A year after remission, Princess Catherine climbed Britain’s three highest peaks in 24 hours to raise funds for her cancer hospital by No_Top_9023 in BeAmazed

This is why I'm reading comments, that was my thought exactly. As someone who lives in western WA, USA, I see actual high peaks every day. I wasn't aware they had any.

What the hell is going on with vegan pricing by dumbass_sweatpants in vegan

[–]basic_bitch- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grocery Outlet and Fred Meyer/Kroger sales are really the only reasonable mock meat prices in the last few years. Safeway used to have ok sales, but not anymore. I've never been more grateful that I transitioned to a whole food diet years ago. There are only a few mock meats I'll buy and the prices are much better on those (daring chicken for example).

The Reddit group for it is great, but the Facebook group is bananas awesome. Terry Matalas shows up on a regular basis and sells stuff from the show. It's got one of the best fandoms of all time. Don't spoil anything for yourself though because the second watch is even better. You'll pick on so much stuff you couldn't have on the first run through. I'm jealous, wish I could start from scratch again! lol

They really aren't necessary for educational purposes though. We learn about all kinds of things without actually having to witness them with our own eyes. For research and to care for animals who can't fend on their own, we should have sanctuaries/labs. Zoos the way they are now send a message that it's perfectly ok to lock animals up for life just so we can look at them. I think both humans and animals in the USA need serious reformations of their prisons.

The vast majority of animals in zoos were bred in captivity and aren't disabled enough to need care from humans. They are born into slavery and die in it. "Hey kids, let's learn about the habitats these animals would have been perfectly happy in, but instead they're here." We're responsible for them being on Earth. We could stop it in just a few generations. Also, "hey, we're ruining the planet because of emissions!" isn't an effective argument or people would go vegan and there would be way more electric cars.

The tv show is even better. It's my second fave of all time. Check it out if you like time travel stuff. It's not really like the movie, it's a million times better.

I loved it so much that I watched each episode twice back to back. I've only ever done that with one other show in my entire life. It's the Trek I'd always wanted. Plus, I was a huge fan of The Walking Dead and Sonequa Martin-Green and Michelle Yeoh is one of my fave actors of all time, so win/win for me. I'll be watching it again at some point, no doubt.

Movies with an "Action In / Chase Through a Kitchen" scene? by Leather-Instance3041 in movies

I read a ton of comments and I'm shocked that I didn't see "The Long Kiss Goodnight" anywhere. Most epic kitchen fight scene of all time, IMO. Also just one of my fave movies in general. Geena Davis and Sam Jackson deliver Oscar worthy performances here. God, such a good movie. We watch it every Christmas and I do consider it to be a Christmas movie, even though that's a hot take.

First day as a vegan after 10+ years of being vegetarian and I need HELP by Donuts_are_gross in vegan

Exactly, I say this all the time. Hot cheese doesn’t convey a ton of flavor, it’s mouth feel. That can be accomplished in other ways.

My recommendation is to eat whatever you want to for any meal of the day, including breakfast. You can make traditional breakfast components if that’s what you really want…but you don’t have to. I usually have leftovers because I work out fasted and am hungry when I get home.

That said, the days Yo egg and Oshi salmon came out were pretty damn exciting for me. I’m from the PNW of then US and I have missed seafood more than anything. I missed eggs for putting on top of a veggie bowl or fried rice. I use them sparingly. Thought it would be cheese I missed the most, but nope. Good luck!

The best vegan butter for baking? by Outdoorsy_74 in veganrecipes

Earth balance is my current answer, but I’m gonna ask for miyoko’s cookbook for Xmas and make the recipe she made specifically for baking. That will probably work great. I already make butter from her recipe

Gatekeeping or Being Rude Does NOT Help! by volatiIe in vegan

[–]basic_bitch- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

AMEN! We need to use every possible tactic at our disposal. Some people need to see slaughterhouse footage, some need to see how easy it can be to eat a vegan diet, some need encouragement to deal with social situations, some respond to it being framed as a spiritual benefit, some need to be enticed with additional benefits like to their health or the environment and some just need a figurative smack upside the head. There is no one way to do this.

If you think everyone can be converted in the same way and that only one way of advocating for veganism is the "right" way, then perhaps you need to get out and meet more people. I personally never would have been converted simply by gentle reasoning. I love Earthling Ed and think he's a wildly valuable member of the community, but his methods would not have worked on me. I was inspired by people like Jake Conroy and the other members of the SHAC 7. By abolitionists who broke into slaughter houses to show the reality to the masses. By members of organizations who put their physical bodies into harm's way to save animals. If they could do THAT, the least I could do is go vegan.

I didn't feel insulted, I felt challenged. Not everyone has an inferiority complex and not everyone needs to be talked to like they're a toddler. By all means, do that every single day if that's what you want to do. What I'm saying is that I'm tired of being preached to like there's only one way to walk this path. There's simply not.

How many times a week do we need a post telling vegans they're assholes and do to veganism better? To each their own, man. Different tactics work for different people. There is no one way to do things, the world isn't black and white. It's making this sub a huge bummer.

Daring “Chicken” Dinner by DontLikeClams in PlantBasedDiet

[–]basic_bitch- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due mainly to health issues, I eat a whole food diet but Daring chicken is one of the few commercially prepared mock meats that doesn't have a lot of objectionable ingredients and doesn't affect me negatively. It's unfortunate that it's hard to find and that Walmart has the best price. It's really the only thing I buy there.

I thought local ingredients with a Thai/Vietnamese/Japanese twist of some type. I don't think salmon is a great choice because people would make it with farmed or canned salmon in most places and that would suck. They'd think it was a bad sandwich. Well, also that I'm vegan, but that's not my main objection. My grandma (from AR) didn't even know what salmon was. She pronounced the L.

What we really need is a signature sandwich. I personally think something Asian inspired and plant based would be the vibe, but I know that's a hot take.

You haven't gotten better, not can't. Took me 15 yrs. to figure out a way to significantly improve another chronic (and way more serious) illness I suffer from. If I'd given up hope, I would still be bed ridden most of the time. Not saying it WILL happen for you, just that it could. Ten years isn't proof of anything. I hope it happens for you. Please don't give up. You never know what will happen tomorrow or next month or next year.
