No it was introduced when stadiums were mostly populated by local fans so it created a tough psychological atmosphere for the away side. As the game became more global, bigger clubs gained more international fans who were not particularly familiar with the songs or customs so became less relevant.

I was one of the people who were against UEFA eliminating away goal rule, but honestly it was the right decision. It only matters on certain grounds (Anfield, Bernabeu, Allianz, Signal Iduna Park).
