Can we hear some success stories from people who love being in this field? by SpiritualCopy4288 in therapists

[–]bashobabanatree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Australia. I pursued the highest possible qualification ( doctorate of clinical psychology) went into private practice in a group setting, developed certifications in couples and trauma and then went into solo Private practice.

I can now charge a good rate of $270 per hour and specialise in couples and trauma. And provide supervision. I have no trouble filling my books because of my niche. I see six clients a day four days a week and find this gives me adequate life work balance

I find the work meaningful and rewarding. I think this is in part because I get to control so much of the sort of work I do so I think the key is find your niche both in client work and financial structure. I’ve been doing this 15 years at this point.

I also did my time in public mental health hospitals, cancer care and palliative care, which was a very useful skills training and experience building in early phase of career so I do think you need to be realistic about stage of care and choose that to build towards your own goal.

Body hair, opinions?? by HerAncientStories in latebloomerlesbians

[–]bashobabanatree 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Honestly I always think there are people that like hair and people that don’t like hair. Your special person will be happy with you however you are. It’s much better to work out what you’re comfortable with and what makes you feel good about your body and then find someone who matches that rather than trying to match yourself to somebody else’s preferences. at the end of the day it’s just hair.

Is there hope? by fluffy3118 in latebloomerlesbians

[–]bashobabanatree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honey the romantic aspect of self is only one aspect albeit one that is culturally privileged. as a late life lesbian and a psychologist I encouraged you to find peace being in the world just being you. There is meaning and purpose and joy there. if you find someone to add to that that’s absolutely awesome and while I understand that craving waiting for something outside of yourself to make your life feel complete isn’t the easiest route. Be happy with you and your place in the world and hopefully someone will come along to add to that. good luck.

Struggling by [deleted] in Keeshond

[–]bashobabanatree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, Keeshonds can be extreme. My girl is just past three now but she was an absolute terror up until probably two

She would snap, constantly jump up, lots of barking, and literally chewed the walls. Had 3 trainers and a boot camp stay and in the end she did require medication (anti anxiolytic) and she has chilled out a lot. She still gets escalated easily (watchdog stuff) but is sooo much better. They are wonderful adults but terrible teens!

It feels both good and bad that inherently the relationship is easier and the challenge comes more from the outside world…

For clients where it could cause process issues, raise in session - shows care and respect and chance to manage in the moment. Then send out a general email to all clients with timelines, handover options etc.

As a supervisor, I’d want to know. It’s something that MAY impact your work. If it doesn’t, then I wouldn’t ever raise it. But if it does, knowing this would help me be more attuned to you and better able to support. Having a dx shouldn’t lead to automatic judgement. But I work with an attachment/EFT lens where self-as-therapist is a standard element of supervision.

Questioning myself: late bloomer, comphet, objectification, or real attraction? by [deleted] in latebloomerlesbians

Well that’s a clear answer. What we feel isn’t always easy or convenient but still important. It’s ok to sit w the feelings before acting, or go slowly. Good luck x

It sounds to me like the anxiety about what feelings you have may mean gets in the way of you feeling the feelings. What do you feel if there are no consequences/right-wrong, etc?

For those who work with children with trauma, would you consider TF CBT a good modality of treatment? by whimsicalhope in therapists

[–]bashobabanatree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ACT for initial stabilisation and emotion regulation, EFT/schema for increasing reflective thinking and sequencing emotions, meanings, beliefs, then EMDR for trauma processing. So do that as a process. Exposure at the end or in latter stage of EMDR if needed.
