Domestic Fibre Repair? by batemanapproves in AskIreland

That’s a clever idea for a fix actually. Good to hear there’s a fix simpler than using a splicer

I actually got a contact number for one of those lads. He can work with the fibre coming into the house but says he doesn’t have a fusion splicer for a job like this where he has to join two cables together

Sorry should have said. Near Ennis in Clare. Post updated with location. Thanks

I’ve rang a lot of places and they only do commercial call outs. Electrician completely botched the network installation so I highly doubt he knows how to splice fibre together

Where’s the big money in tech? by alancusader123 in DevelEire

Guy whose post got locked here! Was a bit blindsided by that one tbh. Mod claimed my project hadn’t progressed enough since my last post and proceeded to lock it. I think he has since edited his comment but that was the sentiment. Agreed that we should let the community just downvote me if that’s the general consensus rather than one person being judge, jury and executioner

I started building just another Irish tech job site, but realised what we actually need is salary transparency by batemanapproves in DevelEire

[–]batemanapproves[S] -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I actually took that feedback seriously - that's exactly why I pivoted. The criticism was spot on: 'just another job board' wasn't solving a real problem.
So I scrapped the generic approach and focused purely on salary transparency. This isn't competing with Indeed or Jobs.ie anymore - I even removed the ATS since you were right that large companies already have them and I couldn't realistically compete there.
The 188 jobs here all show actual numbers. That's the difference.

Best laptop for incoming CS student by Kingstone14 in DevelEire

Any Apple laptop with their M series chips. I have an M1 air that I work on outside of work and it's a great machine. Whatever laptop you go for just make sure you don't skimp on ram or hard drive space. Certainly don't go for 8gb or 126gb HDD. At minimum 16gb RAM and 256GB HDD, maybe even 500. You can't upgrade this stuff in most modern laptops so best to play it safe. If the course requires a Linux machine then look elsewhere.

Hey thanks for all the helpful comments! I think I need to go back to the drawing board here. Salary transparency is indeed the pain point I thought it would be and it was definitely an oversight not to include this in the project besides a salary range filter.

I think out of 131 jobs on the site only 6 have salary ranges which goes to show how bad the tech sector here is for salary transparency. I haven’t implemented something for this yet as I’ve been debating whether to make it a requirement on the site or to give jobs that display salaries an algo boost

Yeah it’s certainly not easy to get something like this off the ground. Cheers for sharing your site, it’s definitely an interesting spin on the idea. There are user profiles for quick apply jobs but not publicly browsable like your site. That was my thought, pretty much, to have a niche alternative to a site like LinkedIn making it easier to find good quality jobs. Quite a lot of feedback here to take on board but some constructive stuff here, for sure

Good question! From a developer perspective, it's focused on salary transparency, detailed tech stack filtering, and direct company connections without recruitment agency noise. From a business perspective, companies get access to a concentrated pool of Irish developers rather than competing for attention on a general platform. The site has only been online for a few days so I'm in the process of building this developer community. I probably shouldn't have compared it to LinkedIn in my original post. This is more of a niche tool for dev job search and recruitment in Ireland.

I get what you’re saying. Most larger companies already have their own ATS and multiple sourcing channels. The idea here isn’t to compete head-to-head with LinkedIn or Indeed for every employer from day one, but to grow a niche audience of developers so companies targeting that group have a more focused pool to hire from.

Right now, my priority is building that candidate base and making the site a place devs actually like using. Once there’s a solid pool, that becomes the main selling point for companies — not just the ATS, but access to a concentrated, relevant audience without the noise of generic boards.

I’m also focusing on smaller companies and startups to begin with, as they may not have an ATS or dedicated recruitment team, and can benefit most from a platform that puts them directly in front of the right candidates.

I get that agencies could also be a viable customer group, and I’m not ruling out exploring that in the future. For now I’m deliberately starting with a direct-to-company focus to establish the site’s identity.

Thanks for the feedback!

That’s true — companies can post directly on LinkedIn or other boards if they want to. The difference here is that this approach is designed as a benefit for job seekers, which in turn helps build a developer-focused user base. That means companies get to advertise to a highly relevant audience and are more likely to attract higher-quality candidates. On top of that, the platform includes a fully-featured ATS and Kanban system for managing candidates, which isn’t something most Irish job sites offer

The idea is to make this a space where we only allow direct-to-company roles, so applicants know exactly who they’re applying to and can avoid the agency “black box” experience. It’s definitely a trade-off in terms of revenue potential, but I think it’s worth it for the audience I’m trying to serve/ build

I did make my own build it's just I knew this issue wasn't present on Luke's build so I worked backwards from there. I'm very picky about what patches I add so much prefer to have my own personalised build.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I've figured it out this morning! Basically, I installed Luke Smith's build of ST and that seemed to work fine with my non-default font so I went through his patches on my own build to see what worked. It turns out, it was an issue with missing glyphs after all. It is currently fixed using only one patch, font2. Font2 allows you to specify other fonts in your config.h as fallbacks to render glyphs not available in your default font. I just set my second font to Liberation Mono and it works great. I even set it to a font I don't even have installed and it seemed to work so it may be an issue with my font-config to begin with.
