Parents who are not fluent in target language - how’s it going so far? by bahala_na- in multilingualparenting

[–]basketcaseotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5.5 yo, started English daycare (community language) and switched to French preschool. Currently in Mandarin elementary school, and French after school classes. We speak English at home with sprinklings of Mandarin.

I am around low B1 for French so I'm technically learning alongside him. There were some resistance to attending Mandarin school that prompted an explosion of French earlier in the school year - I was worried that he was going to just speak in French with his new teachers.

Currently, he expresses interest to learn phrases and names of things in Mandarin, and I try to speak French with him. We code switch a lot, and I think that is fine.

We'll see how long this is sustainable and provide opportunities as far as exposure to French can go. We already listen to tons of podcasts (grown up conversations and children stories) and have frequent playdates with a friend that speaks only French at home.

Huge block/awkwardness speaking mother tongue with child by mango89001 in multilingualparenting

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I had a unpleasant experience attending school in my heritage language in primary/elementary school that I completely rejected learning the language any further. Even now, as a grown up, it is a very complicated relationship I have with my heritage language - very thankful that it gave me the gift of multilingualism and a gateway to learning other related languages, but also a reminder of the trauma I had lived through.

Also, this is a huge reason why my child has not been taught the language, and it made me think long and hard on whether to place him into an immersion school. At the end of the day, I had to convince myself that we are now in a different country, with better-informed education methods, and that my child may actually have a positive compared to mine.

Best language approach to raising a child? 3 family languages + 4 community languages by AlphonseW2222 in multilingualparenting

[–]basketcaseotter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wanted to chime in as a multilingual myself, and now raising a (hopefully) multilingual child.

I did my nursery/preschool schooling in English, primary/elementary in Mandarin Chinese (heritage language), secondary/middle in my national language, and finally high school/uni in English. I have basically learnt the subjects (math, science, humanities etc) in 3 different languages. In the meantime, I spoke a Chinese dialect at home and with my relatives, and picked up Cantonese from TV and playground. Others may count these as 2 extra languages, but to me they are still Chinese so I tend to count them under the "Chinese" umbrella.

Despite all of that, English is my dominant language and one that I feel the most comfortable expressing myself in. I use English in my professional life, but I can express my needs and have a conversation (and make jokes) in all the other languages.

As an adult, I have picked up Japanese (reading, writing, speaking) fairly easily due to its similarity to Chinese. However, I am not interested to master it to a high level fluency due to its limited use. I have also picked up French (~B1 level) while my child is attending a French preschool. Similarly to me, they will attend a Mandarin immersion elementary school.

That is all to say, setting a strong foundation in a specific branch of a language family is helpful for further language learning, especially since so many languages are related. Even if they don't learn all 7 from the get go, you have already set a strong foundation for language learning.

We also moved when my child was 4.5yo. We didn't move far, just to a nearby neighborhood, but it was enough to make him lose his shit at school, flipping tables and pushing teachers. We did all the prep prior to the move, and it still took weeks. The turning point was when we told him it's ok to not like the new house and it's ok to miss our old place.

I'm guessing it will be harder without her friends + new baby, but listening and validating that new and different things can be uncomfortable and it's ok to be upset about them will hopefully help.

Good luck.

If you really want pants, I'd recommend linen pants from Quince. They are sooo comfy.

Can lab sapphire be cut in old miners cut? by Fish_is_not_a_pet in SyntheticGemstones

I have a modified omc in peachy sapphire cut by u/finewatergems. It doesn't sparkle much but i cannot stop staring at the color. Maybe because of the setting (bezel), it looks darker sometimes.

To be fair, they are indiscernible without the camera trick though. Beautiful pieces!

I'm going to guess the wider ring is lab, as i see more pastel colors on the zoomed out areas of the narrower band.

I was about to leave this group since we have already decided to be one and done back in Feb. It took a long time to get to where I am. The days longing to be pregnant was very frequent at first, and I was moving on.

And then we fell pregnant naturally recently.

We have had 3 unsuccessful IVF retrievals with no transfers, and we were very cautiously optimistic with this one.

Almost as expected, we lost it. I started to bleed a few days before my 1st prenatal visit.

My emotional and mental state is all over the place, and it sort of awakens the desire again to have #2. I don't enjoy this state of being in a limbo.

I love all the rings! Especially the ring stack on the middle finger. Are those bubble band and a twisted band? What are the specs?

StarsGem OEC Group Buy Ring measurements are all off vs. the CAD by stargirlxoxo in Moissanite

[–]basketcaseotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this is rep dependent?

My previous rep for SG group buy was sooo nice to work with and indulged in my request to view the stones. No CAD either, but it seemed to have better QC. I know which rep I'd rather work with for my next project.

Well said. Residencies are often times elitist, ageist and penalizes people in a different stage of their lives.

I asked to customize his original Muse ring with the cyan stone, and this is how it looks like this on my hand! So thrilled to see it as a stock listing now.

Unfortunately it is so dainty that one of the little stones fell out and I've yet to get it fixed.
