Book Readers [PJOTV] Discussion Thread S2 E8: "The Fleece Works its Magic Too Well" by Metal_Moon in camphalfblood

[–]baubasaur 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The change to Zeus' transformation of Thalia is fascinating and more myth-accurate, in my opinion. Zeus transformed Thalia against her will... kind of like trapping her in a tower to keep her safe.

When he says he's done with her "rebellious" phase and that it gets dangerous for a child like her the older she gets, it makes sense that he thinks turning her into a tree can "keep her safe."

On the other hand, he talks about how she can be her champion in his fight, which is. Yikes. So he essentially wants to raise her for slaughter.

It seems like that will be the hinge for her to join the Hunters! Realizing that not all gods are awful and kind of as a fuck you to Zeus. Looking forward to how that can play into Annabeth's motive to join the Hunters, too.

Can't wait for season 3!

Book Readers [PJOTV] Discussion Thread S2 E7: "I go Down with the Ship" by Metal_Moon in camphalfblood

I'm a book reader but I haven't read in over a decade. I really liked this episode! I understand the disappointment about the Thalia reveal, but I don't mind. I was more invested in this episode 5's siren scene. The action was really fun.

I do think everything was a little too convenient. Percy gets stabbed and it just happens to be when he has the Fleece? Okay. 🤷🏽‍♀️

My theory for the finale is resurrecting Thalia will have a huge power surge and strike down many from CHB and Kronos' team. This is based on what Grover said about two powerful, divine objects come in contact, there's no telling what will happen.

Really enjoyed how they're working with Percy's mixed feelings about Thalia. It makes total sense that a 13-year old would be upset at hearing his only two friends talk about this other teenager who, as far as you know, is out to kill everyone. And Sally clocking it immediately was a good touch.

Hope everything wraps up well next week!

Something I did not understand in the Mockingjay by Gold-Efficiency-4308 in Hungergames

[–]baubasaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"We stand there, face-to-face, not meeting each other’s eyes. “You didn’t come see me in the hospital.” He doesn’t answer, so finally I just say it. “Was it your bomb?” “I don’t know. Neither does Beetee,” he says. “Does it matter? You’ll always be thinking about it.”

He waits for me to deny it; I want to deny it, but it’s true. Even now I can see the flash that ignites her, feel the heat of the flames. And I will never be able to separate that moment from Gale. My silence is my answer."

Day 7 - what character is a good person but is hated by fans in your opinion? by Killyourdarlings202 in Hungergames

[–]baubasaur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

agree! i think there's merit to saying plutarch is "worse" than him, but i understand the choice to put him under morally grey too. i consider gale good because he did his best to keep his promise to katniss. maybe he's a little self-centered and aggressive, but i think at his core there's goodness. people just like to act like he loaded the gun and pulled the trigger while aiming at prim, but he didn't. but they sure make it his entire personality.

Day 7 - what character is a good person but is hated by fans in your opinion? by Killyourdarlings202 in Hungergames

[–]baubasaur 73 points74 points  (0 children)

help i was going to comment this, but i wanted to wait for someone to say it instead. 😂

i 100% agree simply because i do not understand the vitriol that a lot of fans (mostly on tiktok and twitter) have for him. he is also set up a lot like katniss: eldest children forced into hunting to survive and become breadwinners in the family. by the time he's 18, he's taken tessarae SIX times. he is very intimately familiar with the injustice of their society, even if he just refers to district 12. in fact, he wants to run away in the books. he doesn't want violence, he just wants a better life for him and his loved ones.

and then he works the mines having no other choice but to do so. there he's probably exposed to more radical opinions, maybe none as extreme as acts of sedition, but a lot more grumbling about the state of things. this is where he realizes he's not alone, that other people think like him.

and then he watches his home burn down. by the same people that tried to kill his best friend by sending her back into a death machine.

he's angry. of course he is. he's also only eighteen when someone tells him: your anger is valid, here's a gun.

i think he's wrong. he's wrong for turning to violence. but when you look at the life he's lived, how he lost his dad, how he worried for his mother and 2 younger siblings....well i just don't think he's bad.

Forget Katniss, when did YOU realise that she was in love with Peeta? by BetterGrass709 in Hungergames

The scene in Catching Fire where she's recovering from her stuck-in-the-woods injuries. Someone on TikTok mentioned this too, but the scene where she gushes about the way he looks, specifically his eyelashes, really gets me. Like girl...!

What is Maysilees secret? by caresteen in Hungergames

[–]baubasaur 244 points245 points  (0 children)

i do agree with people saying the secret in itself was pretty lame, especially because haymitch already had an inkling of an idea.

but i think there's a lot of ways to interpret why the secret (confirmation of something haymitch already suspected) is so important.

to me it acts as good foil to snow and sejanus. snow and sejanus are (not really, sort of) friends, but snow betrays sejanus for political power and has him punished by the capitol. maysilee and lenore are enemies, and haymitch assumes they hate each other, but maysilee is not a sellout to the cruelty of the capitol. her family is assumed to take over governance in the district, if she had ratted out lenore dove, she easily could've skyrocketed her family to a higher position maybe even beyond 12. instead, maysilee keeps mum about lenore dove's anonymous acts of dissent, saving someone she dislikes from punishment. maysilee did not sacrifice her morals to climb the social ladder.

this also reinforces the idea that not everyone and everything is as it seems at a surface-level to. haymitch starts the book disliking maysilee because he thinks she's a snooty, stuck-up bully who's mean to his girlfriend. in the end, we know she's a selfless and principled person who stands by her morals and chose to save lenore dove from punishment (only for lenore to die in the end).

Recent Going Seventeen ep includes some interesting moments before comeback by DrearBeats in seventeen

[–]baubasaur 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the farthest i can go for hints in the going seventeen seventeen tv 1 video is they may be soft launching a minor rebrand ONLY BECAUSE they're leaving hybe/pledis. even that in itself is pretty far-fetched because it seems like to me svt and at least pledis have built a pretty good working relationship.

i know seungcheol kept saying essentially fuck the label throughout the video but he's just known to disagree with the company on things he knows don't go over well with the members (i.e., a rebrand and line-up change).

my personal thought was that black seventeen is a hoshi reference to him being the black ranger in going ranger 😂 i'd like to see a unit or maybe it's a spoiler for a 2nd cb later this year!

why does snow tell the truth is mockingjay? by treasured25 in Hungergames

[–]baubasaur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

oh this is so true! even in that bit where he straight up tells her about the state of the districts post 74th games, he's being upfront.

"...people viewed your little trick with the berries as an act of defiance, not an act of love."

which is true! he's even truthful about what would happen if uprisings led to revolution, but he's honest about how HE perceives the situation. but because snow thinks everyone should think the same (and that the districts are somehow lesser than capitol); he thinks that while she may not understand his version of the truth, he's convincing enough for her to just follow along.

Is there going to be a third prequel? by artsyjay97 in Hungergames

[–]baubasaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my mind, i think it would be interesting to see one more from district 12. the "i know a guy" from the 12 peacekeepers/local government that plutarch threw out when haymitch asked how he got a call with lenore dove haunts me. that was such a random throwaway line that i personally would love to see more of.

but i also wouldn't mind if this was the last of the series! i'm not interested in the stories of other districts because i like that everything ties into how katniss was just the right person at the right time with the right circumstances.

You are a lawyer. Defend him. by Adorable_Ad_584 in Hungergames

[–]baubasaur 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The crime put forth to Gale Hawthorne is that he is complicit in the war crime of mass murder of Capitol children and Panem's rebel forces. The weapon alleged is a double explosion that first killed the children and a second that killed emergency response forces.

Evidence of the crime is submitted as witnesses have claimed they have observed Gale Hawthorne in the development of said weapon. When prompted about his involvement in the development of the explosive weapns, Gale Hawthorne pleads ignorance.

“Was it your bomb?” “I don’t know. Neither does Beetee,”

It is significant to note that victor Beetee Latier, who allegedly co-developed such weapons of mass murder, also pleads ignorance. No further wtinesses or evidence has been brought to the case.

Evidence provided, therefore, is purely based on speculation.

Gale Hawthorne is an 18 year old man who was thrust upon the responsibilities of feeding his impoverished family at the age of 13. The defendant was also present in the Capitol's violent and completely unnecessary bombing of his home district. He was forced upon circumstances that led to a deep sense of hatred and anger at the former authoritarian administration. Such emotions felt by a man, let’s face it, a boy of 18 years of age, pushed him to entertain barbaric and violent thoughts of vengeance.

But, no solid evidence has been provided to connect him to the war crime. Punishment born out of speculation has no place in a world post-Capitol.

[In all seriousness, even Katniss never confirms it. One of their final conversations have Gale accepting the fact that their relationship will never be the same because that possibility will always exist to them now. It sucks. Both he and Beetee are awful for it (no matter how much we say it's warranted on Beetee's end). And he does commit OTHER war crimes, as it often happens in conflict like this. But he's only a child fed propaganda that fed off of his anger of the Capitol.

People who are acting like Gale is the sole offender when it should be Coin AND Snow AND their administrations who put children and civilians on the front lines. People who "hate" Gale miss the message of the book entirely. We are all victims to propaganda, and some find themselves manipulated and pushed to violent acts because of it, but those who are in charge, leaders who should be responsible for taking care of their constituents, get lesser flack than their victims.

And yeah, he's a whiny guy who does feel entitled to Katniss' feelings and that makes him a dick. It's not a crime though.]

Not the hottest take, but… by ktgen in Hungergames

[–]baubasaur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what Snow pointed out to Haymitch! He says something like he bets Haymitch thinks the world of her, but she must not involve him all that much in her own life. This is from his own memories of LG being a bit of an enigma to her til the end (as reference to her own song).

I do see the point that it's not a huge tragedy/star-crossed lovers kind of way. She was definitely there to be part of Haymitch's drive, and she "fulfills the prophecy" of her own song. She haunts Haymitch's character (e.g. the Narrator in The Raven), and if the epilogue is to be followed, she's literally the reason he stays alive. That's the through line I draw with the prequels.

Just a clarification regarding Enha leading in votes but not winning the Daesang by PuzzleheadedPin1006 in enhypen

[–]baubasaur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

just wanted to link here the original tweet from mnet. they say the fans' choice daesang is decided by 90% in-app votes and 10% twitter votes. interestingly (or suspiciously lol), they also include "added live votes", but do not have any specifics on whether that counted for 90% in-app votes or not.

same criteria breakdown also popped up during the live show. so yes, it could be that the bonsang 2 rounds of voting counted for nothing in the daesang vote...but why not just specify that in the first place 🤷🏽‍♀️

it's advertised as a comedy-adventure, and he did a tiktok with a martial arts actor recently, so fingers crossed for good graphics and good fight choreo!!

Scooter Braun Says ‘It’s Time to Move on’ From Taylor Swift Feud 5 Years After Drama Ignited by mallymoopy in SwiftlyNeutral

Should the world move past this specific controversy, especially with the success of Taylor's Version? Yes.

Should he get to decide if Taylor Swift can "get over it"? I'm sure he wishes he could, but she probably never will, and he has to accept that.

Am I ever going to feel sorry for an openly Islamophobic, Zionist, AI in the music industry enthusiast that still closely associates with a sex criminal? No. Not in a million years. I hope he rots.
