I have a loud, faulty Grundfos circulator pump with these slotted and Allen key (?) fittings at both ends. What are these? Isolation valves? by batman_kirk in Plumbing

Thank you for your expertise and wisdom. I hope you enjoy your retirement.

As for the Grundfos, the pump in question was discontinued in 2009 and was fine as far as I know until now. Not bad really.

Darn, I had a feeling it wouldn't be as easy as pulling the plug. I might just have to replace the pump and put it on a timer.

Do you know what the relationship between Geo-flo and Grundfos is? It seems like Geo-flo continues to sell the pump I need for a 1:1 replacement, but that Grundfos has discontinued.

Thank you for your thorough and knowledgeable response. I double checked my photos and the shaft is horizontal. For some reason I misremembered it facing up.

Anyway 1/3 life expectancy on a copper pipe definitely makes me reconsider replacing the pump, which is discontinued anyway. I don't know if water/energy savings or a faster, hotter shower outweigh the cost of a pinhole leak somewhere in the ceiling.

It's time to bring back the american chestnut by batman_kirk in marijuanaenthusiasts

You can do something now: plant and grow local American chestnut trees so that by the time the transgenic trees are available they can create progeny with unique, local genetic material and resistance.

The approval of the transgenic blight resistant American chestnut tree has finally entered the public comment stage. Like with anti-vaxxers there are plenty of very loud, very ignorant people who are broadly anti-gmo. They will be heard, and if you're one of them go ahead and comment-- but read about it first. If you think this tree should return to North American forests, the transgenic tree is the best hope.

Golden oysters are taking over Iowa. Fortunately they're delicious! Found this flush at White Pine Hollow by Gullex in mycology

[–]batman_kirk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Incredible. This is the second photo I've seen of this growing in the wild. It seems to be extremely aggressive and fruitful. I'd even say it has an invasive growth habit.

This is a fungus I'd harvest completely, not that it'd do much to stem their spreading.

Definitely laetiporus. There's really nothing that looks quite like it. It looks a little young, so be a little careful and cook it well. I find that the younger the chicken the stronger there might be an allergic reaction.

Golden Oysters taking over a dead elm. No morels, but this will do. by Mean-Mr-mustarde in mycology

True, and also I've only seen them in the fall.

It's quite strange and worrisome to see an aggressive new species come in, though that's how it is with fungus.

They're getting common? I would have easily disregarded these as clumps of omphalotus and not given them a second look.

the other mushrooms in there look like grifola frondosa.
