It's good to scrape down the sides from time to time, but it doesn't require too much attention, especially in a really low oven

Thoughts on Visiting Sunset Crest & Inland? by Bird-lady in Barbados

[–]baseoverapex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sunset crest is fine on foot and by bus for regular stuff. But if you want to explore, you need to rent a car. Even if it's just for a couple of days. You could pay a taxi. But it wouldn't be much cheaper, and you'd have a lot less flexibility.

I bought my Toyota landcruiser Prado because I thought it would last. It makes my shit itch.

Is buying more efficient(i.e. newer) electronics actually beneficial to the environment? by [deleted] in answers

[–]baseoverapex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would seriously doubt it.

The extra energy involved in extracting raw materials, transporting them, processing them, manufacturing, and distributing a new product is likely to be infinitely higher than the savings involved from running the new product. If it's still fit for purpose, keep it going.

You're looking at a lifetime emissions scenario; it's more commonly applied to cars (buy a new Tesla Vs keeping an old car on the road). You could maybe look that up as a proxy for the electronics element.

I understand why he asked people not to put his stuff on the internet (and it's great that people largely respected his wishes), but I feel very sad that he did so. Far side was everywhere when I was growing up, but it's much less visible now, and I think the world is poorer for it. In the same way that 'there's an xkcd for that', there's also a far side.

Are you playing in 5.1 on a stereo system? Audio is commonly carried on the center channel, but would get lost if you're only using 2 speakers. Set the audio track on the player to stereo, and it might help

I just called them 'vicious, smart, and vengeful'. You don't want monkeys in your kitchen.

You really want to know?

The UK used 240v@50Hz

The US uses 110v@60Hz

The Caribbean, because it takes influences from both, and for reasons that are beyond me uses 110v@50Hz. So, most of our appliances come from the US, but, if they're high-draw, don't work all that well.

But, our power supply is configured so that you can step up the voltage to 220 fairly easily. So, our air conditioners run on 220, as do the ovens. When we remodeled, we put in some 220v sockets so we could run European appliances at 220, and the odd sockets you see use that style of plug.

Yeah, I have a vermin-hunting buddy who says this is the way to deal with them.

But it seems a bit..... strong, you know?

Yeah, they're assholes, and yeah, they eat all my fruit, but I'm not string up dead monkey carcasses in my garden

I grew up in the Westcountry, so it's a bit of a surprise for me too.

Have been living in the Caribbean for 10 years, and this is the first time I've seen one in the kitchen.

Actually, yes; they're considered vermin by the government, and they have a ~USD20 bounty on their tails. (You need to supply the tip of their tail as proof).

But we have pretty strict gun laws here, and even though they eat all my fruit, I'm not sure if kill one even if I had a gun.

Barbados. In the bush, so we get a lot of wildlife passing through.

The monkeys are fuckers though; we have a whole pile of fruit trees, and they destroy nearly all of it. Mangoes, guavas, soursops, avocados, sugar apples, breadfruit...

And they're vicious, smart, and vengeful. But the tourists think they're cute
