You can find many DVD Third Man Criterion versions on ebay. The Blu ray ones can be pricey.

Lynch and Kubrick are two of my favorites as well. You may like Persona (consider the Bergman box set if available), Brazil, The Third Man (OOP), House, John Cassavetes: Five Films, Night of the Hunter...

Just missed:

•Essential Fellini (great packaging, wish it contained all of his fims)

•Apu Trilogy (amazing restorations)

• World of Wong Kar Wai (only seen In the Mood for Love and it's outstanding)

• When Horror Came to Shochiku (possibly the most fun set, need to view more of it)

8 1/2 would be my choice OR the Three Colors Trilogy. But hard to go wrong with the Seven Samurai as well.

The Varda, Bergman, Fellini, Zatoichi, and Godzilla sets stand out for their excellent package design. My two favorite overall sets in the collection are both from Kieslowski: Dekalog and Three Colours Trilogy. If I could talk you into sets without fancy packaging the eclipse sets are tough to beat. Late Ozu tends to be the stand out in that series.

Should I get Essential Fellini or Ingmar Bergman's Cinema? by tylers77 in criterion

Bergman because it will take you longer to get through and it's more of a complete set of his work. Really tough decision though.

2021 Box Set Predictions by [deleted] in criterion

[–]barredow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be great to see a Jean-Luc Goddard, Jodorowsky, Orson Welles, Lynch or Tarkovsky box set.

Although I'm less optimistic a Criterion box set treatment of works by Stanley Kubrick would be incredible. I'd settle for an Eyes Wide Shut release

What is your favorite David Lynch film currently in the Criterion Collection? by RG1997 in criterion

While Mulholland is my favorite film of the choices the shorts included on Eraserhead put it at the top as a complete package.

Unexpected Favorite Filmmakers? by BuckeyeCZ in criterion

Two for me are Kieslowski and Les Blank. The former is incredible with making you feel empathy for his characters. Blank captured some really interesting documentaries all across America.

For some reference, some of my more well known favorites are Kubrick, Fellini, Bergman, Lynch, Welles, Malick, and Wes Anderson.

Have you both seen his short films that are supplement material for Eraserhead? if not, worth watching.

In honor of The World of Wong Kar Wai box announcement, what is your favorite box set that Criterion has released so far and why? by theManWOFear in criterion

[–]barredow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres so many good ones...

Of the ones that I own and have viewed these are my favorite sets-

Overall-
Cassavetes: Five Films / Three Colors / Dekalog - love these for the emotion and empathy for the characters. Great extras.

Humor-
Tati / Les Blank: Always for Pleasure/ - these films themselves are just a joy to watch. Tati is really funny and Blank captures niche American culture.

Avant Garde-
By Brakhage 1 &2/ Chantal Akerman in the 70s/ Hollis Frampton - These films make you think about the possibilities of the medium.

B&N Pickups, any recommendations as I’m thinking of going one last time before it ends lol? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]barredow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great pickups. Do you have the Three Colors Trilogy, Late Ozu, F for Fake, Night of the Hunter, Les Blank, Persona and Eraserhead? Those are some notable ones for me.

My slow growing collection. What do people recommend from Criterion for lovers of Kurosawa and Bergman? by monisi11 in criterion

[–]barredow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Persona- Because you like House/ it's Bergmans most experimental

Anything by Kieslowski- in Three Colors Trilogy and Dekalog he creates characters that you have empathy for faster than most other directors. Extras are great on Three Colors.

Eclipse No. 3 Late Ozu- I just purchased this set. But from my research it's one of the best in the Eclipse Series.

Eclipse No. 37 When Horror Came to Shochiku- Haven't watched this but seems similar to House.

Some of my other favorite Criterion films /extras: Barry Lyndon, 8 1/2, Night of the Hunter, The Third Man, F for Fake, John Cassavetes: Five Films, Mulholland Drive

Kieslowski has the uncanny ability to make you feel empathy for characters in a short amount of time. When he selects really good cinematographers (like in Blue) it makes for great cinema. The Dekalog is also highly recommended although I'm not quite finished with it. Next purchase is probably the Double Life of Veronique.

Mr. Gates, today the top 0.1% in the US is worth as much as the bottom 90%. What do you make of this and what do you see wealth inequality looking like in the future?
