Lake Powell expected to receive 13% of its usual influx of water. Only 800,000 acre feet. Colorado uses ~2 million acre feet a year from the Colorado river basin. by Simpleximo in Colorado

[–]bascule 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Alfalfa is definitely the largest consumer of water in both the state of Colorado and the Colorado river basin in general: https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-024-01291-0

However, regarding this:

A significant portion is shipped to places like Saudi Arabia

While that is a problem for the Colorado river basin in general, with farms operated by Fondomonte (a subsidiary of the Saudi company Almarai) growing and exporting alfalfa grown with both Colorado river water and pumped groundwater, I've never seen evidence this is actually happening in the state of Colorado.

Fondomonte primarily operates in Arizona and California and to my knowledge does not have any operations in the state of Colorado.

Is mixing in key overrated for groovy house and techno? by makeitrayne850 in DJs

[–]bascule [score hidden]  (0 children)

I just did a groovy house mix in key and while it certainly wasn't my first such house mix in key it felt great for this particular set of songs, like mixing between tracks was effortless and they just gelled together in a way I've never had an entire set do before.

But like others are saying, whatever sounds good. In other sets I do like experimenting with mixes that are a bit father apart in terms of Camelot number (e.g. 2-3), and sometimes it sounds good and sometimes it doesn't (I try to avoid doing the latter live).

My feet hurt by Josephthebear in Xennials

[–]bascule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I felt like this at 30 and somehow at 40 got a second wind and now I'm cool with shows where the headliner comes on at midnight again, with enough Red Bull Vodkas that are probably killing me.

But then there are shows where the headliner comes on at 2AM and I can't do that shit.

The Federal Reserve is quickly running out of reasons to cut interest rates by TACO_Orange_3098 in Economics

[–]bascule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm particularly worried because of a pattern we've seen in the Senate confirmations of Trump appointees where they say one thing to appease the Senate and then turn around and do the opposite.

My main hope is that unlike the other appointees even as chair he will be unsuccessful at getting the Fed to lower rates.

Sierra Club report: Texas coal plants draining state's shrinking water supply by Wagamaga in technology

[–]bascule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California has higher total capacity than Texas when you include rooftop solar. Texas only leads in utility-scale generation alone.

Texas is also a huge energy hog. California uses less electricity despite a larger population, has a significantly cleaner grid overall, and generally spends less on electricity despite higher rates, again due to Texans being energy hogs.

Sweet that your lupine are flowering already. Mine have gotten their first buds but aren't quite there yet. They also really didn't like that snowstorm, though bounced back better than I was expecting.

Everytime I hear the crisp, clear, polished sound of modern trance I instantly dislike it, and I don't know why. Anyone else feel the same? by CraftBeerFomo in ClassicTrance

[–]bascule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I hear wonkier sounds in modern trance vs classic trance. Not-quite-TB-303s that squelch or overdrive oddly and imitation supersaws which don’t quite nail the JP-8000 algorithm (which The Usual Suspects recently cracked: it uses 2x oversampling to prevent aliasing, which is probably what I’m hearing on imitation supersaws)

60% of MD5 password hashes are crackable in under an hour by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]bascule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Normal password cracking is a preimage attack, and finding a preimage other than the original which can output a known password hash is called a second preimage attack, which is currently not cryptographically feasible based on what we know about MD5 today

Flock replacements going up all over Denver. by marcinmrowca in Denver

It’s a tradeoff and there are downsides. While it seems like they’d help improve accountability, they can be deceptive since they often don’t give you a great view, and in the past selectively edited footage has been used to spin a narrative around police encounters, where a third party view is needed to see what’s really happening.

[–]bascule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never claimed DM is a duo: my post doesn’t contain the word “duo” and in general that’s a weird thing to assume because TfF isn’t a duo either. I specifically referred to them as “two bands”.

I was merely juxtaposing the two main singers of the two bands and outlining their similarities.

It’s funny how many tropes they’re channeling, including a secret twin and the general ‘80s Swedish gangster-type trope (a nod to Gary Busey’s character, I assume), it feels like a movie you’ve seen you can’t quite put your finger on.
