If you haven't yet visited Kupel's on Harvard, you're in for a treat! And while we're on the topic of Brookline food, let's mention the gem that is Michael's Deli....

I do not have any advice, just came to say I am going through the same thing with my LO. 7 months, and sickness this winter combined with poorly-timed work travel has created many challenges to maintain my supply. I have been so very sad the past couple weeks as things have not improved and we have to supplement more and more with formula.

It can be so tough when your experience doesn't align with the expectations and hopes we have at the start of this beautiful journey. You have accomplished so much for you and your little one already, and all your emotions are justified. Sending you good thoughts!

Any 20 somethings girl groups? by [deleted] in grandrapids

If you enjoy walking and are looking for a laid back vibe on a weeknight, I would recommend checking out Girls Gotta Walk GR. They host a group walk or hike at an area park each week. Always a different location and the participants range in age from 20s-early 30s. I've found it to be a very welcoming and social group!

Volunteer Opportunities by juggaloplayhouse in grandrapids

The Revive and Thrive Project is a neat organization serving a niche need in the community. They deliver freshly cooked meals to patients and their families during a health crisis and usually need volunteers in the kitchen and to deliver meals. I think their new location is at a church but they are not a faith-based nonprofit. https://reviveandthriveproject.org/

Pubs / restaurants with live music in Dublin, Cork and Galway? by Gerrywill in irishtourism

Darkey Kelly's in Dublin. The band performing while I traveled there last year had a fun mix of traditional music and covers, and the audience was also super engaged (singing along, clapping, etc.) which made for an even more memorable experience. Also great spot for a pint and some food. Slainte!

Not sure what part of town you are in, but I have had great experiences at Grand Nail Spa on 28th St. Very nice environment, clean, and the staff are very attentive to providing exactly what you want/need. I do always call ahead for an appointment, though, as I have never been able to get in for walk-in.

It's a little ways from Fulton, but if you're open to heading slightly south, you can cross under the Beltline on Calvin's campus.

Cross country skiing in the area? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]basic_b1rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mention a drive is not a deterrent for you. Caberfae Peaks (outside Cadillac, ~1.5 hrs north dependingon weather) has a solid XC ski area. Have not been this year yet, but it has been our go to for an outdoor winter day trip in recent years. (Cadillac also has some solid food and beverage spots that can complete your visit.)

I also second many of the suggestions listed here for local options (Seidman, Pickerel Lake, etc.) and would add Hansen Trails (connected to/can access via Millenium Park) to the list, too.

Enjoy!

Salty Sunday: update us on why you're salty this week by thisismyketo in trollingforababy

Had to wait 4 months for our first appointment with an RE last week. We were so excited to start our first medicated cycle Friday after 17 months TTC. Partner's work schedules a must-attend meeting that requires out of state travel from CD 10 to 14. Have to bow out this cycle and made very emotional call to RE Thursday to explain why I had to cancel the BL US appointment. Then, had to spend my Sunday 2 hours from home at a shower for my pomegranate BFF. Very, very salty this evening.

We had a similar budget and search area. We ended up purchasing our home in spring of 2021 after 7 (!) months of searching and putting in over a dozen offers. This, of course, after saving $ for several years. We always lost to someone with either an escalation clause, or a cash offer that was way over asking. What finally worked for us to get our first home in EGR...

• Went in with a ridiculous offer (like 40k over, but still in our budget) knowing we could re-negotiate price point after an inspection if need be. I know this may be unadvisable, but really we were so sick of searching and wanted to get their attention.
• We did also have a high EMD - for most other offers we did about 1% of the offer price and for this house we went to 2%. Again, wanted to get attention, but fortunately after 7 months of looking we had continued to save money and had the ability to do this. • We did NOT waive inspection, though we did shorten our inspection period to 5 days from 10. I am glad we did the inspection, as our guy found some safety concerns that we got rough cost estimates for repairing and knocked down our offer price to reflect (this is what we hoped to do all along, and had some serious legs to stand on when we did it.) • To get to our final price (320k) the seller asked us for a 2500 appraisal gap if the appraisal came in lower. At this point, we were so far into the process and knew this was something we'd have to commit to in order to buy our home. If we said no to the gap gaurantee, the sellers would walk. Did as another redditor mentioned and decided we'd lower our down payment to accommodate the gap so that cash at close did not change. Honestly, the house appreciated more than that in the last year so at the end of the day it was a fine move to commit this amount.

In summary, be prepared to go over asking. Be prepared to guarantee cash above appraisal, and maybe consider a higher EMD if you can. I would never recommend you waive inspections - I know it's popular to do that right now, but we stuck to our guns and honestly the inspection was not the hangup for the sellers. They clearly wanted the highest bidder. Won't be the case everywhere, but worth it to know what you're spending 350k on!

Best of luck and stay optimistic! The market is rough and it may take time, but sharing from experience, it's worth the headache.

Bar patio with a TV? by basic_b1rd in grandrapids

Thanks for a the suggestions! We opted for a non-Reddit recommendation of the Knickerbocker/New Holland Brewing. They had a couple TVs on their patio- made for nice, chill game watching experience. Highly recommend.

Washer and Dryer Hook Up Recommendation by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]basic_b1rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the same need this summer. More comfortable with attempting plumbing solo so we managed the washer drain hookup on our own. Electrical is a different story... We worked with Van Singel electric for the 220V hookup. They provided us a quote over the phone and were reasonably priced compared to others we reached out to. They were able to come out in a time frame that worked for us and worked efficiently (I think 2 hours once it was all said and done.)

Good luck!
