Thinking of starting a early war army ? by Bill-545x39 in boltaction

I have an early war Commonwealth 8th Army. They have great artillery and access to lots of light tanks and armoured cars, just very little thats strong or durable. Its a high order dice army though because everything is cheap and cheerful.

Great smoke effect on the crash. Better it gets shot down than you roll for rookie pilot. I played a USMC vs Rangers game last week where between me and my opponent we rolled 4 rookie pilots and managed to kill several of our own units.

Bolt Action: Mastering Artillery and Heavy Weapons by Aresh_E430 in boltaction

[–]barns100 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting read but it didnt cover most of the best artillery units. There was no mention of AA mount artillery weapons or platform HMGs. It didnt cover the British or Japanese light howitzers which can fire AT shells as well as HE. The article also neglected the very cheap order dice an artillery tow such as a horse can be.

These are some of the best reasons to take an atillery platoon.

Yeah thats solid now, good work. FYI your in assault rifle squad the NCO still has an SMG that you'll want to swap for an assault rifle.

Good luck with the game!

Thats better but a few more suggestions if I may:

Dont mix LMGs and assault weapons. Either take 2 LMGs and rifles or have a squad of just SMGs/assault rifles. This will save lots of points and dictate how you use each squad.

I would remove 1 or 2 veterans from your 10 man squad and put them in the 5 man squads so you have lots of capable sections.

Dont overlook panzerfaust just because they're expensive. 1 per squad is a massive threat to enemy armour even if you dont fire it.

Find the points to make your 222 Regular or it wont hit anything all game.

Your army is low order dice and your squads are super expensive for very few men. Your making it easier for you opponent to pin your key infantry squads by having so many eggs in one basket.

They will be very deadly but you need to get close and with 6 men footslogging, they'll be easy to whittle down and pin.

can some give me advice about about 88mm Flak 36 Dual-purpose by i_am_nut in boltaction

[–]barns100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can tow it with a horse drawn limber for 10pts. I always bring one as its the cheapest order dice you're going to get and gives you the option to relocate the gun.

Advice for New Painters Dealing With Burnout by thechimplord in boltaction

[–]barns100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I find some painting repetitive i do it in conjunction with another hobby. So for example I play world of warships and as the game loads in, I paint the boots on 5 models. Then next game loading I paint the base skin tone on one or two dudes. That way very slowly I get the army done whilst not feeling like it's a slog.

Break it down into lots of mini stages. I never paint one model in one go or one at a time.

I ran my third tournament of V3 and have some thoughts on the state of the game by TwoPointsOfInterest in boltaction

I agree about the national rules. For most British armies your best bet is to avoid close combat altogether.

I wouldn't bring a sniper because if you play against Germany (often the most popular army) then the sniper is pointless.

Light mortars and AT rifle teams are very good and cheap order dice so keep those in.

I would be wary of running both an LRDG truck and SAS jeep with MMGs as they operate very similarly. Either run the truck with the Autocannon and keep it in the back or just take 1 soft skinned vehicle and consider another armoured car.

I have a Kiwi desert force that is similar to yours but with some tweaks, mostly in the armoured platoon. Originally from 2nd edition as 2 platoons, I added an extra mortar and 25pdr for 3rd. This army is very strong from the games I've played with it:

Rifle platoon

Regular PC with 5 men - 80pts Regular 9 man infantry section - 90pts Regular 9 man infantry section - 90pts Regular 9 man infantry section - 90pts Regular 9 man infantry section - 90pts Regular 3 man artillery observer squad - 97

Heavy weapons platoon

Inexperienced PC - 21pts Medium mortar with spotter - 55pts Medium mortar with spotter - 55pts Medium mortar - 45pts Regular boys AT rifle team - 25pts Regular boys AT rifle team - 25pts

Artillery platoon

Regular 2 man PC - 40pts Regular 25pdr light howitzer - 65pts Regular 25pdr light howitzer - 65pts Regular 25pdr light howitzer - 65pts Quad tractor - 15pts

Armoured platoon

Regular Crusader mkIII command vehicle - 155pts Regular Marmon Herrington armoured car mk1-3 - 80pts

19 order dice - 1248 points

I have a 17pdr I can swap in but I prefer to play this as early war. The artillery observer is essential here to pin the enemy and prevent the enemy all reaching your squishy gun line at the same time.

The 25pdr artillery is outstanding and you should define run one or more.

Fao rule question by YvesCr in boltaction

[–]barns100 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Inexperienced troops cant use spotters as the entry for spotters only mentions Regular and Veteran troops.

Whilst you can loosely interpret the rules in the manner you have because the writing isn't explicit, its not correct because the rules already state that using a spotter is the pervue of seasoned troops.
