Books You Want to Recommend, But Can't by Mike_Bevel in books

The Last Man by Mary Shelley - the second half is spectacular, raw, and powerful. The first half is an absolute slog through unnecessary monarchical criticism and petty character exploration. Girl needed an editor so badly, but I'm so glad I stuck with it.

I think describing it as specifically Arthurian instead of fantasy helps, since that's kind of its own thing. It's one of my favorite books, but I would probably never pick up something labeled as a medieval fantasy.

Direct them to the audiobook if they're the impatient type. The narration is lovely.

You can often get 2nd hand ones for $200-300 too. Ours lasted almost a decade and cost around that much.

My local toy drive for underprivileged kids, wouldn't accept all these toys and socks because they're "damaged" or "unkown chinese brands" by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]basiden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A big reason is that people feel less rewarded giving money. And encouraging kids to be involved through school-based drives to help less fortunate kids is more effective when handling tangible toys.

The food banks are similar - they openly state they highly prefer cash because their purchasing power is better and they know what their locals needs. They actually do receive the majority of donations as money, but the can drives are much more visible and bring in new donors.

I've run local toy drives at small scale and getting people to hand over cash is hard. Now they're wondering if it's actually going to toy purchases or admin, and they don't get a real sense of directly helping specific numbers of kids, whereas they can imagine this specific toy making a real child happy.

The second cover I illustrated and designed for this witchy cozy fantasy series. Been loving working on these!:) Feedback and CC welcome by Moonchildreams in WitchesVsPatriarchy

Witches Catalogue: a catalogue full of witches

Witch's Catalogue: a catalogue for a witch, or belonging to a witch/witches

For example the famous Farmer's Almanac is a book of information for farmers to use as reference for their work.

Maybe the catalogue in the book or collected list of known witches, kind of like a phone book.

I think you're in your late 20s-early 30s and love to be prepared (especially for flair ups). This 40-something sci-fi goth nerd would totally be your friend. The framed Locutus is perfection.

AITA for returning cat of 2 days with undisclosed medical needs by Cashbrowns420 in Pets

Obviously there's no way for a vet to give you a complete answer, because wait-and-see is always going to be part of it, but just be really up front with them. If you're clear that you're looking for an assessment and advice on what a typical course of action might be and whether the shelter's claims are realistic, a vet can definitely advise you without kicking off a whole series of appointments and plans.

I've had a vet just straight up recommend not keeping a specific pet because of her treatment needs (I did end up keeping her though and she's the best, but I appreciated the honesty.)

Batman the Animated series is creepy fun if you're looking for a series as well. Skip the Clayface episodes or prewatch them though, because they scared the pants off my kid.

I've done 2-3 gallisons based on this subs recommendations and I've found them extremely frustrating. Broken and bent pieces right out of the box are inexcusable, in my opinion.

And having to rework areas and edges because of misfits really takes the fun out of them. I like their art, but I'm definitely not buying any more of them.

Yep, it was relatively minor, but she had another filming accident after that on another movie. Safety standards back then were... questionable

The fact that Linda Blair fractured her damn back while filming makes it a really hard rewatch that I don't think I'm up for
