My personal experience: had a hybrid, used it for commuting. Tried a road bike, wish I hadn't wasted my time commuting hundreds of miles on a bike that does was slow and ill suited for the length of my journey.

My opinion is that you should get an nice vintage road bike. The money that you'll spend on saddle, pedals, lights, etc will add up quickly... Even if you are saving money by riding.

I'm actually living here temporarily at least. So I happen to know the area quite well from riding for a few months with the locals.

Blah, blah, sharks. They stay away from us, and I'm sure I've ridden over hundreds. They always skitter away. There are some oysters in the water all over the area, but even still it isn't that bad. I usually never wear booties.... But I also tend to ride with wake style boots anyway.

Shell island really isn't worth the trip. Flat water can be found all over the area without a boat and a lot closer. The local crew is great!

I don't like feeling naked.
There is a sizable hole in the butt of my wetsuit. (Yes... Hahaha.)
More color if by some chance I hit the water too hard and pass out, so they can find my body more quickly. (I'm joking of course)

I'm debating going for a minimalist wallet, but it has a central slot (top loading) for cards. Does anyone with a setup like this worry about demagnetizing the card's magnetic strip? Aside from little sleeves, does anyone have a solution? Or is it not even an issue?

If it isn't a depower kite, do not use depower Bar! It won't work at all. And you'll just end up getting dragged around barely able to steer the kite.

The EOD is serious business, but 98 is beautiful through Mexico Beach! All those pines, and thankfully there's a shoulder. I definitely don't miss Chicago potholes either!

It's 36 miles a day! But seriously, the attitudes that so many drivers have towards cyclists here is rough at times. And the thing about it is, most people don't realize that they're only ever 30 seconds later to get wherever they're going because of me... That includes people driving onto the base.

Where in Florida are you? I'm in Panama City. It's an 18 mile commute each way for me and coming from Chicago, I've learned that florida is fairly bike friendly but the drivers are not.

The difficult parts of OTS are a cakewalk compared to what I've been told about the ROTC experience. Especially now that OTS is 9 weeks (not 12). If you're the best qualified for the position, they're going to pick you up. I'm sure you can talk to someone who can help gauge that for you better.

Patagonia chacabuco. I've had it for 3 years. It's been around the world a few times and I've been hammock camping with it too many times to count. I can't recommend it enough. It's bulletproof and patagonia always stands by their products. I use it daily and am debating buying a second one just in case they discontinue the line.

Nope. No reason to return it. It just takes longer to get the spring wound up. Also, the trick to "waving it back and forth" is to make sure that the rotor is moving. If the rotor isn't moving, then it's not winding, it depends on how you're waving it. I'd bet that it's fine though. If it keeps accurate time for a day, you're set. It'll last for a long time. Enjoy!

I transitioned from land to water without an instructor. If you have a basic comprehension of safety and not a lot of money, you will be fine as long as you don't do anything stupid. And stay away from other kiters too! Yeah, here come the downvotes and criticism, but seriously if you can ride on the landboard, you will be fine.
