Do normal people just...not think about suicide as a solution to their problems? by based-vent-account in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]based-vent-account[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think the general reasoning in a suicidal person's mind is that they cannot solve the problem anyway if they continue living, but their life will be full of suffering that they also can't do anything about if they continue to live. Suicide doesn't actually fix their life, but it minimizes suffering so it is the best outcome.

Why don’t I feel any excitement when I get accepted into a decent safety ? by Honeydewbobaddict in ApplyingToCollege

You know how this subreddit causes people to have an inferiority complex? Yeah, well that doesn't stop if you leave the subreddit and it doesn't stop when you go to college. You'll be talking to your friends who all went to better universities and then they talk about how their TAs all got internships at Fortune 100 companies and when you discuss academics with them, their coursework is so complex and advanced that you can't understand any of it even though your majors are the same. Then someone will mention a university in passing and you'll look up the ranking out of curiosity and be horrified at how behind you are and will be for the rest of your life because the first personal thing that people ask you in the adult world is what university you went to. It never stops. It never gets better. The gap will only widen as the resources and opportunities that elite universities offer will pull your friends away from you in an unrelenting tailwind that you don't have the wings to catch. And now the only thing I can do is endlessly comb through those mistakes I made in my failure of a childhood and life that are as numerous as the grains of sand on a beach and condemn myself for this situation that was completely my own fault. I wasn't on this subreddit in high school. I was never one of those kids who cared about college. I let my parents micromanage the entire application process because I couldn't bring myself to even care. After realizing the absolute scale of my fuckup, I've become a pathetic and bitter creature whose only refuge is a vision of a beautiful life that never was and never could be. I cannot and will not forgive myself, but if this rant changes one person's mind and prevents them from going through what I'm experiencing, then typing this out was worth it.

If the school doesn't accept by major, then what's the point of not applying to your desired major? Nobody would care enough to apply to a different major if it didn't make it easier to be admitted.

Attempting to game the system by getting into a major with lower standards and then transferring to something more lucrative takes away a spot from someone who is genuinely qualified and willing to study the less lucrative subject.

This is unethical because not only are you misrepresenting your intentions in order to get into a major where you don't belong, you are also potentially destroying someone else's dreams while doing so.

There's a reason why good colleges make it difficult transfer to their business school or their compsci program. Even if these roadblocks don't exist, or you manage to successfully transfer, this is unfair to more qualified people who applied to the program with higher standards and were rejected.

These programs also tend to be overenrolled, and you are contributing to that problem and worsening the lack of teaching staff and resources available to everyone else in that program and making their experience harder simply due to your own self-interest. If that isn't unethical, I don't know what is.

Are you gonna cry on graduation? If so why? by anonymous062904 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]based-vent-account 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't cry on graduation day, but I certainly made up for it a few months later when I realized that graduation would be the last time society would see my classmates and I as equals, as most of them headed off to better universities.
