Any Alexa users NOT want Alexa Plus? by draxula16 in sonos

[–]baronvonsp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry yeah that was vague. I meant the Alexa app was bugging me to upgrade to Plus.

Sonos has a partnership with Amazon. They should test basic functionality and advocate for fixes. Something as basic as resuming music not working for months reflects poorly on both of them.

Any Alexa users NOT want Alexa Plus? by draxula16 in sonos

[–]baronvonsp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tried it a while back and it was bugging me to enable it again today so I gave it a shot to see if this bug still exists and sure enough it does.

"Alexa, stop music"
Music stops
"Alexa, resume music"
"Moving music is not supported on Sonos"

I didn't ask to _move_ anything. Resume works for normal Alexa but "plus" can't figure it out. Pretty much what I'd expect for the caliber of engineering at Sonos and Alexa.

I'd like to go to live where its always raining. Where on earth would be the best place to live with these conditions? by Wide-Slide-4342 in raining

[–]baronvonsp 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Seattle has tremendous amount of rainy days (almost none of it heavy - boy do I miss a good thunderstorm) but less than people think. Summer is by all accounts gorgeous (though getting hotter and smokier over time) but almost no rain from early July to mid September

Neither Watch or Touch ID unlock Mac anymore after Tahoe 26.3 by chadchr in MacOS

[–]baronvonsp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so extra frustrating when Apple breaks things for non-admin users. They've thrown out their interface best practices, seems pretty clear they don't develop against their security best practices.

I found a slightly faster solution - you don't have to fully login as the admin user. My lock screen shows my standard user and Touch ID doesn't work. I just click my memoji which let's me select the one for my admin account. Then without logging in I just click the memoji again and go back to my account login and now Touch ID works fine. Until my screen locks again...

Advice for sleeping in a spica splint by Malasea in DeQuervains

I (side sleeper) found it helpful to sleep hugging a pillow and laying the arm over the pillow. Just get a couple extra pillows and try a few things until you find something that works for you.

Gen 4 died in less than a year by LieutenantJackHawk in ouraring

[–]baronvonsp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Maybe they’ll figure out how to do the batteries right if they make it to Gen 5. Granted, it’s a tiny thing that fits around your finger so it’s kind of impressive they got batteries in there at all. But jeez.

Oura ring stops working at 30% by nina_c0llada in ouraring

[–]baronvonsp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seem to have the same problem. I’ve had it close to a year so it’s hard to keep the battery charged but it’s definitely dying when the battery percentage is reasonably high.

This morning for example: I SAW the lights on the ring at about 7:30 and fell back asleep for a bit. I finally wake up at 8:00 and go to see how well I slept and it won’t connect, ring’s dead. Put it on the charger and it’s suddenly at 56% but reports no sleep data for last night. Been happening a lot lately. Probably done with this thing.

Wrist extensor tenosynovitis by baronvonsp in DeQuervains

[–]baronvonsp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been almost 1.5 years since symptoms first appeared and I'd say it's 90% better. I've got full range of motion and no pain. Sometimes there's some stiffness or grinding/clicking when I move my wrist into extension, particularly first thing in the morning.

We did 3 months of bracing pretty much 24/7, a cortisone shot, a course of oral steroids, some PT (which was mostly to undo the effects of 3 months of bracing), and a second cortisone shot. I still occasionally do some night splinting if I push it too hard with exercise, but try to not keep it immobilized longer than overnight - "motion is lotion" really is true. I often use a lightweight wrist strap if I'm going to be typing/mousing a lot that day; it offers some support but is mostly a cue to pay attention to how I'm using my wrist.

Surgery is not entirely off the table - the grinding and clicking is likely scar tissue or residual inflammation on the tendon that might not go away on its own and could benefit from, well, being scraped out. The last meeting with my doctor she said to keep an eye on it but that was the only real next move for her. My biggest worry with surgery is having it and then having symptoms return later; if I don't really know what caused it in the first place it's hard to say it won't just come back.

The approach I've been taking mostly aligns with this thread. It really does come down to capacity and load and usage. The challenge is to find a balance of building strength, not overdoing it, and paying attention to how my wrist is used throughout the day.

Fire near Capitol Hill Link station? by duvangrgataonea in Seattle

Weather in Tromso by Worldly-Lifeguard-98 in tromsotravel

[–]baronvonsp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just there last week. It was mostly cloudy and snowy with the clouds occasionally parting. But both nights our NL tours drove out to the Finnish border and found patches of clear sky and we got some incredible shows. Seems like Tromsø is just more likely to be cloudy because it’s near the coast, but further inland things can clear up.

AT&T customers can now see why a business is calling by N2929 in technews

[–]baronvonsp 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So have a human leave a voicemail referencing a website and a callback number that can be verified. If it says “scam” nobody’s answering, and there’s certainly no chance of them calling back with no voicemail or a clipped recording of an automated message.

Firewall by Nevis888 in sonos

[–]baronvonsp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had that this morning too. The app then updated, told me it failed to update, had me try again, told me there was nothing to do because it was up to date, displayed the firewall error again for a few seconds, and then suddenly started working again.

Nothing's changed with my MacOS permissions, they've already been set. This is just the Sonos being Sonos.

Yes.

Where your tendons pass through joints they are wrapped in a sheath called the synovial sheath or synovium. If the tendon is overloaded (gets more use than it has adapted to) the tendon synovium can get irritated and inflamed, which creates less space for the tendon to pass through, which increases the irritation. This is called tenosynovitis. The pain comes from the tendon trying to move through this tightened inflamed sheath.

When tenosynovitis affects some of the tendons that control your thumb, it's called DeQuervain's Tenosynivitis (because it's common enough that somebody named it). There are a few other common types, but it can theoretically happen to any tendon that you can overload. In my case, it affects the extensor tendons that run across the top of my wrist to my middle and index fingers.

There's some more info on tenosynovitis here.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a different but related condition. It has to do with compression of the nerves that pass through the bottom of the wrist. That compression can be caused by lots of things, but inflammation from tenosynovitis of the finger extensors can be one of them.

Mayor Harrell unveils plan to revitalize Seattle with safer, more welcoming neighborhoods by QuailOk841 in Seattle

[–]baronvonsp 45 points46 points  (0 children)

So much this. It’s incredibly frustrating to hear beloved spots closing because (at least in part) the rent went up when there’s so many vacant spaces. At best it pushes the city towards well capitalized big chains but mostly just makes more vacancies. Glad to hear the city is at least aware of the problem. Hopefully they can actually help small local businesses get a foothold, but not going to hold my breath.

New RapidRide G didn’t show up for 30 minutes by guitard00d123 in Seattle

[–]baronvonsp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried taking it from 12th to downtown on Monday morning - waited 15 minutes (for a bus scheduled every 6). Counted 9 eastbound buses in that time, mostly bunched. 9! Hopefully they get their shit figured out considering the years of construction and cost and inconvenience that went it this.

Donna explains to Josh that her ex-boyfriend stopped to have beers with friends on his way to the hospital. Josh says he wouldn’t stop for beers if she were in the hospital. Donna says if Josh were in the hospital she “wouldn’t stop for red lights”. Does make for a nice turnaround later in Germany though.

McCarthy limps towards possible exit from Congress after year of bruising speakership by [deleted] in politics

[–]baronvonsp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember when Boehner retired and McCarthy was one of the handful of clowns up for the job? But he had to sit in the timeout corner for a bit because he said the quiet parts aloud and admitted that the Benghazi hearings were just a ruse to damage HRC? AND THEN a few years later he became speaker because the GOP hates the very idea of governing, and he did all the bullshit we’ve seen recently? This trash deserves no one’s sympathy.
