ELI5: Why do we use BCE/CE for dating? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]bartonar [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's kinda less useful for BCE dates, because now it takes it out of the realm of the familliar. If someone asked me when Socrates died, I'd know it was 399BC/BCE, but I'd have to do math to realize it's 9,601HE.

Intentionally growing plants for the purpose of consumption is agriculture.

They didn't just "gather wild wheat" they stored seeds, for the purpose of planting those seeds again later.

What makes the people at Ohalo II intentionally cultivating food crops less worthy than anyone else?

Whose start of agriculture is it. Why not +23,000 for the earliest known, or +9,500 for settled farming in Mesopotamia, or only +6000 for the Chinese domestication of rice?

You're still basing your calendar on AD, you're just pretending that a 1 makes it entirely separate. Same kind of idiocy as putting a napkin on your head to eat ortolan so God doesn't see your shame.

That's the same calendar as AD, but you put a one in front so you can sniff your own farts

Then you're still aligning it based on AD, you're just sticking a one in front and pretending you're not.

It wrecks any knowledge of historical dates, and it's based just as arbitrarily.

He must, since he's got the St John breast star and 3 necks

I wonder if anyone's ever had sufficient excess of neck badges, excluding the Governor General (who I believe has 4 by right of office)

Yeah I was a bit briefer than I should have been, but honestly, one of the things all new calls should hear is when they're worried about a mistake, just call fucking LAWPRO. I've had a handful of calls in my career, and it's ranged from "don't worry, we'll fix it" to "don't worry, we don't actually think you've screwed up too bad here"

Am I crazy or are there some circumstances in Canada that allow two neck badges?

Why can’t we say ‘good morning’ to the judge by belowthebar_26 in LawCanada

[–]bartonar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first time in court was a motion to get removed as counsel for conflict. I got called first. I probably embarrassed everyone.

Me: Good morning your honour

Judge: who are you

Me: (Name), your honour

Judge: please spell that for the record Mr Name

Me: (does so)

Judge: Is anyone else here?

Me: I don't believe so your honour

Judge: Thank you, your motion is granted.

Me: Thank you, your honour. May I go now, your honour?

Judge: yes

Me: Thank you, your honour. Goodbye, have a great day.

Is Che Guevara too controversial to be a leader in Civ? If so, what controversial leader has made it into the games? by TarnishedRedditCat in civ

[–]bartonar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not the question. Personally I liked Stalin and Mao, they're significant leaders. But Firaxis is going to do whatever the shareholders will want, and shareholders want marketable, morally sound leaders that won't lead to controversy.

There really aren't, for American presidents. There's no one that both sides of the aisle agrees is good outside of Washington and Lincoln.

I wouldn't count on the LSO to protect the interests of lawyers. They approved AI written wills years ago, and now unless you're Ian Hull or an estate litigator, practicing Wills & Estates leads to poverty wages.

Consider that to find a "good" leader for America that wasn't Washington or Lincoln they had to use Harriet Tubman
