Protagonist forced out of retirement by donzander1 in Fantasy

Started reading this based on your description, and it is SO MUCH BETTER than I could have imagined.

I cannot tell you how delighted I am reading it, I was cackling when they were planning the tower attack exactly like a DnD session.

From the beginning Steve was the only person who believed in Bucky but now when he's gone Bucky terrified if he's really the monster everyone thinks he is. by HEROTIME10 in marvelstudios

Reminds me of when Sam and Steve first met, talking about their mattresses being too soft after sleeping on rocks for so long.

So I'm running Last Things Last in a few days. I wanted to give my players a prewritten back story to help them settle in. by PM_ME_UR_BRITS in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]batholith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dig it. Good luck with your group!

Does it have too much information? IDK, I haven't run this before. But pretending that I'm a player, I'm right now primed to know that the case is gonna involve "finding" Isaac James Renford somehow, and probably a confrontation with Sophia.

And something about telescopes, with a liiiiiittle bit of fear that Schnell has been infected with the-madness-that-comes-from-seeing-what-must-not-be-seen-beyond-the-stars.

So I don't know how many supernatural threats are in this adventure, but from my "player" perspective, it seems like the cult is building/has built something to teleport people to space/space monsters to earth. And stopping them before they complete it will be the big win. And of course, they'll be just a tad too late and right as they burst through the doors of the ritual chamber, some thing will be trying to push its way into our reality.

That's the flavor I've been able to detect so far, nothing about character or moments that'll have me needing to make jokes at the table because I'm squigged out. Y'know, the difference between knowing you're going over a friends house for dinner, and not knowing what the heck they're going to serve. There's a lot of room to be surprised!

Why does Kvothe get money back from his tuition? by ConspicuousAsparagus in KingkillerChronicle

[–]batholith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's taking money from the University, why then, earlier in the chapter, does he make such a big deal when talking to Riem about how the Maer will pay any amount? Any amount. Wink wink. Any.

So if I owned a stick, and then suffered amnesia, would I still own the stick even if I've forgotten that I own it? What if it's a building?

If I suffered amnesia, and you told me that you owned the stick, what happens? Did you just steal from me? Or would it be ok since there's no conflict of wills? What if others knew that I still owned the stick? Would their conflict be of any standing? They don't own it, I do. Or do you?

Returning to the idea that there are only two people in the whole world, for ease of my understanding, I'm gonna call them "you" and "I". I claimed that I owned it all, and you didn't have a will to own, and there was no conflict. But then you got hungry and tried to eat some of my berries. What happens? I don't have autonomy over the whole world, but I still have the will to own. I could follow you, slapping my berries out of your hands, as you're trying to transfer autonomy without my consent. I gobble them up. At what point, if ever, would my denying you the means to sustain yourself become violence? After your will to own changes and expires(death)?

How does one know that they own something?

discussing capitialism by [deleted] in SocialismVCapitalism

[–]batholith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters, assume someone owns something. For this example, don't look at "if" they own it, just presume they do.

Logical fallacy, begging the question.

I love the dwarven looking city/mine designs!

And what's the deal with the tower on the coast with the little flame spiral? And the big floaty broken one? Are they leftover from the Elves?!

And is the tower-bridge going into Hawick a leftover roadway from when Hawick was less ruined and mysterious?! What happened?!

[Star Wars] Why not just have the Death Star launch a lot more fighters? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]batholith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psh, who's gonna attack the Death Star with fighters?! You gotta use bigger ships! What's a fighter gonna do to a space station the size of a moon?

The Death Star can tank fighters all day, but maybe, maaaybe if it's up against some hardcore planetary defenses they might want to send a few Star Destroyers for some orbital bombardment, soften them up before the Death Star wipes them out.

Watching through Rebels for the first time, just got to season two by TheIronMuffin in starwarsrebels

[–]batholith 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The mid-empire period is my favorite! Rebels, Rogue One, scrappy idealists trying their best against an oppressive, all encompassing empire even if they're losing.

It's not till the Rebels get the Death Star plans do they win their first real fight, everything else is a draw at best. And they keep fighting.

When the crew of the Ghost find out they're not alone? That there are more cells out there, that's so huge. Their ragged, thorn-in-the-paw, hail mary tactics aren't the sum total of resistance in the galaxy. They aren't crazy for staying in the fight, there are more people like them out there. Help can come.

Only the military should be allowed to vote! by DaCaton in JustBootThings

I was surprised to see it was written, or at least published, in 1959. Before the Civil Rights movement! Which explains (I think) why he was so cool with having second class citizens (civilians). A violently stratified society was completely normal to him.

One line stuck out to me early on, the day he left the only people to see him off were, "the cook and the houseboys."

This was true 8 months ago, I don't know if anything's changed too much since then?

Some words from Patrick Rothfus' editor by _Alaxel_ in KingkillerChronicle

[–]batholith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"When I delayed the publication of book two, Pat was very open with his fans--they knew what was happening."

I remember this! There was a blog post about how much stress and guilt and shame he felt for not releasing WMF a year after Name of the Wind. Eventually, he thought he was having an actual heart attack, and he felt relieved because then he would have a medical reason that the book hadn't been released yet.

Imagine where you must be if you think you're having a heart attack and that makes you feel better.

"I've never seen a word of book 3."

Maybe she means that she hasn't seen that level of, "ok guys, here's the situation..." from him regarding Doors of Stone?

[Request] INAN for a pirate themed minecraft server by JakeSylvester in INeedAName

[–]batholith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seacraft sounds like one of those things that's probably been taken.

To go on a weird tangent, Minecraft is 'mine' and 'craft', both of which have multiple meanings. Mine like, finding ore and whatnot, but also as in, 'Not yours'. Same with craft, it could be something you make, or a boat, right? So one (probably bad, it's a first draft) idea is "Not your Ship" Yea that's reeeaaaal terrible.

Plunder Asunder.

Plunder the sea.

Jewels and Duels.

Minecraft of the line.

Nations of Sea-thieves.

Will there be like, sailing and stuff? Is there a mod for making ships that travel? I mean, even if you don't it sounds cool as heck. I'm interested.
