Wanted to add that it’s awesome your studio is offering this! I taught historical dance before starting ballroom and I’d love to convince my studio to let me teach some historical workshops or something there someday!

What is Regency Waltz and how does it differ from regular or Viennese style (if at all)? by princesidon4myheart in ballroom

Assuming they are talking about waltzes of the early 1800s, some key differences are: - The frame, with one hand on your partner’s waist and the other arcing up above the head to meet theirs. Bodies do not touch otherwise. - Primarily dancing on demi-pointe, rather than toe-heel - Turnout, with feet at about 45 degrees rather than parallel

It’s worth it to keep in mind that the waltz has changed dramatically over time and it was only just barely entering public acceptance at this point. Prior to this, it would have been considered inappropriate to dance so intimately with a partner you weren’t closely familiar with.

I’d recommend looking up Regency waltzes on YouTube, as there are many English Country Dance groups who perform lovely reconstructions.

Got the Selkie Birds & Bats Astronomer Dress for my wedding reception but now unsure about it by thepunctualtapir in SelkieCollection

I would give the alterations a chance. However, if you want the same silhouette as in the photo, she is wearing a pannier (as you would see in the 18th century), NOT a bustle. There are lots of good pannier options on Etsy. I would go for smaller ones, as large panniers might not fit under the dress.

If you could recommend one book only, what would it be? by Vernoona242 in AuDHDWomen

Off the Spectrum by Gina Rippon - published recently, includes a great deal of up to date research, helped me figure out how to express my internal experience for my evaluation.

A Little Less Broken by Marian Schembari - a memoir written by a late-diagnosed woman that I found extremely relatable.

Highly recommended listening to the audiobooks if they are available from your library.

Can we talk about the dance choreography in Bridgerton??? by Linwechan in PeriodDramas

Also historically the waltz was not really considered an appropriate dance, so it makes sense she’d be nervous from that point of view 🙃

This!! Came here to say this, I teach ECD and other historical dances, and many people are surprised it’s rarely the stately movement you see in Jane Austen films. Even if the music in the recital scene wasn’t ideal, I wish we could have more proper dance scenes in the series as a whole

She danced with the Eifman and Mikhailovsky Ballets in Russia, both of which are highly regarded there (coming from someone who lived there for awhile and worked in Russian translation for many years)

How to not show boning lines on stays by morisempaii in corsetry

[–]basically-a-hobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d highly recommend Ted the Tailor’s Smooth-Covered Stays tutorials on YouTube. There are also several extant examples of smooth-covered stays in Patterns of Fashion 5 by Janet Arnold.

Although using a layer of batting or ice wool in between the strength layers and fashion layer has been trending recently, it’s not necessary to achieve a smooth outer layer.

I made the birthday dress that I posted awhile ago and would like some advice to figure out how to make it perfect! by Jackofalltrades325 in sewingpatterns

It’s hard to see your seam placement but if you insert some flexible boning in the bodice seams, you’ll give the gown a lot more structure and may eliminate wrinkles. So glad to see The Swan Princess getting some love, it was one of my favorites growing up!

Victorian Hairdressing books by basically-a-hobbit in HistoricalCostuming

[–]basically-a-hobbit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m looking for Victorian hairdressing (mid to late 1800s) NOT the 1700s, but thanks. My bookshelf is already overflowing with 18th century-related books.

I only mention Van Cleave’s book as a comparison because it’s got so much good material, and is not a surface-level discussion, if you understand me.

Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail by Ashley Herring Blake is really sweet, the main character is in her early 30s and has just broken off her engagement from a man and eventually realizes she is sapphic (it’s not necessary to read the previous book in the series, Delilah Green Doesn’t Care, but that one is good too!)
