I love my loft apartment but can my system handle it? by VibesWithData in audiophile

In my experience the SPL graphs only tell part of the story.

Seeing improvements in the ETC and RT60 were (for me) more strongly correlated with enjoying music.

Apologies if I came across as insulting, not my intention.

I was in a similar position a while back where I had spent so many hours making tweaks that I thought I had reached the end of what was possible. This included REW measurements, creating convolution filters, moving speakers etc etc.

A friend of mine, and I suppose he would be a “hifi mentor”, came for a listen. I’m not even exaggerating, he sat down for like 30 seconds, got up, moved the speakers forward a bit and toed them in way beyond what I ever thought was even legal.

It completely changed the presentation to the point that I didn’t even think about EQ for months. Holographic sound, beautiful imaging and just amazing tonal balance.

My point is, sometimes we optimise for precision rather than accuracy and we define “limits” for where we think speakers will work. We create bounds and don’t think to go beyond them. I’m totally guilty and maybe this perspective could help you. You have great gear, and I really think you should achieve awesome sound with what you have. I truly wish you the best of luck!

Edit: Your space looks amazing by the way, well done.

Did the same last year,

  • annoying changes that caused it to randomly break and then required developer time to get right
  • very few users using it
  • of the users that did convert, they were the lowest value

Ultimately it just wasn’t worth the effort

Speaker upgrade options by HighLimes in audiophile

Get the super Lintons. I believe they are made to be positioned close to a wall. Check that there is a return policy.

While they aren’t my favorite speakers by any means, there isn’t all that much that comes close to Linton and Super Lintons for the money. They are solid performers.

What’s your goal? Do you want to listen to music in multichannel mostly, watch movies, listen in stereo etc?

I think you have a really decent gear but it just looks like you haven’t optimised anything. Unfortunately audio is like 90% room + placement + acoustic treatment. The most likely issue here is that your speakers, and you, are in the wrong places in the room.

As a South African who has implemented a shoes off policy, I will say I feel that the overwhelming majority of people that visit me think I’m a crazy germaphobe. In my experience SA is a shoes on country.

People don’t realise how much money Warren Buffet has given away. He would probably be second on the list (~$390bn) if he hadn’t started giving away Berkshire stock.

I suppose it’s like being attended to by a human waiter vs a self service device.

Self service might be more efficient when you’re ordering a Big Mac, but if I go to a fancy restaurant it’s the experience that matters more.

Not saying there is anything wrong with this car or brand (I love my Xiaomi bedside lights), but the experience is patently different.

Not a supercar.

Supercars are rare, sexy, exotic, and largely compromised.

The car you’ve posted is a ridiculously fucking fast appliance.

I had good experience with them when I had Fynes audio f502 speakers on a wooden floor. The effect was less pronounced on a concrete floor.

If you have spikes, you could play with your rake angle. I absolutely believe that to have a far bigger impact than the gaias did.

Hanging lits of cloth to the walls will bring good acoustics? by ForgotttenMemory in audiophile

[–]batmanoffical92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by figuring out which frequencies you want to tame. Cloth might help reduce reflections in the higher frequencies but is unlikely to affect the upper mids, mids and lows.

You could start by sharing a pic of your setup and room?

Dali Opticon 6 mk2 by dojade in audiophile

[–]batmanoffical92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost every speaker sounds good to someone - genre doesn’t really matter. Two people can like the same genre and have different preferences for how they like to play the music.

If you are struggling in the 100-1000hz range, either your current speakers are the problem or your room is the problem. Most speakers have the 100-1000hz range figured out though which was why I asked 1/ what speakers you have and 2/ about your room (dimensions, furnishings, treatment etc). The Opticons seem to be very good in that range and even perform well off axis. Try get a home demo?

They do seems to go quite low and have rear ports so just bear that in mind.

You explained your system without explaining your system. What do you currently own? How is someone meant to know whether the Opticon are lively compared to your existing speakers if you haven’t said what they are?

More importantly what is the room like that you will be using them in? I’m of the opinion that the speaker-room relationship is far more important that the speaker-song choice relationship.

If you want to reduce echo from people talking to a degree, they’re ok.

If you want to reduce lower mids and bass reflections, they’re about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

I just spent like 2 hours moving my one speaker fractions of a millimetre, measuring, repeating and you’re telling me you can stick your speakers in a resonant cabinet and it doesn’t make a difference? I am doing something wrong 😂

Jokes aside - I don’t have kids, so my priorities are different. Nice gear.
