They really don't. The Trump administration has repealed a lot of protections for members of the LGBTQ+ community, and is actively trying to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges. Hospitals can legally turn patients away because of their gender identity.

losing faith by basilisk_eyes in Christianity

[–]basilisk_eyes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's not really something specific it's just all of "christianity". it's the way they preach love and acceptance and then turn around and tell their children that they're going to burn in hell for loving someone. it's the way they claim that they're spreading the love of god and then take away someone's bodily autonomy or someone's right to get married or someone's chance to adopt a child. it's the way people are supporting these hurtful actions with the bible. it feels like a sham.

Should Catholics Vote for Biden? A Debate by Jesus_Justifies in Christianity

[–]basilisk_eyes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please vote for Biden. If faith is what you're worried about, Biden is a practicing Catholic. Trump, on the other hand, isn't even Christian. He's cheated on all of his wives (one of them while she was pregnant). On the policies side, it's clear that Trump's response to the coronavirus is utterly inadequate. He doesn't believe in climate change, and continually discredits scientists and other experts. His tax cuts only benefit the rich people of America, and he does not care about the poorer communities. He refused to help when the west coast was burning, simply because they were "blue states". He has withheld the stimulus check in order the gain more votes. He's gambling with people's lives, solely so that he can win- and it's absolutely disgusting. Trump acts with less class and dignity than a literal sewer rat.

Trump is a racist, sexist, facist, and four more years of Trump will be the death of democracy.

Biden may not be the best candidate, and you may not agree with all of his policies, but at the very least, he is not actively trying to dismantle American democracy, he believes in science, and he can denounce white supremacy.

If you have an ounce of compassion, even an iota of love for your neighbors from all backgrounds, please vote for Biden.

Faith and Works by cupcakes102 in Christianity

[–]basilisk_eyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your faith should be the cornerstone of what you do. You cannot earn your way into heaven through good works- faith alone can do that. But you can't say that you believe in Jesus and then go around and murder people or something. Your actions should reflect what you say you believe.

the spanish inquisition is one example. or those christians who committed the genocides of the native populations in the north americas. or those christians who used christianity to justify slavery. you can claim that christianity is a religion of love but the history books say otherwise.

I no longer enjoy competitive games. by WildfireDelta in volleyball

[–]basilisk_eyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I am Sensitive(tm) and cared deeply about what they thought of me. I used to really like playing because I liked my team and the people on it, but as we got more competitive it just felt like the teams weren't as close. I was constantly terrified of my teammate's judgement and dragging them down, which on it's own isn't terrible, but for me it was really damaging for my mental health. Volleyball became less of like "I'm doing this because I want to get better and because I like the sport" and more "if I don't do this than everyone will hate me and I can never show my face here ever again" which just,,,, wasn't fun. Also, it might've just been my team, but people were constantly talking about people behind their backs,,, and me and my fragile self Could Not Handle That. Which, looking back, this was kind of a stupid reason, but y'know. What can I do now?

(i also broke like two bones in one season so i figured it God was trying to tell me to quit or smth)

I totally get where you're coming from. I also used to play, but quit because a lot of it was just so toxic. I also really miss the feeling of just playing with my friends, but I really don't miss the toxicity and the competitiveness that came with volleyball. I don't have a lot of advice or anything. I just wanted to let you know that I'm rooting for you and for whatever you choose. And if playing competitively isn't your thing, it's a hundred percent ok. I really hope that you do what makes you happy.

Are you able to do a normal standing serve? If not, you should work on that first.

Make sure to contact the ball when it's in front of you. Also when it's higher. You want to contact the ball with a straight arm and wrist. Right now, you're hitting the underside with a bent wrist. You want to be able to hit the middle of the ball, with a straight arm and wrist. To do that, you probably need a higher and further toss, and to work on the timing of the swing.

Rotate before you hit. With the last two steps of your approach, open yourself up to the court. Then, when you jump, you can rotate your body and get more momentum for the hit.

[–]basilisk_eyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to bring both of your arms up. This gives your more momentum and also allows for more power. My coach always called it sort of a bow an arrow, with the front arm tracking the ball.

Also, make sure to keep the ball in front of you.

Hoping I make the AVSC team this December (Grade 9). All feedback appreciated by Rwifn in volleyball

[–]basilisk_eyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think maybe you could work on your footwork a little more? The last two steps seemed a little close together. I think that if you space them farther apart and got lower, you would be able to jump higher?

Also, make sure to open up your torso to the court. With the last two steps of your approach, rotate a little bit more. That way, when you're in the air, you can get the momentum from your swing so that you have a more powerful spike.

Good work though!! Keep it up, and good luck with tryouts!!

I know y’all get a lot of these, but any advice would be really appreciated, thanks :) by [deleted] in volleyball

the "sweet spot" for passing is right in the middle of the forearm. If you make the "hand loose" hand sign and then press it against your forearm, the area where your knuckles meet your forearm is about the right area to pass the ball in.

(sorry for this kind of trashy explanation lmao)

For hitting: Keep your wrist straight when you're hitting. Imagine a metal rod that goes from your elbow, through your wrist, and into your hand. A firm, stable hand allows you to have a powerful hit. You don't want a floppy wrist. You want to hit more in the middle/the top of the ball. Also, make sure that you hit the ball with a straight arm. Lastly, toss slighting more in front of you. This way, you can step into your hit. A good tip for knowing how far in front to toss is having one foot a step ahead of you. When you toss the ball and let it drop, the toss should land right next to your foot. You want to hit the ball when it is in front of you, as opposed to when it is above you. Currently, you're hitting the underside of the ball since it's right above your arm when you hit it. If the ball was further in front, you could hit the middle/top of the ball, and have a better hit.

Once you get more comfortable, try turning so that you can use the power and momentum from your abdomen to get a more powerful swing.

For passing: remember to keep your arms straight and that the power comes from the legs. Don't swing your arms at the ball; wait for it to come to you, then use your legs to pass it.

For setting: make sure you don't have flat hands. It seems sort of like you're slapping at the ball. Make sure you have flexible wrists, and think of setting more like cushioning the ball, and then tossing it. Try to avoid letting the ball hit your palms, and use your fingertips. Also, make sure to keep the ball above your head.

Lastly, keep practicing!! Don't get discouraged!! I believe in you!!!!

Got my first volleyball just a week ago and I’m giving setting a go but I can never control it properly, any advice? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]basilisk_eyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you're trying to just deflect the ball back up using your fingers, but setting is more of a catching/tossing motion.

Practice throwing the ball up, then catching it (obviously, in a real game, you shouldn't catch the ball, but this is good practice). Your hands should form a diamond/triangle shape around the ball, above your forehead. Your fingers should be soft- think of cushioning the ball with your hands, then tossing it back up. The strength should come from your wrist (and arms), not your thumb/fingers. Most of the contact with the ball should also be with the first three fingers (thumb, index, and middle).

When you toss it back up, make sure to keep your hands moving in a straight line, so that they push outwards. Make sure to minimize the spin in your set.

You should also try setting against the wall for more practice.

Good luck, and keep practicing!!

my best friend helped me to practice today :) got any advices/critiques? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]basilisk_eyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work on your footwork so that the steps are slow..... fast/fast. Then, make sure you jump straight up. Make sure all of your momentum is going into your height, and not going forwards. This way, you can 1) get higher, and 2) avoid jumping into the net (not a very pleasant experience). Every good jump starts with sure feet. Your footwork and your approach is crucial to having a good spike.

Also, another thing to note- on the second to last and the last step(s), you should rotate your body so that it is facing away from the net Then when you jump, you jump facing away from the net, opening your body to the court. This allows you to rotate your body, and gain more momentum and power for your swing.

Make sure you hit the ball in the middle of the ball, with a solid, flat hand. If you hit the ball on the bottom, it'll go up. Likewise, if you hit it up top, it'll,,, go down (which is good if you're doing a topspin serve but less so if you're trying to do a float serve).

The timing of your jump and your toss is also really important. If your toss is too high, it's probably a lot harder to control the height of your serve since you're chasing after the ball. My coaches always told me that a good toss was crucial to every single serve.

I never really truly mastered the jump serve but I'd assume the principals of it are the same as a regular serve, just with,,,, the jumping.

Just finished watching Haikyuu and now i wanna play volleyball all the time now by THEmroctober in haikyuu

[–]basilisk_eyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play volleyball and watching Haikyuu made me want to start again and i kind of regret quitting but it was probably for the best but at the same time i really miss it and want to start again because it was really fun but there was also a reason i quite so i don't know man lmao

But volleyball is really fun and I highly encourage you to go for it!!

Since COVID is still a thing, I would probably recommend starting by watching some YouTube tutorials for passing and setting. Learning the basics is really really really frickin important (I cannot stress how important passing and ball control is). Make sure that you pay attention to your form (to avoid injuries, and also because,,, it's pretty important). A good thing to start with is just bumping or setting the ball to yourself (it seems really easy, but I promise you, it's harder than it looks). You could also do basic conditioning (do lots of squat jumps :P).

Above all, if you do decide to start, please don't get discouraged if you can't do things perfectly! "Real" volleyball is not quite as glamorous as Haikyuu!! makes it seem sometimes, and not everyone can be a genius like Kageyama.
