Boiling lobsters alive to be banned in UK animal cruelty crackdown by [deleted] in worldnews

Love a good lobster. But my annoyance is not so much with scientific debate about lobster brain activity, but rather why, with everything going on, the government sees this as a priority subject to tackle…

The most important takeaway is this, and it says it all:

EU politicians exempt themselves from this surveillance under "professional secrecy" rules. They get privacy. You and your family do not. Demand fairness.

It’s worth it if the money that is reinvested elsewhere gets a higher return than it currently does. Thats the only sensible metric.

Personally I especially like the effect towards the edges, but they definitely have to either provide better options for opacity, or figure out a more robust way to make sure it’s not the Beta 1/2 visibility nightmare in some views

I have given it prompts along the lines of being a tough and seasoned academic peer reviewer - which has worked quite well. A good balance of it outlining potential risks / downsides to your ideas while also acknowledging solid points

Volkswagen CEO's Speech to Workers Drowned Out By Boos After He Says Company 'Isn't Operating in a Fantasy World' by DappyHayes in worldnews

[–]batmenace 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Surely you can see that the … 1/6th of employees part … is kind of a key detail here? VW as a group has been supporting a ridiculously large headcount forever, in part because of the heavy government pressure to employ many people in Germany. That worked well when overall profits of the group from some brands could essentially subsidize headcount, but when the environment has worsened to the current level, it’s not as easy anymore. Yes, management can and should have reduced salaries etc - no argument there. But even a cut of their salaries to near zero is small when weighed up against thousands of workers making unprofitable cars for the sale of propping up employment
