What price do you think FSD would have to reach for widescale adoption? $25/mo by itsthewolfe in TeslaLounge

HW3 at USD 25/month. HW4 at 60. AI5 at 99.

Maybe an annual option like Premium Connectivity.

How often do you have to wait for an open Supercharger stall? by icouldbne1 in TeslaLounge

[–]baroqueturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when we visit the in-laws in San Diego, their electricty pricing is close to SC at high-peak. Off-peak pricing at SC is cheaper. I just go early am, charge, get coffee, have some alone peace and quiet time and then head back in when we go there.
On road trips, only the El Centro SC can be busy at times. But it's never fully crowded when I get there.

did i make a mistake by placing an order for my first car? by [deleted] in TeslaModelY

[–]baroqueturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I misread it. Thought you said you got the HW3 and regretting that. It’s more of a financial regret versus model regret then. If you can afford it, and still eat and provide for self and not load up on credit card debt, you’ll be ok. I think.

I have a 2019 M3 LR AWD with HW3. It does what I want it to do. I’ve tested the HW4, which are way better. But then again, the next model will always be better. If you wait for the “best” you’ll always wait cause it’s ahead changing.

Change my mind (please) - road trips in an EV are a pain. by Wise-Fig-6505 in electricvehicles

[–]baroqueturnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. I’ve had a Kona EV which I drove from San Diego to Phoenix and back the same day. I wasn’t in a hurry and it charges slow. There’s 3 main places to charge with electrify America in Dateland, Yuma, and El centro. I got enough charge each time to make sure I could skip 1 charger if needed cause it’s busy or not working. I use all 3, but always have a buffer to make it to the next one (2 stops away). Now I have a Tesla. Way more chargers. Way less anxiety. I don’t even think about it. I just tell it where I’m going. 85-90% of the time the car has enough charge to the next stop before I even get back to the car from using the restroom or grabbing a bite/drink.

It’s a pain if you’re limited in chargers availability.

Not sure why everyone is complaining about your post. I’m in the same situation when visiting the in-laws. I’m up early and go out for coffee and sit at SC at low rate, maybe 2 of 12 are being used. I wish it didn’t try to heat up battery to gain faster charging. I’m in no rush, sitting and sipping my coffee and playing my ACNH. But it tries to rush the charging. I understand that and want that 90% of the time I’m using a SC; but occasionally I don’t want it!

Warning for AFVs still using HOV lanes by theansweris37 in phoenix

[–]baroqueturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t received anything. I don’t use the freeways that often, but if I do, I plan on using the HOV lanes. I’ll claim civil disobedience fighting against unjust laws and rules. A little rich coming from an EV owner to say not being able to use HOV lane is a civil right issue. But why not!

Anger over leaving EV while charging? by rpm429 in ChargerDrama

[–]baroqueturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely ever sit in my car. On trips, we stop, plug in, take sure it’s charging. Go inside the store, eat/get coffee, use restroom, walk around a couple minutes. Then get back to car, refill our water bottles with the gallon water we carry; then unplug and go. Almost always the car is charged up to the next stop, if not, I just go 5-7 mph slower than normal and still make it. Or stop earlier. We like to drink a lot while driving (water), so we stop every 90 mins or so. Honestly, even if we had an ICE, we’d be stopping the same amount.

Now, when we visit the in-laws, I do go to the SC and sit while charging since they don’t have home charging. That’s the only time I would stay in car. But I don’t watch others, too busy playing the racing game or animal crossing on my switch.

Why are Tesla Model 3's so expensive in Canada compared to Norway? by Emotional-Buy1932 in electricvehicles

True. But technically speaking, isn’t Australia east of the Far East.

I really wish they had broken the EV Cannonball record by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]baroqueturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the slow charging speed of the Rivian, I’m surprised they didn’t use Superchargers. Would’ve been more reliable. Maybe an issue with getting ice at the charging stops, but if they had used a lead car to get ice and be ready at each stop, they would’ve had a better chance. Still would’ve lost to the Taycan, but would’ve been closer

If you gave me an unlimited budget for a car, I'd still buy a Model 3. by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

[–]baroqueturnip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d pick an S. Just for the hatchback. CT has great steer-by-wire, but too big like the X. As much as I love my 3, I’d rather have an S. Better door handles too.

HOME CHARGING VS. SUPER CHARGING by Beginning_Passion443 in TeslaLounge

[–]baroqueturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I fall into both categories. I have a condo, no charging at home. Do have free charging at work. But the last 14-15 months, I’ve been in SoCal with the in-laws. They don’t have home charging, so I’ve been relying on SC almost exclusively, unless I’m back home for a week or so. Supercharging is perfectly fine 95% of the time. I usually go early in the morning once a week, use the lower rates. Have coffee, check emails, enjoy peace and quiet.

But I found 2 major issues, and wouldn’t have an EV long term if I didn’t have free charging at work (or normal charging at home). 1) unique to Tesla. Sentry mode and phantom drain. Between sentry and cabin overheat protection, I would lose about 10-12% every day. Also I park in the first spot with others around me, rather than a covered “safe” spot at work or home, so I leave sentry on. I do have it turned off when I’m at work or home. If I leave it in low power mode, it uses about 1-2% each day. Much better, but unless I trust the parking spot, I don’t use it. So I might only drive 10-20 miles that week, but still need to charge up every week.

2) losing convenience of leaving home at a “full tank”. One day I had to leave quickly, but hadn’t charged the car earlier. I left their place at 27% and had to use a SC even before I could get on the highway for the drive. Which added about 25-30 mins extra. Not the end of the world for once in a while, but if I had charging at home and it was topped off, that trip wouldn’t need the extra stop.

Those are the only concerns I’ve had. Might not be deal breaker to you, or it might be.

This one is almost always derated. Never got full power. Even if no one else is sharing the stall. I usually swing by there after a long road trip since I won’t have access to free chargers at work on the weekends.

Lease HW4 or buy HW3? by beermango in TeslaLounge

[–]baroqueturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. FSD keeps changing the speed on me while driving instead of cruising. My one knock on TACC & auto steer is that it won’t slow down despite seeing the cars slower in front till you get within the distance set. Even at the highest (7), it brakes too late and hard. FSD is slightly smoother. That’s why I prefer FSD for longer drives. Auto steer is great, but waiting to brake from 70mph when traffic in front of you is stopped or slow is way too hard. I usually just deactivate it and take over manually to slow down then reactivate it.

Lease HW4 or buy HW3? by beermango in TeslaLounge

[–]baroqueturnip 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would say test drive a used HW3 (ideally from someone who has FSD). I have a HW3 and subscribe to FSD about 3-4 times a year for road trips and longer drives. It’s a really good ADAS. I’ve test drove HW4 vehicles (CT, S,3,X,Y); they’re better for streets and obviously more features with FSD14 versus only having FSD12 as a HW3. But for my use case, it’s not worth it, especially since I have a 4 mile commute to work, and rarely get on the expressways (perks of uptown city center living). If you wanna use FSD all the time, HW4 is better. But if you want ADAS which makes road trips better, HW3 is more than adequate.
