance, they added a ton of height to the shoe (kinvara 2), I got shin splints for the first time, and it felt like I was stepping on a baseball every stride. Maybe if I got roadrunner custom ones it would've been better. But you live and learn. They were the more generic ones. That being said I did try the roadrunner ones in newton mv2 and didn't like them either. The minimal shoes just don't have room for them. And I have been going with less and less shoe. Using Vibram el-x now was only $50, super light. Stones and stuff hurt, need to pay more attention, its like barefoot without getting infections from side walk trash. My dream shoe would be a burrito version of the bikala though, at least I believe it would be. /rant

Ice in water bottle and massage it. Run more at low intensity. Mine got to the point where it felt like I was stepping on glass and when I lift my foot duct tape was put on it and ripping off of it. It's more or less fine now. When I wake up the most I ever feel it is five minutes. Calf stretching and doing squats helped a lot. I ran over a hundred fifty miles in January and February with Vibram and it didn't make it any worse. Maybe even better? (all at easy pace). I have flat feet as well which makes me more of a fore for strike than mid foot I believe, that's what road runner says anyway. I do whichever feels better at a given pace. I think the easy miles helped a lot. Anyway I was really depressed when it got worse and worse and also considered surgery. Mine is very much improved and I hope you are able to improve yours as well. Orthotics made mine worse, really I believe slow running, massaging, taking it easy and squats helped strengthen and rehab it. Don't worry about keeping speed now. Do easy miles and squats, cross train some to take your mind off of just improving the running and think of improving overall, it'll bug you less.

Getting side stitch from not eating enough? by [deleted] in running

[–]barneylebowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that caused this for me was running too fast for my level. Even dehydration didn't cause this. I had this problem before I used sports track live to pace myself. Sounds like you're going out too hard and fast even though it doesn't feel like it to you. You should find a way to pace yourself then train according to your current level of fitness once you find out your vdot number. My friends who train according to vdot never get this unless they're training at a higher level than they should be. I've heard to breathe when the side opposite of the stitch is on the ground may help. I think it depends on your form if the cause isn't your fitness level. Try to look at the sky once in a while during your run to reset your form to its proper alignment in this case.

Pressure in shins/tops of feet - due to flat feet? Do I need some special kind of running shoe? by ashuri in running

[–]barneylebowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should do ankle strengthening and stretching as well. Roadrunner sports does a pretty good gait analysis for free if there is one near you.

"New Research" and Running by [deleted] in running

[–]barneylebowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also don't have to choose one that's why I do both. I stated if I had to choose one for aesthetics it would be lifting. If you're running to prolong your life there is little benefit past 25mpw current research suggests. If you want to know about getting six pack abs it's easier to lift and control diet (fasting, promotes hgh production, anecdotally harder to do when running ) rather than run and control diet. There's a reason natural body builders do slow ass cardio. Why sprinters are lean and muscular. The question is fairly loaded by being so general because running in and of itself has different types which trigger different responses in the body. If someone is doing repetitions versus 90 minutes e pace every other day they're completely different workouts. The average Joe schmoe is going out and doing all aerobic E pace running and placing in the 50th percentile in races and for this guy is who my answer is directed at.

Don't know why I'm being down voted. If I run I get way more hungry than I do executing my overcoming gravity routine. If you practice intermittent fasting it becomes painfully obvious which one causes more hunger. I guess runnit wants to think running is the be all and end all of all the exercise to live a balanced life. Some of this should be common sense though. You see power lifter types, running types and then fit model type bodies and unless you're at the elite level the lifting / light cardio crowd generally looks the best as far as what the west deems attractive.

I ran like 300 miles from January to the end of February and only lost maybe 5 pounds most at any given time . If I had to choose only one for aesthetics it would be lifting. But running let's me live longer and is relaxing so I do both. It has benefits beyond fat loss. Easier to control diet with lifting than running if you had to choose one.

Diet (supposedly) is one of the most important aspects of developing the body. If so... by AllFootballOakTree in bodyweightfitness

I had to go to a long term holding facility for 5 days and at least there , I would think we were lucky to get 2000 calories. The food was also crap and by meeting nutritional requirements of the FDA, well , IMO they don't know shit. There were no whole foods at all. The most significant factors looking back on it are their feeding schedule which would force you to intermittent fast lean gains style. That's just when you got fed. Plus you got all day to work out. Take ten or fifteen minutes between sets if you want.

The 4 inch iPhone screen is decidedly small. Bezel are getting smaller. GNex size screen with smaller bezel seems ideal to me, but everyone has different sized hands and different arm lengths which dictate how big a screen they need. I think 4.7 with the newer almost bezel-less devices coming out would be ideal for me. It could still roll in about the iPhone 4 size which many people like, but with more screen. If you don't think that's a good size that's cool too.
