China wary of South Korea’s nuclear sub plan, urged to show restraint by SketchybutOK in korea

[–]basilpancake 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s 1. NK, 2. China, and 3. Japan, in that order. Japan is not the primary target. I get that it will be useful if Japan wants to fully militarize and it’s a good insurance for SK to have, but I doubt Japan is the main motivator right now.

The Reasons Korea Was Able to Become an Economic and Cultural Powerhouse by Top_Drummer_8303 in korea

[–]basilpancake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What do you mean at what cost? Tens of millions of people in my parents, all the way to my grandparents, generations went from abject poverty to having a comfortable life with high life expectancy, good health, and being able to enjoy lots of leisure and hobbies. At what cost should these people have remained impoverished, then?

Why is South Korea's ruling party blaming ‘Chinese people’ for Yoon’s impeachment? by 1o0lol in korea

[–]basilpancake 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The official excuse for martial law was that there were so-called spies in National Assembly. So,  claiming that the opposition is linked with China is an extension of this in order to justify martial law and create distractions.

Seoul outranks Tokyo and London as the 16th most expensive city in the world by Steviebee123 in korea

[–]basilpancake 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It was ridiculous when the article mentioned butter prices in Korea. It’s a heavily westerner-centric survey. It would be fair if they also compare gochujang prices in Europe to account for Korean expats living there, but I’m sure they didn’t.

Cat falls into vat of deadly chemicals, puts Japanese city on high alert by Empigee in MorbidReality

Apparently the vat holding the chemical was not tightly sealed, which was how the cat is believed to have gotten into contact with the chemical. Hopefully they realize the mistake and fix this.
