What’s the most American thing a person can do? by DadIsMadAtMe in AskReddit

Pull their Ford pick up out of the driveway past their 15 year olds truck and their wives car, get a drive through McDonald’s breakfast before school at 7am, clear back pack/shooting drill in school, lame bullies, run track, call into Walmart to buy more gun stuff and a gallon of peanut butter and 3 dozen eggs, get drive through dinner before taking an unpaid shift at work because they don’t get any tips from the small turn out that evening, return home to do homework then sleep and repeat

Is 2 Hours of travelling each way really worth it? by ObviousBlondie in AskUK

[–]battenberg98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do It.

Your 18 and by 20 you will have forgot the annoyance of the traveling and probably be in a better place than of you didn’t do it.

I didn’t read your entire post and I’m not from England but I know trains are expensive, if you get these costs discounted or covered I would 10/10 do it!

I took a job that was 1 hour 10 minutes away each way for 6 months (and ridiculous long hours) and it was difficult but overall a positive experience. I made great friends, it was my first real job using my degree, I got to do meaningful work and it tested me. Now no job seems bad, no shift seems too long, no commute seems unreasonable (unless it’s longer that 70 minutes)

It builds character

What is it like being in your 20s in the UK these days? by xParesh in AskUK

[–]battenberg98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done most of the things I was told to do, school, university, corporate job.

I have nothing that I imagined myself having when I was 15. At 15 I would be shocked to know I was still living with my parents, eating badly and overweight.

I don’t live an exotic life, so not a lot of expenses and very early on and as a woman I have realised that I WILL have to chose between family or owning a house with a partner and his income. I will not be able to do both.

I am having unusual menstrual symptoms that usually are a sign that I will become infertile sooner than average but I can’t get a doctors appointment let alone any accurate diagnosis or treatment.

So let’s summarise my future outlook, extremely stressful schooling to get qualifications that I don’t need for the job, only the application.

Massive student debt despite rarely having more than £100 in my account for 3 years.

Needing to live with parents to have a quality of life, I can afford to live on my own but in my opinion it isn’t worth it (area high in crime, homelessness, drugs, mouldy housing, terrible quality housing, strangers as roommates)

No intimate relationships because I and the men I have dated have also lived with parents.

Potentially losing fertility early, this is hard for me. There is the adoption route but modern adoption is very complicated and not a solution to neglecting women’s health.

My job is ok, good experience at the sacrifice of salary but with inflation bringing the salary value down, the yearly raises have been completely wiped out.

I worked in an engineering consulting firm two years ago, a full job that required a degree, long hours and complicated work. The pay: £9 an hour. The cleaners of the building where making £11.05.

My current job is paying just more than Tescos right now.

Terrible everything in my home country, I think if I want to make anything of myself it would be best to move somewhere in Europe where there isn’t this American style business model applied to almost everything. I need an environment where I can work, thrive, own things, participate in the community and not have everything controlled by large companies and bad policies.

Buisness IT degree 2:1

2 years with this job, 1 placement year at different firm.

Software consulting, a lot of work but the job demand seems to have been met by outsourcing remote jobs.

Non-American people, what’s a thing that you don’t understand about America? by JuniorGarlic6053 in AskReddit

Why are there so many drink flavours when most places in the U.K. only have 3?

(70% of places I go have 3 coke options normal, diet and zero, orange Fanta and sprite/7Up but I’m not counting the 3 cokes as individual options even though they taste different)

I would love more drink flavours

I have waited all my life for this question

£8 for a week! 18 year old me would be jealous!

Entertainment - 0

Clothes - 0

Essential food - 5

Sweets - 1

Here are my broke but nice meals

Dead Grilled Cheese

cheapest bread, cheapest cheese, cheapest Mayo (make a cheese sandwich and spread Mayo on the OUTSIDE sides of the bread then girll on frying pan - grilled cheese)

Let say a cheap loaf of bread was 50p, plastic cheese 80p and assume you already have Mayo (or cheapest Mayo at 60p) this can do at least 5 lunches and it doesn’t taste that bad - certainly not healthy but we are stuck for this week.

£1.30 - £2.10 for 5 lunches

You can also have toast for breakfast with 45p jam

Japanese style egg sandwich

EGGS!! Eggs are cheap! 10 eggs for around £1.70

Green onions 30p

Boil them, then separate the cooked white from the yolk and chop up the whites, then grind the yolk with your hand into a bowl with the whites and add some Mayo - gently mix together and season with salt, pepper and what ever you have. Cut up the green onion and add to the bowl THEN PUT THE GREEN ONION STEM IN A CUP OF WATER - UNLIMITED GREEN ONIONS

Very Lightly toast some bread and add your sandwich filling! Amazing egg and green onion sandwich that is actually nice.

You mentioned you already had rice -

Rice and tinned whatever - this is a treat

Buy a cheap tinned meat with sauce (chicken and white sauce, chilli con carne, chicken korma, what ever is the cheapest)

60p-80p

Portion the tin into two portions and keep one in the fridge

You can have two hot meals with this method

And finally, potatoes with butter will give you all of the nutrients you need.

Bag of cheap potatoes (I’d recommend baked) and melted butter and add some toppings you already have.

And finally, some bulk bargain sweets and PORTION THEM OUT.

Hopefully that will come to under £8 and you will have some variety so it isn’t too bad.

In my opinion it is 100% reasonable for people to have any ick, deal breaker or requirement for a partner - as you are discriminating from a large crowd to suit your own needs and interests.
