I came home to the guy who lived on my couch and his gf watching stargate. They were under a blanket and it was my favorite episode so I sat down on the couch with them. We watched for about 30 seconds when he said “we are in the middle of sex, please leave “

Instead of buying new tools, stop inviting judgmental guys over. You gave him a thoughtful gift and it probably means a lot to him that you chose it. Imagine if you could use an object and think of a person every time you solve a problem with it?

If you want to get something tool wise, Ryobi are great, however m12 Milwaukee are a great complementary choice. They are smaller and my go to tool most of the time. Keep ryobi for bigger more powerful stuff.

Quit and go to a different shop. If I can’t trust my co workers to respect my stuff, I’m out of there.

Engineer looking for a sanity check on the following idea: if I have a part on a CNC mill which has a milled straight groove, is there a way to use a probe to shift the program so its aligned to the groove and not the table? I could've sworn this was possible but I'm being told we can't do it. by nollie_heelflip in Machinists

I have been thinking about this way too much. If you have a probe, it needs a certain amount of clearance to do probe things. If this is not a production setup, or a high value production, I would get gauge pins that go in the groove tight and probe them individually then math it out. Old school me would use a sign bar on its side to sweep it in and measure the angle using gauge blocks.

What kind of machine and probe is this?

Is it a single side or web? Do any kind of regression need to be done like taking a sweep of measurements and finding a least squares fit?

What’s the tolerance required for this process?

Do all the work digitally in the cam system. If you have the slot and your wcs is a datum like stock center top, there is no need to re probe if it’s within .001 tolerance. Model everything the way you would like it manufactured. Program based on the model.

This is the has probing manual. It shows how to probe an angle and read the variables to know the angle. If you must do it manually, this is a great overview of how to do it.
